01 The Pilot’s Name: Exodus 1-6

We're going to go ahead and we're going to explore this morning something that I've entitled the flight.

And if you're going to go take a flight, what are some things that you might wish to know?

Well, if you're going to be doing the flying, that's right.

And not only the destination, it's important to know where you're going, but perhaps maybe even more important would be what?

I heard something, but I didn't make it out.

Yeah, you need to know where you're taking off.

Doesn't matter if you know where you're going, but if you get to the wrong spot for the plane, you're going to be left behind.

Now 1 thing that we might not necessarily need to know these days is the pilot's name.

But, if you're on good terms with the pilot, that can be a good thing.

So we're going to take a look at that this morning.

We're going to consider the pilot's name here.

Now, you could probably guess in scripture what kind of a pilot we'd be talking about.

Yeah, we're going to be considering the pilot, the chief pilot.

We're going to be considering Jesus right here.

But there's many places in scripture that we can learn about him.

But we're going to begin with a book that focuses our attention, the very opening words on the subject of name.

Can you think of any book in the Bible that opens with the word name?

If you were a Jew you would know this, which is okay.

That 1 actually, the Hebrew name is in the wilderness.

Turns out, why don't you open your Bibles here.

Turn over to the book of Exodus right there.

And I'm pretty sure no matter what version you might have, that they all say pretty much the same thing.

If you turn to open to Exodus chapter 1, verse 1, what are the first, well, 5 words anyways, if you're in the King James or the New King James?

And then it goes on and it gives the names of the tribes of Israel.

And in fact, if you had a Hebrew Bible, you would know that the name of the book is not Exodus.

We get that actually from the Greek translation, Exobos.

Why don't they call it about the journey in the wilderness or the 10 Commandments or something?

I think it's because names are important.

Not only does it begin in the first 5 verses there with a listing of the names that came out of Jacob's loins and went into Egypt, noting that Joseph was already there.

But it turns out that in the first several chapters, it's very particular about naming people.

Like in chapter 1, have you ever noticed that it draws attention to the names of 2 particular ladies?

But if you notice there, it gives the 2 names, Shifra and Pua.

It could have just said the heads of the midwives, those 2.

There's something important about names in the Bible, right?

And God thinks they're so important that He even changes people's names.

Who are some people in the Bible that He changed the names of?

These 2 people, they had an experience with the Lord and when he saw that their experience reflected a marked change in, I guess, their understanding of the Lord, where they were headed, he changed their name to match that character.

So what we're going to look here in the first couple of chapters, we're going to pay attention to the names and what they mean.

Now, Moving right ahead to Exodus chapter 2, attention is drawn in verse 2.

It says that there was a man from the house of Levi, this is in verse 1, and he took a wife from the daughters of Levi.

And in verse 2 it tells us that she bear a son, right?

And then as you read on in verse 3, she has to do something because you see the Pharaoh that was running at that time was 1 who did not know Joseph, 1 who did not have that close appreciation for 1 of the Hebrews.

And he had made a decree that all the baby boys were to be cast into the Nile.

And it says that she hid him for how long in verse 3 there?

And, you know, if you've had children, you know that you're not going to be able to hide them too well.

I mean you can't keep a pacifier in their mouth all the time.

They're going to make noise, people are going to find out.

She did something that a worldly would look at and say, well, that's just stupid.

Just might as well toss him in the river.

God had said that his people were to be captive in a strange land, Genesis 15, for how many years?

And at this point, 320 of them have elapsed.

And so, nobody knows for sure when that person would be born, but they know that they would have to be grown by the time they'd be delivered.

It wasn't inconceivable that just maybe her son could be the deliverer.

So she prayed that the Lord would protect this baby.

Now, there's a few words in scripture that are translated as ark.

It turns out this 1 right here is, well, let's see, that's a little bit busy.

That's a picture I could find online for free.

But There's supposed to be a picture of Pharaoh's daughter who comes down and she says, in verse 6, this is 1 of the Hebrews' children.
