So I want to start by giving a I guess you could call it a metric in order to decide how to to know what is really a crop we're growing and this is actually from Ernest Selmes book the urban farmer he uses something that is called the crop value rating this is something he came up with and I think it's a it's a really good way to to look at crops and decide is this really worth my time growing now. I just want to say a few caviar before we get into this too much current is so if you remember is the 1 growing on a quarter of an acre and so that is so intensive that he can't grow a lot of crops so he is super focus on the most profitable crops you know even if it's a crop that everybody wants in life he doesn't have room to grow it so that's why he's able to 0 in on the most profitable crops. But he has 5 criteria then uses to to judge a crop by. If you can tell us how to do it we would love that. And we'll just go ahead in the meantime lyrics. That see. Do do we need to. First I think it was or before when my. OK overtake will. Be. The 1st the final criteria is shorter days to maturity. He's looking for things with less then 60 days or 60 days or less to maturity. And that's that's something that I had kind of figured out on my own. You know like with potatoes. I have again I don't know how it is here so I just assume it's not too much different but with potatoes in the states they're divided into 3 general categories you have a short day to maturity intermediate and long the day through the Word and the long days to be $120.00 days or more to maturity. And the shorter date varieties can be. 60 days or a little more. So the question is why would you grow 120 days her ID. I wonder thank you so much I think this came with it says if so. OK Wonderful thank you. My son in law is a computer whiz. And he's always been around to help us that our Congress is over there. Blessing to have people who know what they're doing. OK and easier for everybody. Trying not to. OK so yeah if you can grow potato in 60 days Why grow it a 120 days Same with tomatoes you know just look horizon now granted sometimes the ones that have have a longer days to maturity may be more flavorful Are there may be some reason why people like to grow them but what I've found you know the longer they're in the garden the greater the chance is you're going to get some kind of disease or the surgeon and find them so you know you want to get up in an hour as quick as possible so that's his 1st criteria 2nd 1 is high yield per year. How much could this kraut yield. Per linear for and he gives an example in his book of well the best example and easiest example to look out for a high value crop is that it. Let us you can grow a nice head of lettuce in a square foot. How much to that do with does a head of lettuce sell for here. And $3.00 anyway. Well that's actually pretty you know we sell them a nice big head for $3.00. That's $3.00 per square foot and I'm kind of getting in ahead of myself here but. It's only in the garden for a month because we started in transplant it's you know their proximity 60 days to maturity so the 1st mine. Is in a greenhouse all compact we've got a lot of plant gather in the garden for 1 month and we earn $3.00 per square foot. And theoretically Now it depends on climate you know we were still struggling to grow lettuce in the summer and in our line. It is too high and they get bitter. But we grow it spring fall and winter protection so over the spring and fall and winter theoretically you could grow. Or crop. In 1 where. The. How intensively you are doing so that's $12.00 worth of it. And. You've got 43000 are. Obviously you've got to take out pathways that you see the idea of lettuce can be and. So you're looking at how much her linear but and again this is his his criteria are based on that 30 inch wide bit so a linear foot is really 2 and a half feet right. And so he's looking for things that will produce at least half a. Have honed in that 2 and a half where he. Yes. We did not grow iceberg lettuce The question is on what he's of lettuce you know iceberg lettuce in the states that's grown in California and it's. It's rather nutritionally bank and very bland. So both in fact I don't know of any market gardeners that grow iceberg lettuce to grow you know we grow. Again I don't know what terms you use here but good for butter head lettuce. Is melt in your mouth we grow remain we grow. Just kind of like a loose leaf lettuce you know the beauty of lettuce is that there are so many colors and. Varieties that is I mean it's the most beautiful kraut to grow and it's 1 of the easier crops to grow these for us and it's 1 of the most profitable crops to grow so it's really. Lettuce is where it's at in my. Mind mine OK The other 3 high priced I don't. Know how much how much you make on minimum he says a $4.00 a pound now salad mix. We sell for $8.00 to $10.00 a pound. So and of course you make more if you sell it in small Most people don't want to pound the salad mix that's a lot of. You. So you sell it by the quarter pound and you sell it for $4.00 a quarter. Then it's really trouble. $616.00. See I honestly I don't do any of the marketing I just focus on growing Oh you. Were charged right. If you have a quarter pound price and then half price. OK long harvest period. 