True Repentance

I pray that you are thankful to God to be in the house of prayer this evening and I'm trusting that you have prepared your hearts to hear the Lord speak to you.

This weekend we're dealing with revival And you know that there's never true revival without reformation.

And tonight, we just want to emphasize a very, very key dynamic in the experience of true revival.

And I believe that if we can get this right, if we can get this first step, then by the grace of God, it will prepare us for all the other progressive steps we need to take until we find ourselves in the arms of Jesus.

And so we're gonna prepare our hearts for tonight's study as we look at God's call to true repentance.

And I'd like to invite as many of you as are able to kneel with me as we approach the Lord in prayer at this time.

Our Father in heaven, we praise you and thank you that you have brought us all safely through another week.

You've blessed us with life, health, and strength.

Father, we thank you so much that you still have found enough value in our lives to count us amongst the land of the living.

And we know, Lord, that The breath of life that you invested in us today, you expected a return on that investment.

And that return was that we were to offer you praise and thanksgiving and full surrender.

We ask you, Lord, to please forgive us for falling short of your glory.

We ask you that you would please be merciful upon us and that you would send your Holy Spirit at this time.

That you would truly and indeed open our eyes and help us to behold wondrous things out of your law.

Send your spirit dear God and may he minister to our minds and may we be drawn heavenward.

This is our prayer that we ask in Jesus' name.

What is a message without the Word of God.

So we want to make sure that we all have our Bibles in hand.

And you're going to find that what we're going to study tonight, I believe, is fundamental.

But what God's people need is fundamentals.

And Sometimes we can get so excited about all of the latest and newest and the greatest things, but if we don't remember and commit to heart and into daily practice the simple things that God has taught us to do so that we can finish this race, all the other things won't count.

I want you to notice something that the Bible tells us in the book of Matthew, the third chapter.

In Matthew, the third chapter, we look at a man by the name of John the Baptist.

John the Baptist was 1 who needed to prepare people for their God.

And the Bible says in Matthew, the third chapter, and we're going to start at verse 1 and take it to verse 3, looking at the life and the ministry of John the Baptist.

The Bible says, In those days came John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, Repent ye for the kingdom of heaven is at hand, for this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah saying, the voice of 1 crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord and make his paths straight.

John the Baptist, when he understood where he was in time and he understood Bible prophecy, John the Baptist knew that the people needed a message that was very straight and that was very direct and the message was could not be any straighter than simply saying repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

You'll find that as John the Baptist was doing his ministry and giving his work, and as he was called of God to get the people ready for the coming of the Lord, eventually he found himself in prison.

And as John the Baptist ended up in prison, you find that as his ministry was phasing out, another ministry was phasing in.

And I want you to see that ministry in the book of Mark, chapter 1.

The Bible says in Mark, the first chapter, speaking about John the Baptist, and as he was giving his message and his call to those to let them know that they are to repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand you'll find that as he was put in prison and his ministry was now going on the decrease there was another ministry that was going on the increase and notice whose ministry it was the Bible says and mark the first chapter and if you dare say amen the Bible says and mark chapter 1 in verse 14 it says now after that John was put in prison, who came into Galilee?

This is the ministry that was on the increase.

It says, now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God.

And it says in verse 15, and saying the time is fulfilled, The kingdom of God is at hand.

As John's ministry was going on the decrease and Christ's ministry was coming up on the increase, Jesus picked right back up where John left off.

And Jesus now is on the scene and Jesus is telling everybody repent because the kingdom of God is at hand.

But then eventually Jesus ascended and as Jesus ascended into heaven Jesus knew that probation was about to close on his own people because they were under a 490-year probationary time to get victory over sin.

But because they did not enter into the experience of righteousness by faith, they had no victory.

And therefore, here it is that as Jesus ascended into heaven and began his ministerial work in the holy place of the heavenly sanctuary you will notice that when probation closed on Israel and now the message was to go to the Gentiles, the very man that God used, who was none other than Paul to preach to the Gentiles.

Go to the book of Acts, the 17th chapter.

Notice what the Bible says in Acts, the 17th chapter.

First, John the Baptist, then Jesus himself, and now we're looking at Paul.

The Bible says in Acts, the 17th chapter, Paul runs into a group of individuals who were worshipping an unknown God.

And Paul wanted to proclaim who that unknown God was, and he began to teach them about Jesus.

And as he did it, he got to a point in his sermon that he makes a very powerful point right here in Acts the 17th chapter, and we're now going to go ahead and consider verse 30.

The Bible says, as Paul was summarizing his message, that in verse 30 he says unto them, and the times of this ignorance God winked at, but now commandeth all men everywhere to do what?

Once again, here goes the message of repentance.

The message of repentance is a message that is on the mind of God, and anyone who is a servant of God, that message should be on their minds as well.

And therefore you will find that the Bible is calling us as God called John, as God worked through Jesus, as God worked through Paul, and The message was the same.

A message of a call to repentance is the same message that God has given to his people in the last days, before this world comes to a close.

The message is not to tell everybody that everything is all right.

In fact, you will find that that's the actual problem.

There are many individuals today that believe that the more that we preach about a message saying that everything's all right, everybody's all right, that the more that we preach this kind of message, that this supposedly is the message.

Notice what the Bible says in Revelation, the third chapter.

The Bible says in Revelation chapter 3, God sees a people of the judgment, Laodicea.

And as he sees them, he sees them going through challenges, and I want you to notice specifically what the challenge is.

The Bible says in Revelation chapter 3, and we're going to go ahead and start at verse 14.

You know these texts very well, I would imagine.

The Bible says, And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God.

It says, I know thy works that thou art neither cold nor hot.

I would thou were cold or hot and so then because thou art lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of my mouth." Now what would make God want to vomit?

Sooner or later you've got to ask that question.

What in the world could it be that could make God such a wonderful divine individual?

What could make him to the point that he actually would equate his displeasure to the experience of vomiting.

The Bible tells us exactly what it is right there in verse 17.

It says, Because thou sayest, I am rich and increased with goods and have need of nothing.
