Forgiveness and the Time of Jacob’s Trouble

Dear Father in Heaven, I'd just like to thank you for this day of life.

Each day is a blessing, an opportunity to grow closer to you, to understand you more fully for ourselves.

I just pray that you would please be with me now as I speak to your children, also speaking to myself.

I thank you for your spirit that resides in us.

I thank you for the blessed hope of the life to come that we can spend time with you.

And I just look forward to that day and I pray that each person here in their hearts would feel the same.

On September 1st, 2003, Stephen Hatch and Julie Hatch, along with their 3 children, Ian, 5, Austin, 9, and Lindsey, 11, boarded a flight from Boyne City, Indiana, to Fort Wayne, Michigan, to visit their home some 300 miles away.

Stephen was an anesthesiologist, but also a pilot.

And he was piloting the plane that he had owned, a single-prop 1990 Beechcraft Bonanza.

And unfortunately, he made some pre-planning fuel miscalculations that led to the fatal crash of the plane.

Stephen Hatch and Austin Hatch were the sole survivors.

But Stephen remarried some time later to a kind woman named Kim, and Kim had 3 children of her own.

Both she and Stephen both mutually agreed to formally adopt each other's kids.

Stephen and Kim were quite fond of each other, of course, But Stephen had also grown, or Kim had also grown fond of Austin, and Austin quite fond of Kim.

Well, 2011, some 8 years later, after the crash, they took to the sky once again.

And while on approach to Fort Wayne, Michigan, he saw the runway in sight and became apprehensive about the landing.

And rather than following standard protocol and climbing back up to 3, 000 feet to revisit that landing once again, he decided to continue on circling back to approach the runway from the opposite end.

Austin alone, 16 years old, sole survivor.

He lost his mother, his father, his stepmother, his brother, and his sister in a fatal crash.

In fact, it wasn't just a fatal crash, it was 2 fatal crashes.

2 identical tragedies caused by the same person.

But these were tragedies, but they were also accidents.

But what about tragedies that aren't accidents?

What about tragedies that have a more malicious, malignant, devious intent?

How do we safeguard against those tragedies reoccurring?

How do we safeguard against those tragedies repeating themselves?

In 1 John 4 verse 8, John makes a boisterous claim.

Not that God is loving or that he does loving things, but by definition, definitively, He is love.

And so we often would ask in the world, it seems to ask, well, what exactly is love?

You guys turned to 1 John 4, that's great, but we're going to go to 1 Corinthians 13.

1 Corinthians 13, a familiar text, often because it's quoted so much.

Quoted, and also I believe often misquoted.

1 Corinthians 13, starting in verse 4, charity suffereth long and is kind, charity envieth not, Charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." Now if you're reading from the King James or a similar translation probably nothing stood out to you, But many translations actually get a portion of this incorrect.

Rather than, thinks no evil, many translations say, keeps no record of wrongs.

Well, if God is love, and love keeps no record of wrongs, then God keeps no record of wrongs.

And in fact, it's unloving to keep a record of wrongs.

So we're gonna look at a few texts just to support this claim.

Ecclesiastes 12.14, "'For God shall bring every work into judgment with every secret thing whether it be good or whether it be evil.

Matthew 12 36 and 37 Every idle word that men shall speak they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment says the Lord by their words thou shall be Justified and by their words thou shall be condemned.

First Corinthians 4 verse 5 the secret purposes and motives appear in the unerring register, for God will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts.

Finally, Isaiah 65, 6 and 7, behold, it is written before me, your iniquities and the iniquities of your fathers together, sayeth the Lord.

So we have evidence that there definitely is a record, and that's pretty important, but we're talking about whether or not, well, we're trying to ask the question, how do we prevent or at least safeguard these reoccurring tragedies?

Maybe tragedies that you've been the victim of.

Maybe tragedies that you've been responsible for.

I'm going to be reading quite a few texts.

I know that people have attention deficit disorder, so if we need to take a break just to stand at some point, that's fine.

But I'm just letting you know that I'm going to be reading some texts, and I think they're important.

I had to eliminate quite a few just because I felt like I'm going to lose you if I don't.

The subject of the sanctuary and the investigative judgment should be clearly understood by the people of God.

All need a knowledge for themselves of the position and work of their great high priest.

Otherwise, It will be impossible for them to exercise a faith which is essential at this time, or to occupy the position which God designs them to fill.

Every individual has a soul to save or to lose.

Each has a case pending at the bar of God.

Each must meet the great judge face to face.

How important then that every mind contemplate often the solemn scene when the judgment shall sit and the books shall be opened.

When with Daniel every individual must stand in his lot at the end of the days.

It is of the utmost importance that we should all thoroughly investigate these subjects and be able to give an answer to everyone that asks of them, the reason of the hope that is in them.

Now, the sanctuary in itself is a titan of a subject, and we don't have time to cover it all.

The investigative judgment will be spending some time on in a sense, but I wanna give you an overview for the sake of understanding it for those who may not be as familiar.

So, every day, you had lambs and rams and goats and pigeons and cattle, and they were sacrificed.

You had the penitent sinner who would take this pure animal, lay his hands upon it, transfer his sin to the animal.

The organs were burned, the blood was caught, sometimes the meat was eaten, the priest would wash, and then the blood would be taken into the first compartment of the sanctuary.

From that point, the blood would be placed upon the altar of incense and sprinkled upon the veil.

And this would happen not only each day, but hundreds of times per day.

Hundreds and hundreds of times per day, and this was referred to as the daily.

But there were also 7 feasts that took place throughout the year, and they followed a lunar cycle as well as an agricultural cycle, and there was 1 feast in particular that stood out amongst the rest, the Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippur.

This was a day when the high priest alone would also bring in blood, but he would take it into not only the first compartment, but the second compartment, to appear face-to-face in the presence of God, the only time in the year.

It was also the time that recognized that the sins that had been accumulated in that first compartment would finally be eradicated from existence.

This was the 1 feast that recognized them as being pure and holy, perfect.

So that's our overview of the sanctuary for the sake of this message, but again as she says we should study it so we can have an answer for the hope that's in us more thoroughly.

There are so many good books, but Hebrews is my favorite.
