The Mock Trial

The state of Hawaii and the county of Honolulu, Supreme Court is now in session.

We have an interesting case before the court today.

We have a group of Christians, which is you, that are on trial.

We have a group of esteemed prosecutors from the state of Hawaii who want to challenge you folks on what you believe.

The parties have stipulated that the rule book today will be the Bible, the Word of God.

To give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear." We're not here to instill fear in anybody, but that's what the Bible says today.

And so the prosecutors will come up 1 by 1.

And the way it works here is we'll give a person a volunteer an opportunity to respond to the question and answer it to the satisfaction of the prosecutor.

And if they don't, we'll give a second person an opportunity to respond.

Only 2, maximum of 2 witnesses per question, and then the prosecutor may give additional information to augment the answer at the end.

Bailiff, can we do something about that noise?

Well when your courtroom's built by the lowest bidder, sometimes they build it on top of an airport.

So I understand that our audience, those of you that are on trial, are the group known as the Seventh-day Adventists.

Well, it's unfortunate that you have decided to be adventist because it is clear that your beliefs do not measure up with the word of god, for example, I'd like for you to take your bibles And I'd like for you to open up to the book of Acts chapter 20.

Acts chapter 20 and please notice with me verse 7.

Acts chapter 20 verse 7 the Bible says and upon the first day of the week When the disciples came together to break bread and we can just stop right there The Bible makes it clear that the early church met on the first day of the week.

The fact that you guys as Adventists keep the seventh day of the week seems contrary to the Word of God.

Do we have any volunteers that would like to answer the question?

And so the question is, why do you as Seventh-day Adventists keep the seventh day When the book of Acts chapter 20 verse 7 specifically tells us that the early church met on the first day of the week This gentleman over there.

We have a Come up quickly, sir, please You could just come up here to the right side of the stage we have a microphone here for the witnesses.

That says, for the people supposed to be keeping the Sabbath in the last time.

According to Revelation 14, verse 12, I think I know that verse pretty well speaks about keeping the commandments of God and having the faith of the testimony of Jesus.

But my point is that Sunday is the commandment of God.

And so again, I ask, How is it that Acts 20, verse 7 clearly says?

Clearly says that the early church kept the first day of the week.

Genesis 2, 1 to 3 says that the lord finished the work in 7 days they Sanctified that day Okay I think he's really wanting to know what your response is to what ax says not what other verses say Do you have an answer for what Axe talks about?

In the Old Testament, I agree, the Sabbath was the seventh day of the week, but in the New Testament, because of Christ's sacrifice on the cross, and He rose upon the first day of the week, the Bible, the New Testament Church kept the first day of the week.

Do you want to take 1 more crack at it, sir?

All right, I think he's really want to know if you can respond to what Ax says, not other verses.

You read very good that verse that says exactly that I have to do.

Sir, can you please come over here the correct way?

Just so you know, this area is called the well.

No 1 approaches the well unless you have permission.

The question was asked 20 verse 7 and upon the first day of the week, okay, they, the question asked 20 verse 7 upon the first day of the week when the disciples came together to break bread.

Why do we keep the seventh day when it's obvious here that the disciples were meeting on the first day of the week?

Well, my understanding, and I think a lot of Seventh-day Adventists' understanding of this verse stems from our belief that the day, in biblical sense, actually begins in the evening.

So, unfortunately, to support that, I did have to go to the Old Testament where it says that in the evening and morning were the first day.

So if you actually go back to the creation event itself, the evening and the morning, the day is defined as the evening first, then the morning.

So if you go to Acts 20, verse 7, it says here, the first day of the week, the disciples came together to break bread, and that Paul preached on them, ready to depart on the morrow, and his speech continued until midnight.

So what actually happened was, Paul was preaching to them until midnight Saturday night And then he was going to depart after that Sunday morning, so that's I did have to use the old.

Let me add very quickly, if you also go to the book of Acts chapter 2, verse 46, you'll see, 42 and 46, you'll see that the early church broke bread every day of the week.