4 months now this 1 is a little tricky because there's 2 ways to look at it 1 would be something like tomatoes that 1 plant could be harvested over 4 months if they can hear broccoli. But the other way to look at it it is like radishes radishes is the quickest crop in and out of the garden $21.00 days so you can successively plant it for at least 4 months out of the year depending on where you live your climate some people can grow your around. We don't again we don't try to grow radishes in. In the hottest time of the year because the flavor. Shark and then the last. Criteria is popularity. Obviously. You can grow wonderful stuff but if nobody wants it you're in and do very well so high demand and or low market saturation you know again this is this classic example of this is tomatoes for us you know in the summer time. There's piles of tomatoes that market and and then a lot of people grow tomatoes at home maybe just a plant or 2 in their backyard but trying to sell tomatoes in July is a challenge because everybody has the market is saturated but if you have tomatoes in May where nobody else has. You can charge we charge $4.00 a pound and. Have no problem selling. OK so you all have this in your mind so Curtis Stone when he looks just you know trying to decide what he should grow he he uses these 5 criteria and I'm suggesting here good for you to think about number 1 short days to maturity to high yield for linear foot 3 high price per pound for long harvest period and $5.00 is popularity so what we're going to do here is go through a list of crops with a high C.B.R. our crop value rating. Now we call this the reveal of you call a rocket. Rocket is a fire over 55 out of 5 because it's very fast some varieties mature in 21 days they have multiple cuttings and you can grow it in our climate. Again $33.00 seasons out of the year at least some people grow through the summer. It's it's quite popular it's growing in popularity you know like Rocky. It's. 1 of those things either you love it or hate it if you don't love it I say you need to learn to love it because it's super nutritious it's really really good. Still you start by just adding a little to your salad but then once you become addicted to it. You can have it as the big years. OK So that's 1 that meets all the criteria at least for Curtis Stone now you know I'll say hear it and emphasize it throughout the thing obviously. Different parts of the country and different countries there may be some variability with this although I I think that there's probably more similarities than very deliberate So if there are any of these things I mention you say oh Ozzy's don't like that at all let me know because that be interesting to know. This is another 1 I changed for my presentation here we just call him beat you cone beetroots. This is a C.B.R. 4 out of 5 which do you think it doesn't meet. OK Well again it might vary for climate but most beats take a little longer than 60 days to maturity. All that's is on the edge there but we were surprised by this many years ago our 2 biggest root crops for profitability are here and. You know I I never like the feeling I'm still. Trying to learn I eat them. I don't choose them but I will eat them because they know they're good for me. But a lot of people don't like the fact clearly there's plenty of people that do because you know I mean we sell $100.00. I'm embarrassed but that's what the market sells them for you get a good series. Of dollars. Are they. Are OK that's interesting I kind of thought there was a British thing that. In particular here. In the Gourmet Market Yeah well. You know. The the market gardening movement is influencing the Gorman market and vice versa it's a very symbiotic relationship. Carrots C.V.R. 4 out of 5 again carrots take at least 60 days some of them longer I mean most of them longer actually but. That's pretty good for out of 5 K. you know we're talking about big kale. You know the beauty of scale and again it's somewhat climate dependent but it can go for months you know right Bailey has plants you know this fall and I've seen them you know this fall. You just they they go and go and tail has become very popular in the last 10 years in America. I don't know what is the ocular here. Are. Parted. OK particular varieties I hesitate to to start doing that because. You know I have no idea what you can get here our favorite variety and I'll tell you. We love to grow carrots in there with you. And they mature as the days are getting shorter and coolers and we need. To. Be as we. And is this is something we learn from it called calls and candy here and I can tell you they are the sweetest carrots you've ever tasted and we use of variety called Bolero Bolero It's a hybrid care. And. Boy. That's something we should talk about at some point I don't even have it in here talking about hybrid vs open and all you all. You know some people think hybrids are cool I don't personally believe. Now. There are disadvantages of hybrid. In that you can't save the. But they're also very good advantage hybrids they are reliable in your market. Rely literally so we're not a host of hybrids although if we have a choice. And they have similar quality will definitely choose the open pollinated variety. But we don't shy away from ribs so the layer was a hybrid but. I wish I wish we could have brought you some of our Here is