Sermon On the Mount

Heavenly Father, we come before you at this time just thanking you, Lord, once again for all that you have done.

Lord, as we prepare to leave Army, may this message draw our eyes to you and to your glorious work in us and through us.

May my thoughts be clear And Lord, may our eyes be baptized.

I've entitled this message the sermon on the mount.

I'd like for you to turn in your Bibles to the to the book of Matthew chapter 5, Matthew chapter 5, beloved I believe that the by far the most talked about sermon in all of eternity.

I'm talking about when Jesus comes again and gets his saints and we go back to heaven, the sermon that will be most talked about throughout all eternity I believe without a shadow of a doubt will be the sermon on the mount And you might say pastor I've read the Sermon on the Mount before and I don't know I don't see that perhaps being his most talked about sermon, even though there's some good principles many good principles in there The Sermon on the Mount I've read through that.

I mean not a lot of nice things, but but the most talked about sermon So I'd like for you to go with me if you will to the book of Matthew 5 and we're gonna begin Reading from verse 1 the Bible says and seeing the multitudes he went up into a mountain and was set and his disciples came unto him and he opened his mouth and taught them saying, Now pause.

I believe that these 2 verses are some of the most powerful verses in all the Sermon on the Mount.

And you're probably saying, Pastor, the sermon on the mount hasn't started yet This is just the introduction and I tell you this introduction is packed Usually we run the Risk of you know sermon on the mount I'm gonna shut my mind down because I've read through this already but you all know Better right So here's what we're gonna do we're gonna do something a little bit unorthodox We are talking about the Sermon on the Mount but we're just gonna skip the Sermon on the Mount for a moment is that okay?

I just want to take you through these chapters so notice with me you see the letters in red which means that is the those are the words of Jesus Just just scan down the page with your eyes and Scan all the way down to chat or to rather verse 48 okay, all that is the sermon on the on the mount now go with me to chapter 6 from chapter 6 all the way down to verse 34 all that is the sermon on the mount okay now chapter 7 beginning with verse 1 all of chapter 7 is the Sermon on the Mount.

So so Christ spends 3 chapters here giving the Sermon on the Mount but I want you to notice how he closes the sermon.

Verse 21 of chapter 7 Jesus says not everyone that saith unto me Lord Lord shall enter into the kingdom of heaven But he that doeth the will of my father which is in heaven Many will say to me in that day Lord Lord Have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name have cast out devils and in thy name done many wonderful works Then will I profess unto them.

I never knew you Depart from me ye that work iniquity So what Christ is doing here is he's saying that there are many who will do what?

Say Lord Lord but will not enter the kingdom of heaven because they're not what?

Okay now Notice how he now wraps up the Sermon on the Mount.

He says, therefore whosoever hear these things of mine and do with them, I will liken him unto a what?

Wise man, which built his house upon a rock and the rain descended and the floods came and the winds blew and beat upon that house and it fell not for it was founded upon a rock as I have suggested to you in previous messages I believe that whenever we read the scriptures we should seek to find Christ in what we're reading amen?

So I want to propose to you at this point, it's an early proposal but I want to propose to you that the wise man in this parable is none other than Jesus Christ.

Let's assume that that is the case for a moment.

If Christ is the wise man that built his house upon a rock, Then we would ask the question, what is the house that he built?

Go with me to the book of 1 Peter chapter 2.

1 Peter 2, verse 5, notice what the Bible says here Wherefore or you also are Lively stones or as lively stones are what?

Built up a spiritual what house So let me ask you if you are the spiritual house, then who did the building?

Jesus is the wise man that built his house upon the rock it says you also as living stones are built up a spiritual house a holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ Wherefore also it is contained in Scripture, behold I lay in sign on a chief cornerstone elect precious and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

So notice something here the chief cornerstone upon which the house is built is who?

Let's read on verse 7 unto you therefore which believe he is precious but unto them which be disobedient the stone which the builders disallowed the same is made the head of the corner, and the stone of stumbling, and a what?

Rock of offense, even to them which stumble at the word being disobedient.

So notice how Jesus says that the cornerstone upon which the house was built is also known as a rock a what everyone?

Christ is the wise man that built his house or the church upon a rock but he calls it a rock of offense so let's see what is that rock of offense that is being spoken of here go with me again if you will to the book of 1st Corinthians 1st Corinthians chapter 1 1st Corinthians chapter 1 and verse 23 when you get there please say amen.

The Bible says but we preach Christ what?

Stumbling block What is the stumbling block or the rock of offense it is Christ what?

Crucified Christ is the wise man That builds his house upon builds his house.

His church upon a rock But it is a rock of offense or stumbling and that rock of offense or stumbling is what?

Go with me if you will to the book of Matthew chapter 16.

Matthew chapter 16 beloved it is evident here.

It will become evident here that Christ is indeed the wise man That builds his house or the church upon the rock and the rock we're going to see very shortly Matthew chapter 16 verse 16 Jesus is speaking to his disciples and in verse 15.

He says unto them whom say ye that I am Simon Peter answered and said thou art the Christ the Son of the Living God Jesus answered and said unto him blessed art thou Simon Barjona for flesh and blood has not revealed it unto thee but my Father which is in heaven and I say also unto thee thou art Peter and upon this what?

Rock will I build my church And the gates of hell shall not what?

Christ is the wise man who builds his house or his church upon a rock And the rock is Christ and him crucified.

But in Matthew 16, we're told that it is the acknowledgement that Christ is the Son of God.

So our question then becomes, can this be verified?

Did Christ actually build His house upon a rock which represents His crucifixion and the acknowledgement that he indeed is the son of God.

I want you to turn with me to the book of Mark chapter 15.

Mark 15 verse 39, when you get there, please say amen.

The Bible says, and when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he had so cried out what's happening here Jesus is about to die and notice what happens when Jesus dies.

When he saw saw that he cried out and gave up the ghost he said truly this man was who?

The very first confession, is anybody with me?

The very first confession upon Christ's death is a Roman centurion saying the exact thing Peter said and the exact thing Christ said upon that confession said, upon that confession will I build my church.

What made this Roman centurion look at Jesus and say truly this man was a son of God?

It was his Death Beloved do you want people to say of you truly?

Truly this man, this woman is a son of God, a daughter of God.

Do you want people to say that about you raise your hand you want people?

Guess what you need to do Die You see Beloved this Roman centurion had evidently heard about this Jesus and heard about his works and maybe even heard his words But it is not until Jesus Demonstrated He didn't just talk.

And it is this confession that causes the Roman soldier to say truly this man was the son of God.

In the book Desire of Ages, we read this, in the closing events of the crucifixion day, fresh evidence was given of the fulfillment of prophecy and new witness born to Christ's divinity.

When the darkness had lifted from the cross and the Savior's dying cry had been uttered, immediately another voice was heard saying, "'Truly this man was a son of God.' These words were said in no whispered tones.

The divine patience of the sufferer and his sudden death with a cry of victory upon his lips had impressed this heathen in the bruised broken body hanging upon the cross the centurion recognized the form of the Son of God and he could not refrain from confessing his faith.
