The Genesis of Purpose

I'm going to speak to you guys today on the topic, the genesis of purpose.

At the end of the day, isn't that ultimately what life is all about?

And so that's exactly what we are going to talk about today.

So I mentioned that I'm a psychiatrist and in being a psychiatrist, 1 of the things I found was that the great theorists, In order to be a great theorist, you had to come up with an explanation of why things are the way they are, okay?

And for a theory to really be great, it would need to explain phenomenon, it would need to be able to give you a diagnosis, it would need to help you frame your treatment plan and actually be a solution to the problem.

Sigmund Freud and you know that he had the audacity to actually be influenced by Greek mythology in his search for truth.

So I said to myself, if he could be bold enough to allow mythology and to search mythology to find truth, perhaps I should be bold enough to search the pages of scripture to see if it may have some truths that would be relevant to my patient care.

And I'm gonna present to you today what it is that I found.

Now, so I thought to myself, You know, I love my daughter a great deal.

And if I was going to write instructions, life-giving instructions, place them in a book and give them to her, I thought to myself, where would I place the most important instructions?

Okay, if they were really vital, where would I place them?

Would I place them at the back of the book?

Would I place them in the middle of the book?

Or would I place them right at the beginning?

So I went to Genesis, and you can go there with me, Genesis chapter 1 and verse 1.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

It didn't really seem like that really impacted you.

And the reason is, your minds are still intoxicated.

Maybe you'll just have to advance it for me.

Some of you came in and you were still burdened by the cares of life.

And so what I very quickly realized was that the Bible is written for the sober mind.

And So you say to yourself, well, what exactly is sober?

So Peter warns in 1 Peter, be sober and be vigilant, because our adversary the devil, like a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour.

So whenever you have a moment of quiet, whenever you are still, what are the questions that come to your mind?

Whenever you have a moment of peace, what are those moments?

These are the burning questions that sit within us that anytime we have a moment of stillness, they come to the surface.

And now, next slide, The other issue that we come to realize is there is a lot of suffering around us.

So we want to know what our purpose is, but we also want to know What's the reason for all this suffering?

So now in that context, let's go to the scripture.

And what you see now is your needs have been brought to a creator.

Isn't it frustrating to go to a marriage therapist who themself is having a divorce?

Isn't it frustrating going to a banker who you find out is on the verge of bankruptcy.

When we go to the pages of scripture what we find is we're bringing our needs to a creator.

And so how does And so how does he create by the way?

Okay, so day 1 he said, let there be light.

Okay and so I'm ready to introduce my theory to you.

My theory is when we look at Genesis 1, God is modeling for us how we should create in our lives.

We're burdened with this desire to understand, hey, what is my purpose?

And what God is going to do in those 7 days is He's going to outline how you should create in your life.

And so the first thing we crash into is he creates through the power of his word.

He is so committed to his word, it has creative power.

When you make promises, people expect you to keep them.

All right, so this serves me right, because my wife always says, don't be so focused on keynote.