right now is the height of here season. My son we have well we planted his seed about 200000 here. And they sell well. Yes carrots and fact we're going to talk about that more here so lettuce is a 5 over 5 it's it's hard to go wrong with lettuce Mike or Greens everybody know what my purines are I don't know how popular that is here that's a Gore made thing and I keep thinking it's a trend that's going to fade away but it doesn't seem to be happening it's still going strong we don't grow micro greens but they keep things and we need to start growing herd is still a lot Well I think pretty much all of these guys that are making super high dollars are growing my greens because the beauty is you just roam in a tree flat whatever you call here just a little soil in the seeds on and they're they're. Usually harvested at the 1st true leaves you know you have the heartily as you call them that the 1st easy come up and then you have the true the. And they're harvested there are so many of them take 2 weeks or less to grow so super fast turnaround the most popular ones are peach shoots. And sunflowers few. That are grown as migrant greens superfast. How to you know they the restaurants use them a lot as a garnish on a salad. Again you have to do some research on the market. A lot of people making a lot of money on my green. Yes if you are. Well we differentiate sprouts are just usually the collies you know sprouts are smaller than Mike Green There's actually sprouts like your dreams and then shoot some things like corn corn is often grown as shoots you know a little bigger and it's harvest and. Of course we grass is another thing that that's kind of in a different category. Anyway we're not going to talk a lot about micro dreams but it's something that you may want to research. You know I did want to say I feel like you all because I sense that a strip is a few years behind the U.S. in the whole small farm. Market gardening movement field that really positions you as an advantage if you want to get into it because there's not as much competition. You can be trendsetters I'm telling you you know J.M. encourages are coming over here people are paying a lot of money to go to their seminars it's going to happen I mean it is happening and you know I'd love to see more ads and it's getting in on the ground floor of that opportunity. So let's just keep going here radishes are 4 out of 5 I can't remember I'd have to look. Why he says they're a 4 rather than a 5 maybe tail. You know we grow the big tail and usually the most popular kind is the curly tail of the green truly. And there's another variety we call la Sonata sound only or dinosaur ale do you know what I'm talking about their dark leaves kind of strap. Those are the 2 most popular times we grow but then we grow red Russian tail Are you familiar with that that's grown that's the main baby kale that's grown and you know by baby we're talking about this big big enough that you can get it in your mouth when will you grow it intensively and. Harvest it with something like this the Greens harvester and. You can get multiple It will really grow if you cut it at the right height so usually you don't sell baby kale plain you mix it with other greens and make a nice salad mix. OK And the next 1 salad mix so you'll notice if the you know the direct. The baby Kate the salad mix lettuce these are all the 5 over 5. This salad mix we're probably in March to be unless it's you might put some some ripe it and there you say rock it or it can see it's actually a French name. Rotate I don't know French. But stuff. Like tires they could tell right by. But so is so a salad mix might include rocket K. old lettuce and then there is there is dozens of Asian greens that most people have never heard of but that soil. In the soup. Yeah well that's a bark choice is 1 that's not usually grown as a baby for salad I mean I guess maybe it could be but there's and you know I have a Johnnie's kind of walking here and I would encourage you to look at it just to see the tremendous amount of. Reasons Asian greens the mustard you know there's a lot of different kinds of mustard seed and depending on your market lot of people don't like the really spicy mix but you can put a little and some of them are really really colorful you know you want to mix that has color has a variety of flavors it has loft so you like those really kind because it keeps it from still in the other. Turnips. Well we're going to talk about these more so spinach is big. Everybody likes spinach here while that's 1 of our main crops in the winter spin it's lettuce and care are the 3 big ones in the winter for us. Is really well and tomatoes. Notice that's a 3 over 5. Again I'd have to look at exactly how he rates that are why Greeks in that way but. I don't think it's worth time for that now so so now what we're going to do is go through some of these and give just a few any good in this is just brushing the surface but a few tips or ideas on how you grow them. So baby greens this is the big 1. So there are some keys to that you want to really have a very smooth bed and a weed free bed. Because you can imagine whether you're using something like this or whether you're just using a knife or scissors. If there's a lot of variation in the bed or if there's rocks or sticks it really slows you down and you