Hello, friends. Welcome to the Seed Pod for kids. Thank you for joining me today as we spend time with our friend Jesus. Spending time with Jesus is the best way to start your day. Let's begin our time together praising him. The story of how this hymn came to be is very unique. Anthony's Showalter was a professor one day he received two letters in the mail from previous students. Each man wrote to him telling him that his wife had died. So these two previous students had both lost their wives to death and get this. Both women had died on the same day. Well, professor show Walter felt very badly and he wanted to write some words of comfort. He looked in the Old Testament where Moses was speaking to the children of Israel. In Deuteronomy chapter 33, verse 27, here's what it says, the eternal God is thy refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms. Then as he got to thinking, he realized that there would be others who might enjoy these words of encouragement. So he wrote the words and the music for the chorus to this song. He then sent it to Elisha Hoffman. He was a well-known hyn writer who wrote the words to the three verses and sent it back to Professor Showalter, and then Showalter wrote the music. That's how we get the song Leaning on the Everlasting Arms, Save and Secure from all ours. Mazdas, I have lost save. This week, we are going to focus on some Bible verses that help us and encourage us when we're worried. Have you ever been worried? Do you know what it means to be worried? It's another word for afraid. You're not quite sure what's gonna happen. You're nervous, you're worried, oh no, what is this kind of like fearful? Those are some other words that you could use in place of worried, and God has so many promises. In fact, it was hard for me just to pick six for this week. But God has so many promises for us to help us and encourage us to not be worried. So we are going to look at one Peter chapter five, verse seven. Today. This is the Bible verse. We're gonna be focused on verse Peter, chapter five, verse seven. That's in the New Testament, kind of towards the back of the Bible. It's right before Revelation. You have first and second, Peter, first and second, third, John, Jude, revelation. So it's at the back of the Bible. Now, I want you to get your prayer journal that we've been working on, even if it's just some papers that are stapled together to make a little booklet, or if you were able to go to the store and actually purchase a notebook or a blank sketchpad or something that you can write in. I want us to write down first Peter chapter five, verse seven, and moms and dads, if you wanna follow along with our outline, we have it on our website starting with jesus.com. And you can go at an under the resource tabs to Katie's corner, and that's where you can find a PDF download so you can follow right along if you want, you can print it out. Kids can copy the Bible verses from it. It's a great handy tool that you can use in your family for family worships or just to keep these verses in front of you so that throughout the week you're talking about them and thinking about them. First Peter, chapter five or seven, here's what it says. Casting all your care upon him for he cares for you. Have you ever been very concerned or very, or you care about an animal, maybe, maybe your puppy or a cat that you have, and you're very concerned because maybe it got sick? Well, God wants us to cast our cares upon him so we could say, oh, Lord, you know that my puppy is sick. I want you to be with him and help him give the the veterinarian the ability to know what's going on. That type of thing you can. God wants us to cast our cares on him. The things that we're worried about, he wants us to give them to him. So let's think about this Bible verse casting all your care upon him, and let's use it in a prayer. We're gonna learn to use this verse in a prayer. So if I were praying, and let's say I'm worried about my health. Let's say that I'm getting sick and I'm worried that it might be a sickness that could cause me to go to the hospital, or something along those lines, I might say something like this, dear Lord, you have said that we are to cast all of our cares upon you, for you care for us. Lord, I am claiming that promise. I am choosing to believe that you care for me, Lord, you know that I'm worried about the way that I'm feeling, how I'm feeling a little sick. I pray that you will help me to be able to get the care and the help that I need to be able to become healthy again, to be able to serve you and work for you. Please, Lord, give me wisdom. Give the doctor's wisdom, give people that I talk to about this situation, wisdom and help me to be able to heal completely in Jesus' name. Amen. Now, I'm not really sick. I do wanna say that right up. I'm not sick. I was just showing you an example of what I would do to use this Bible verse to pray. So I just want you to know I'm feeling just fine. But that was just an example to show you kind of what it would look like to use that Bible verse in a prayer. Now, boys and girls, I want you to remember to pray for your five people. We have them written down right in your Bible journal, and so I want you to pray for them. If you don't know how to write yet, that's okay. You can draw pictures that symbolize different things, maybe a smiley face to show happiness or things like that. You can even draw out a sketch of what the people look like, so you know to pray for them. But I want to encourage you to keep praying for these five people every day. Set aside time to pray for them. Write down next to their names, some things that you wanna pray for specifically to help them, to encourage them. All right, let's study our Bible lesson now. Hey, boys and girls, it's a new week, isn't it? Well, our week today, we are studying about God preparing a deliverer. Remember how the children of Israel had gone to Egypt or Joseph was like second in command and they lived there and he helped to take care of them. Well, many, many years have gone by. Generations have lived there and died, and now they are in some trouble. But we're gonna find out more about that in just a few minutes. First of all, let's bow our heads and pray. Lord, I thank you so much for your love, for your care, that we get to spend this time with you and with each other. Please come into our hearts and help us to stay connected to you today. In Jesus' name, amen. Have you ever lived near your grandparents or your great-grandparents? It's very special for those families who are able to live near their relatives, especially when you have multiple generations. That's a generation is like a father and a child, a grandfather to a father, to a child. Those are generations. So it's very special to be able to live near multiple generations. The grandparents or great-grandparents get to watch their children, their grandchildren, their great-grandchildren grow up. They get to see them accomplish different things in school or maybe in sports or in music. They get to really enjoy being there and helping out, and it just gives the older generation something to live