The Third Elijah

Oh wow, it is a blessing to be back in the area of Loma Linda.

I believe the last time I was here was back actually in October of last year.

So it's been quite a long time and it's really nice to be back to be able to see my family and friends and also to be able to speak here at Avid Hope.

And actually, you know, it's very interesting.

I'm a pastor at the College of the Korean Church in Tennessee, and it's about 5 minutes away from the campus so a lot of the students attend our church and what's interesting is a lot of them are pre-med pre-dent students so they eventually end up in Loma Linda after they graduate.

So when I go back home for break I always see a lot of familiar faces.

So I actually see some of them here as well this morning.

Are you ready to study the Word this morning?

Today's message is entitled Third Elijah and we're gonna be looking at a prophecy in the book of Malachi, and we're going to try to identify who this third Elijah that Malachi speaks about.

So we're going to go ahead and study the Word of God together, but before we open up the Word, let us bow our heads for a word of prayer.

Our Father which art in heaven, it is a blessing to be back home.

I thank you so much Lord that we are able to come here together to worship.

And Father I pray that as we take this opportunity to study the prophecy of the coming Elijah, the third Elijah, I pray that you would give us understanding.

I pray that your Holy Spirit would be the 1 to teach us through your word.

Father, I pray in a special way that you would hide me behind the cross of Calvary.

I pray that you please forgive me of all of my sin because Lord this morning I am merely a messenger for you.

And so I pray in a special way, Lord, that the message that is shared today would be simple and practical.

And Father, I pray that you would inspire us here this morning, we pray in Jesus' name.

Alright, if you have your Bibles, please turn with me to our passage, Malachi chapter 4, and we are going to be looking at verses 5 and 6.

Last book of the Old Testament, the book of Malachi, chapter 4, looking at verses 5 and 6, and if you get there, if you can let me know by saying amen.

Oh, having hope is always quick to turn to those passages.

Okay, so Malachi chapter 4 verses 5 and 6 the Bible reads, Behold I will send you, who friends?

I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord and he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children and the heart of the children to their fathers lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." So this is our opening passage here this morning.

This is the prophecy that we are going to be studying together.

So here we find that Malachi mentions that there is Elijah the prophet.

The coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

Now we don't have time to go through passages to explain what that is, but that is referring to the second coming.

So here this prophecy says that before the second coming of Christ we are to see Elijah the prophet coming as a messenger.

And he has this message and notice what this message does, what is the result of this message?

It is to turn the heart of the fathers to the children and the heart of the children to the fathers.

This is a message of reconciliation, a message of restoration.

And So what we want to ask is, what does this really mean?

Does this mean that Elijah is going to come down from heaven?

Does this mean that Elijah is going to be a, you know, he's going to come and he's going to reincarnate and he's going to come and preach a message of reconciliation and restoration?

What we want to do is we want to look at this and see what or who this Elijah represents.

I'm going to tell you now that this is not referring to the literal Elijah.

This is not referring to the Elijah that is in heaven right now.

This is actually referring to a group of people in the last days, and we're going to be studying that out this morning.

You know, the Jews, it's interesting enough, they believe that this Elijah that was spoken of by the prophet Malachi, they believe that this is referring to the literal Elijah.

So many of them were expecting Elijah to come back.

And in fact, in Luke 9, verses 18 and 19, you don't have to turn there, but you actually find that the Jews believed that this Elijah was to come back, or the literal Elijah was to come back before this great and dreadful day of the Lord.

Now, in order for us to be able to identify who this Elijah is being spoken of, we're gonna have to look at a few things.

Now, there are 3 Elijahs that I would like to look at this morning.

And the 3, the first 1 is the Historic Elijah.

The second 1 we're going to be looking at is the Prophetic Elijah, also known as John the Baptist.

And then we're going to be looking at the third which is the apocalyptic Elijah.

So we're going to be looking at the third or we're going to try to identify who the third 1 is.

But I'd like to submit to you this morning that in order for us to understand the third, we need to first look at the characteristics of the first and the second.

By the way, how many of you are excited that Jesus is coming soon?

I'm very excited and I'm looking forward to seeing this Elijah rise up before the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

Now, the second coming to us isn't going to be a great and dreadful day of the Lord.

I don't know about you, but I'm very excited.

Last night I had a really interesting dream.

I was dreaming 1 day that I was just kind of walking around and I had this strong impression that somehow Jesus was coming back that day that I was dreaming.

And I was just having this strong impression and in this dream I was just telling everybody about it.

I was like, hey listen, Jesus, for some reason I just had this strong conviction that he's coming back today.

And so I started telling everybody, but no 1 was getting excited.

And I was just like, man, why doesn't, no 1 wanted to believe that Jesus is coming.

And I'm looking at the clouds and there's Jesus, and I'm excited, and lo and behold, all of a sudden I'm like floating in the sky, and I'm taking my friend with me, and whoever that friend was was a lucky person.

I'm just going up and we're rising up together, And we finally get to heaven.

And I see just this beautiful surrounding and I'm just like so blessed to be in heaven.

And I wake up in a dark room and there are Christmas lights from my neighbor's house kind of shining through the window I'm like oh man I wish I was up there but I'm really looking forward to when Jesus Christ will come back but before he comes back we find in the book of Malachi that there needs to be an Elijah that comes.

Turn your Bibles with me to the book of 2 Kings and we're going to be looking at verse or chapter 18.

And we're going to go ahead and look here at a couple passages.

2 Kings, or 1 Kings, I'm sorry, did I say 2 Kings?

And let's go ahead and look at verses 17 and 18.

Now if you don't know the context of the story, this chapter is talking about Elijah, the prophet Elijah, the Old Testament Elijah.