don't want anything in your mix you know you don't want dirt and stuff in your mix obviously you'll you know you. I say obviously but a lot of some people don't wash their mix especially if it's grown in a group house and you don't have dirt splashing on it the less you handle it the better so if it's if you do a really good job growing it you may not need to wash it all. But anyway you you need a nice smooth bed but the biggest key is a weed free seabed if you have because you're growing it very intensively this is 1 kind of cedar you can use 3 passes of this on a 30 inch bed will give you 12 rows per bed and that's how most most. Baby remains are grown well. There are variations on that but. It's to chew intensive so we are to cultivate the only way you can get weeds out is by hand and I'll just give you a general rule that any time you have to get down on your hands and knees just lost the profit from that crop if you can't grow it standing up then it's probably not going to make money so you really want to keep off your hands and knees now. I would say the 1 exception to that maybe carrots because carrots are profitable enough and they're slow growing enough that you often have to go through and do a little bit of hand reading. But. You want to avoid that and reading at all costs of support and when we get to the weeding 1 which is tomorrow I'll give you 12 different. Tips for for keeping your beds we 3. By the way don't be afraid to stand up and move around a little bit if you need to I know especially you have to watch the brain in the sluggishness and you might need to get some oxygen to it. OK so seized with a high density cedar in now I say usually 7 to 12 rows per bed there's another cedar I don't have here I wish I could have brought all my tools with me Rod Bailey has been gracious to bring his tools. So I won't get into that more now but because we'll talk about that more with tools but Curtis Stone uses a James cedar it's a single rose cedar but it's fast and doesn't require quite as much preparation and he will do. Like 7 rows for a lot of these baby crops per bed. By anyone using this or there's another 16 rows in or this is the 4 rows in there they're going to be doing it 12 rows per bed need Good morning sir for germination but then make sure not to over water this is that balancing act that farmers have to find you know when when this is just been planted you need to keep that bed mornings you've got you want really even germination there's nothing more are. I would catch myself when I say there's nothing but there is it's very disappointing to have a. Sparsely seeded bed when you're wanting it really whole and tidy so you want to make sure you've got a good germination but as soon as that stuff germinates and starts coming up you have to really be parallel with the water because it's packed in so tight that there's not so much airflow and you can easily start getting some more in Herat. If to overwater. Water and is really important. Harvest with a quick cut Harvester this is not a promotion of my son's thing but as I said this morning. You know Curtis know you can go on You Tube and watch his videos on how to use this thing he he I've heard him say I would never get into marketing gardening without this tool here I mean he he could do what he's doing without that tool because it's so almost so much faster then harvesting right which was the only other option for this will come along. Whether these or. Any of your baby crops are what you use the quick cut Harvester for baby lettuce or root. K. all types saw a Zune. Anything that you're growing for baby salad mix OK growing baby lettuce. I just need to make sure I was staying on target here. When I put the schedule so when does this. These these 2 kind of meld together here so we're going to try that and by. 255 or so we can have a little bit of a little bit of a break before the next 1 so. We now use Salah Nova lettuce for all our quote baby lettuce has anyone ever heard of salad. So this is this is new within the last few years it's actually a lettuce bread to grow head part I mean at least grow big but yet it's all small the rather than than the least getting big it just puts out more money. And so what you do is you grab the whole head like this and with a slice of a sharp knife you have you know you put it in your container and it's all babies. And there are lots of advantages to it. You know number 1 being the fact that you don't have to deal with the whole wheat situation because you're planting them far enough apart that you can cultivate a with a hoe. Number 2 because you can have have them spend half their life inside. Your greenhouse and you're growing transplant you can just you know keep the production going. Number 3 they're there Hardy year then baby lettuce if you've ever grown baby lettuce it's very fragile. And this lettuce is not so fragile it's actually very flavorful it's it's kind of taken over the baby lead as business and market gardening. Unfortunately it has a. They call it. So these are. You can see what the head looks like and then you can see the individual leaves. 