How to Run a Helping Ministry Without Money

Heavenly Father, we're thankful for your loving kindness that you've shown to us to give us examples of how we should treat others by treating us so well.

Thank you for your grace and your salvation.

I pray that you'll pour your love into our hearts now.

Be with the words that are spoken in this class.

Help us to leave knowing how better to serve you.

I am the Community Services Director for the Michigan Conference.

I don't know if most of you probably know who I am because of who I'm married to, the treasurer.

And most people think that's how I got my job but I have an RN and that's how I got my job.

I love helping people and I want to give you some handouts while I'm bending over here.

I was going to be a social worker and I decided I like science so much that I would go into nursing.

I'll pass them out after I talk about them then.

So I appreciate your help passing them out.

Okay, we're going to start with just an overview of what is community services.

When they think of community services, what do they think of?

I have 65 centers all over the state and most of them, all of them give out food and clothing or just clothing or just food.

And I've noticed when I go on my evaluations and I go through the checklist of what the NAD requires for a center, Most of my center directors even don't know that in order to be accredited with the NAD for a center, you need to do more than just give food and clothing.

You need to teach your clients something.

Have a class on budgeting or how to cook food safely or something to educate them.

We don't want to leave them where they are, we want to improve them.

So ACS is community development, That's where food and clothing comes from.

Food, clothing, and classes, I want you to put those 3 together.

And that's, I would say that's 95% of what we do worldwide.

The next 1 that most people think of, it's what puts us on the map globally and gives us name recognition as 70th Avenue, is disaster response.

People remember who helped them when they've lost everything.

And we have these big trucks with our names spread out.

I think that's the number 1 reason we were recognized globally because of disaster response.

There was another program that has kind of waned slightly.

I don't know if it will come back or not.

They gave us name recognition and that's when we at Christmas time go door to door and ask for money for, wow, in-gathering really is dyed, in-gathering, yeah, because we would say, hi, I'm so and so from the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and that gave us name recognition, but now people don't do that so much.

They give, but they don't go door to door.

Tutoring and mentoring is kind of close to my heart because basically it's if you have something and someone doesn't have it, you transfer.

It's a knowledge transfer, Not just tutoring as in classes, helping children or helping English language, but also just in a mentoring situation, showing someone how to do something.

I had Terry Dodge in a class and I said, Terry's going to like the answer to this question.

And I said, what's the best mentoring program the Adventist Church has?

And I said, Terry will like it, Fast Finders.

And Youth Empowered to Serve is another 1.

Youth led, youth driven, youth energy, just teaching, letting them loose, that youth energy they have, letting them loose on the world to do good, helping them from standing back and letting them, being there to support them and be a resource.

But Youth Empowered to Serve is something I'd like to see more of in the Michigan Conference.

Crisis Care Network kind of goes with disaster response.

A lot of people have been taking that course in the past year.

It teaches you how to counsel someone who's been through a disaster situation.

And right now, there's a lot of them in Orlando, Florida.

The North American Division Disaster Response Director was going to be here today, but he called me yesterday, I'm in Florida, in Orlando.

We have crisis care people from our church partnering with other denominations to be there for what's going on down there from the shooting.

But that kind of goes in partnership with disaster response.

But it is its own department because it's different than the hands-on food and clothing and, you know, clean up things.

It's more geared toward pastors, actually.

And the last 1, and we'll move on, is elder care.

Elder care is really close to my heart because I'm a certified senior advisor.

As a realtor I can tell you it is illegal to discriminate, it's illegal to say okay we don't allow kids in our apartment or you can't specialize in a single person or unmarried or anything as far as your housing goes, except for elderly.

They have senior citizen homes because they have such special needs that it's legal and there's a lot we can do to help our old people.

Some families should take care of their own but some old people don't have families so that's a whole ministry in itself And we'll talk more about that later.

We repair it every time it breaks and it is safe to drive.

And we go out and we test the blood for sugar and cholesterol, we do your blood pressure, We give you a health age appraisal, answering questions on your lifestyle.

I find that as an RN, that's where I fit in best in ACS and my job.

We have a couple English as a second language courses and we also have a mentoring ministry or tutoring ministry basically in New Haven.

Yeah, they have a brand new 1, system going there.

We have a couple of elder care ministries.

Actually, Neighbor to Neighbor, if you ever heard of them, they're in Berrien Springs.

I had to tell them they had an eldercare ministry.

Because they had a fire, they had an arson come in and they had a fire.

And the insurance company said no one's allowed in the building.

And they could not keep those people that are their volunteers.
