The Inevitability

I have no intention of keeping you past quitting time, so I'm going to speak quickly.

I was going to tell you something about health, the health evangelism program that Don McIntosh is spearheading on the campus of Weimar Institute.

I don't have too much time to tell you about that, which is just as well, You want to hear it from Don, a four-month program combining evangelism training with health evangelism training.

It's a terrific program, and I'd encourage you to know something about that.

You've got a booth over there, haven't you?

And I know I'm on this side of the country.

It has written evangelism training programs on that side of the country.

So if you are from out there, or you know somebody out there, think about SALT.

We've got a great team, soul winning in leadership training.

I am encouraged by the proliferation of viable evangelism training institutions across this country.

If you think back just 20 years, there were that many.

And now there's kind of a lot, and I'm kind of thankful to God for that.

Father, we are grateful that we can be here today.

We ask for your blessing with confidence.

Bless these few minutes for your glory, we pray.

This has been a different sort of experience.

So if you would, please let us end on a high note and encourage us again.

However, there's something from 2003 that you will remember like it happened just yesterday.

A little further down the coast, you'll come to the city of San Diego.

Go 30 miles out and you are now 30 miles out to sea.

It was there, May the 1st, 2003, that then President George W.

Now later on, the critics said he should have traveled by helicopter.

The powers that be said it was too far for the helicopter.

Well, you have a point, but when we first planned it, the ship was going to be further out, so we just stuck with the original plan.

And he landed as a passenger in a jet aircraft on the ship itself, and I should be able to tell you the name of the vessel, I can, it was the USS Abraham Lincoln.

He landed in a Lockheed S3 Viking and in the photo op, to beat all photo ops, he appeared before a banner that proclaimed loudly 2 words and a big message.

This will mark the end of hostilities in Iraq.

Am I trying to take a pot shot at the president, former president?

It's just a matter of the historical record that after President George W.

Bush said mission accomplished, that the bulk of the casualties took place or happened or occurred in Iraq.

You see, he thought the battle had been won.

He thought that the US had done just about everything that needed to be done to the extent that he could proclaim victory as an absolute certainty.

Sometimes victory seems certain, doesn't it?

I was talking to my son and, well, you know, back in New Zealand where I'm from, the largest church is the Roman Catholic Church.

That's the church I used to be a part of.

Then you have some other churches, Baptist Church and some non-denominational churches.

But the biggest religion in New Zealand is rugby.

And I know I probably shouldn't, but I can't help just keeping track of the progress of my local team.

And last year we won a championship, and the year before that we won the championship too, and it's a big deal because it's against the top teams from Australia and South Africa, as well as at home in New Zealand, and our team, the Chiefs, I mean, after years of futility and misery, made it to the top of the heap, you know, and then repeated the next year.

And this year, I mean, a three-peat was all but inevitable.

And Our team started off with 4 or 5 wins in a row.

My son said to me, Dad, I think we can go the whole season unbeaten.

Oh no, man, he said, look at who we've got to play.

I said, we beat everybody last year, but it's a new year.

Oh man, no, I am sure, it's certain, We hung up a banner in our house that said, Mission Accomplished.

And our team, the Chiefs, have won 1, drawn 2, and lost 3.

We have done everything but win them all.

It is obvious we're not going to run the table.

And it is up in the air as to whether or not we'll make the playoffs.

I mean it, I could and probably should care less.

But we think we see a certain thing, we say it's an inevitability.

Bush said, all we need to do is walk through Iraq with mops and mop up the rest and It's all over, then we are done.

Sometimes you can think something is certain.

But we weren't on top of the Eiffel Tower.