8 different varieties these are what is called. I don't want to look they you know it's like a plant that you're not supposed to reproduce the which is unfortunate but. They call it something different in the state but I think it is the same idea. There are other companies that are beginning to come up with varieties with thing growth. But anyway this is really revolutionized growing baby you lead a. Pelleted seed if you're transplanting Now obviously if you're direct seeding. You use so many seeds that you would never want to pay for color I see that. Seed is is has a clay coating on it and it's also usually priming which that is as I understand it it means that is partially. How the seed number 1 is so much faster to see you know if you can just get a handful and just you know see a tree really really quickly if you have any kind of backing. Peter to see that it's much easier because legacy does you know. So I only use palace I see now it is worth it's a little more expensive but. Your time is money. Quick and easy to harness your heavier more loft in baby lettuce so these are all reasons why we have gone to Sally Nova. I realize I'm rushing through these. Because we're running out of time. I guess we're going to have to do is just if you have more questions on this we'll see if we have time in our rap sheet to go into a little more depth. And again any of these are going to give you a lot more information on how they do things. So you have a choice with spin it as you can either see that intensively with something like this and usually it's only good for 1. Because. You end up having a lot of leaves in half or something you know like when you're coming like this is the way he's been intros and so her 1st follow up cats and less your market you know if it's for cooking or your market is not really picky you can get away with multiple cuts but the 1st press going to be the only 1 that has really pretty neat so you can either do it that way or the way we do it in the wintertime is we transplant it for seeds we use soil walks do you do any of you know about soil water rather than. Say. If you've read all the Coleman or any of these you learn about actually very few. Market gardeners use oil while it's kind of the purest. Ones that do it you know because anyone will agree it's the best that grows the healthiest transplants but it's not as. Efficient as using what we call plug trays. Anyway so it will cook for seeds in a block and plant 3 or 4 rows per head and then we just harvest individual. Which is very labor intensive but you can get pretty fast that you can. Or you think a little knife you know 1 hand. Thing but the advantage of that is the same plant will produce all winter long we can harvest them every couple week and your overall a deal. Is really high. And are running the numbers is profitable even the very labor intensive. Spinach is a heavy feeder means extra truthteller the especially if you're keeping it for a long period of time spin it does not like hot weather all you go down very quickly and whether we try to harvest the leaves without the stans. It makes a nicer and product growing turnips and radishes So most people when they think of turnips think of big and. Purple and white. Is not considered is in many cultures it's considered. Or 3 how. We're talking about a particular kind of white me. That are so. We just encourage our customers. To. The particular variety we prefer. Here's a picture here. Pictures better. That our. Customers. If they're grown right they're really beautiful. And they will change people's opinion about turn. We Seed. Radishes usually 5 turn it. Turnips. That you can transplant in the. Radishes we never change. Now 1 challenge which. Is Again I don't know all. But I was surprised being these how. Were you were we. You have to leave beetle. Little black. Hole. There's a flea beetle then there's also a cabbage root maggot. That will really differ. Turn. Where you want to. And so we always covered them with. Cover or. Having. Something to keep insects. Otherwise they they can really. Do some damage on the plant. Now with root crops I think you understand that. If you leave the leaves on the root crop if you leave. You have to be very careful. Or those leads are going to draw them waste your. Route and you'll end up with things bungee and good so ideally you just how you bunch. He turned out or radishes and just cut. Above the rubber band. So that you're not losing all that moisture through chance 3. So that's 1 way to do it but if you're running a C.S.A. or something where you're trying to fill a box of produce it's kind of nice to have the leaves on because. That or the block and something well of course turning green. Turning Green here. You know. Now. This Harker right turn has carelessly you know love to turn. The heat but. In the south right as a big thing turn. Just like you would. Really. Enjoy OK. Yeah well the reality is there are very few TOCs that you can't eat. We care. What. You can my wife is. Whether. You can find recipes for use in here. Don't throw them away they're. Really good OK be true we actually transplant all or eat that probably surprising to many people. But. Beats. Can be very fitting. You know I there it looks like you have a good chance in a few days later you go out and. Do things here and there they seem to be critical of the susceptible damping. You know what I mean when I say damping. Plants. It's a rot that gets in the base of the plant for oil so. We do better with transplanting we put to sea most of you probably know that