What does it mean to be poor in Rev 17:3
As I study the word poor I first discover that according to the scriptures, to be poor is a blessed condition for the people of God. Please note Psalms 34:6, Psalms 70:5, Zephaniah 3:12 and James 2:5. These passages do not harmonize with the idea of God spitting us (poor) out of his mouth. So as I mediate on this condition of being poor as described in Revelation 3:17 I understand that the verse is describing these offenders as “saying”, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing. These people are not poor in the common vernacular as in lacking of comfortable subsistence or money nor does it mean destitute of value, worth or importance. The text is telling us that because of their abundance they are blinded to their true condition and the scriptures call this condition poor. So what are they poor of? I suggest to you that the following text gives us a clear understanding.
And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish. Deut 8:17-19
Poor by inference to the before quoted scripture can mean “forget the Lord thy God” and depend on ones own self.
Jeremiah 17:5 reads
Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.
This essentially is a lack of faith. When our trust departs from God and we trust in ourselves we become poor in faith.