for, something to be excited about. Well, it had been a long time since Jacob and Joseph had died. The families of Jacob's sons were still living in Egypt. They were still there after several years. There were many more of them than the number who went there with Jacob. The Bible calls them Hebrews or the children of Israel. Do you know why it's called the Children of Israel? Well, it's because Israel was the new name that God gave to Jacob. Remember when Jacob wrestled with the angel and he said, I will not let you go unless you bless me. Well, God gave Jacob a new name, and it was called Israel. So now the his children or grandchildren and great-grandchildren and all of his offspring are now called the Children of Israel. God had made a promise to make a great nation from Jacob's family, but he had said that Haan was to be their home, not Egypt. Well, when would they go back? When would they go to Canaan? Was it time yet? A few years ago, we were living in Michigan, and we had just moved to a new church district. My husband was a pastor there, and we decided to go on vacation. And so we went on vacation out to a place where I used to live as a child. It's called Monument Valley, Utah, and it's on the Navajo Reservation, the Navajo Nation. Well, we went out there and I loved it. I was like, oh, this is like coming home. There were people that I knew, and it was an area that I was familiar with, and I had really enjoyed living there as a child, and I really wished that I could have my boys live there. But I knew that it wasn't time yet. It wasn't the right time, and so I was praying about it. I was like, Lord, I'd really like to move out there. Well, several years went by and then all of a sudden we got a call to come out here to the Navajo Nation. Now, we don't live in Monument Valley where I used to live as a child, but we only live a couple hours away, and it is such a wonderful experience that my boys can now live out here on the Navajo Nation. It was really exciting to move out here, and I wanted to move out here for quite a while, but I had to wait for God's timing. And sometimes it's hard to wait, isn't it? Well, God had told that children of Israel that they would be going back to Egypt. He had promised that he would give them the land of Canaan, but they were waiting. They're like, when is it going to happen? Egyptians had a king and their king was called a Pharaoh. Now, the Pharaoh, who was so good to Joseph's family, he died and years went by, and this new Pharaoh didn't care that Joseph had saved the people of Egypt from starving. He was more worried about something else. Do you know what it was? Hmm. Well, he was worried that there were so many Israelites in Egypt because he was afraid that if some other nation were to come and have a war and start a war, would the Israelites be on Pharaoh side, or would they join up with the enemies and fight against them and being right in this country, they, ooh, that would give them an unfair advantage. That would not be good. But you know, those Israelites, they're very good workers. So Pharaoh didn't want the Israelites to leave. It's not like he was like, get outta here. Oh, what could he do? Well, one of his counselors suggested, Hey, why don't you make 'em slaves? And he thought, that's a good idea. And so that is what he did. Even women became slaves. Pharaoh was building many very large buildings. He forced the Israelites to make bricks for those buildings. Oh, how hard they had to work. So here's how they would do it. They would go down to the Nile River and they would get some of the mud from the river. Do you like to play in mud? It is so fun to play in mud. I remember one time when I was in Africa, there was this huge rainstorm, like a monsoon, and it turned everything to a sea of mud, and it was really warm. It was hot there. And so I decided that I wanted to go out and have a mud fight. And so first we just ran out and we're playing in the rain, and then we picked up handfuls of mud and we started throwing them at each other, and we ended up covered in mud. It was so much fun. Well, the Egyptians, they would go to the Nile River, they would gather mud from the Nile River and bring it back, and then they would chop up bits of straw or dried grass, that type of thing, and they would mix it together. Then after a few days, they would put that mixture into these like molds, and they, they would fill it up and make it really pad it, you know, kind of like a mud pie that you might make at home. They would fill it up, and then they would let it sit and dry in that hot sun. After a while, the bricks would be done, they would be dry, and then they would use those to build the magnificent buildings, and once they made those buildings and they would cover it with stone or pieces of tile or colorful stone pieces or glass or that type of thing, they would go and they can make mosaics, which is basically a big picture made up of little itty bitty tiny things, and so they, oh, they would just build these magnificent palaces and temples. The Israelites had to work really, really hard, but you know, even though those Hebrews were still slaves, their families, they kept growing. They had more and more children, and finally there were so many Israelites that Pharaoh decided he was going to make a terrible law. He told the Hebrew nurses who helped the mothers, when their babies were born, he told those nurses that they needed to kill all the Hebrew baby boys. Oh, no, that's terrible. But you know what the Bible tells us? It tells us that the nurses chose to obey God instead of Pharaoh. Now, that made Pharaoh angry. So what did he tell the Egyptians to do? Let's look at Exodus chapter one, verse 22. Exodus is the second book in the Bible, where're at the very beginning of the book of Exodus. Exodus chapter one. It's right after Genesis, Exodus chapter one, verse 22, Exodus chapter one, verse 22. Let's see what that says. But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive. Therefore, God dealt well with the midwives and the people multiplied and grew very mighty. Oh, they are throwing the baby boys into the river. Now, can babies swim? No, not usually. That sounds pretty bad, doesn't it? But you know what? Even though the king had a wicked plan, God's plans can always overrule man's plans. Hmm. We're gonna find out what happened when two special people had a baby boy in what they did to protect him, boys and girls. You know what's so encouraging to me is that even when kings or rulers or people in authority, even when they pass terrible laws, God can still overrule. He can still work in a mighty, mighty way. It's not too big for him. Nothing is too hard for him. I'm glad that God's in control, aren't you? Let's pray. Lord, thank you for being the king of the universe, for being in control and being in charge, and even when it, it looks like Satan is winning or the bad is winning, you can still bring about good. Thank you for your love and your care for each one of us. In Jesus' name, amen. Exodus chapter four, verse 12. It's our new memory verse. I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say.