Pete. Often has 1. Chart. I remember to turn. My head. They have multiple seeds or. So we put 2 seeds in try to shoot for plant per walk. And what they'll do as they grow they just push each other. And you get life. And the advantage of doing that obviously you're getting plants. You're taking. Back my. Self so it's cheaper but it's also less Trant planting and easier cultivation because you can cultivate between them rather than. When you have. OK we've run out of time we usually so they're good size beat 3 in a bottle to $99.00. We'd like to sell them with the toxins much upon you do we beat the Green Yeah those are really good. And then as the season goes a long time they tend to get these spots on the news you know what I'm talking about I know you have here because with us. And so at some point when the leaves are no longer marketable we just start cutting. And then you can store them if you have a cooler you can store them for weeks. And just sell them as the route. OK. Honey. Can take a few minutes of your. So carrots big big crop. And some of these. You know most of these growers are north of us and they could literally grow carrots. Here. We grow them for 9 months of the year we don't try. We can but the quality goes down and we really really trying to sell in here your quality produce we want to take or. Produce But obviously if you're going to have a nice carrot you need to have really deep soil and that's where the. Rod work. To keep your soil. Deep enough that you're getting it in nice here. But the other big. With care is having a week. Ahead carrots are slow roll overs they don't compete well. Tell you I speak from experience. If you get if you look at the we get ahead of you when you're here. You're just telling him If you just lost any money you were giving me so there are some tricks there we'll talk about there is this is where flame leaders really come into play and a lot of people. Just here. Basically it's propane torch. You look at the. Germinate get up and then you just run that over and it just just toast. Isn't fun it's it's bordering on fine and scary that it brings up too many too many images of World War 2 flame thrower kind of you know. But no it is it is fun it's you feel a lot of power. Sounds like a jet engine you know. I'll try to maybe with a little help we can. Get some video because my son has just come out with a new new flame we did hear that. Truffles. Yeah yeah you have to be careful with flame Wieters you also don't like want to use them around the edges of your house because it doesn't make swell with plaster. Again I don't know how it is here with pelletised seed you know Eliot Coleman was kind of encouraging pelletised seed but I started seeing that I felt like it didn't get same germination with it and there are other growers now who are saying the same thing stay away from pellets I hear. It doesn't seem. To Germany as well. And you know how many rows per bed you do we often do up to 12 rows per bed here as you know we found most of our customers don't like the really big here you know they tend to get a little bit top and stuff so ideally we shoot for something about this long and you know maybe that big around they're more tender and. I just wish I could give you some of our winter care. And then I can talk about taking advantage of cold weather to sweeten carrots we've talked about large pots for tomatoes so what that means is we pot them out twice we grow them in small blocks on a map so they'll Germany and then we pot them up to a 2 inch block. And then we pop them up to a 6 inch pot so like they say our tomato plants are about this big super star to help. Put them in the ground. We use a potting mix now I realize that you are I think most of the peat mosse comes from Canada or the very northern United States and so all our potting mix is are our peat based. I don't know what's available here I saw a rod had a potting mix but I didn't get a chance to look at what it was made. You might you know in this part of the world you're closer to the Pacific Island there. Or call it growing up. And it's supposed to work well the key with tomatoes is trying to figure out what your market wants. You know the reality is in the US most people want to read tomato red to me though about this big because that's what they get at the group you store that they know. A lot of the heirlooms can be huge. Really big and often. And usually shaped people who you know with their. Older stuff well buy those because they know heirloom tomatoes are usually more flavorful certainly more colorful. No point in growing them if you don't have a market for them. All know we put them in the ground we don't grow anything in pots just because we don't like the room it's too much work in my mind the plate you have to play God to figure out what that plant needs whereas when you put it in the ground. Nature and God does its thing. OK consider growing under cover using greenhouses varieties there are certain varieties of tomatoes that have been bred for indoors and they're super productive to perv. They continue to to appear even in hot weather which is the challenge with tomatoes when the temperature gets too warm 90 degrees Fahrenheit so what is that 37 great. Approximately. They start they start. Date all hall in a in here. That some of these varieties will keep going. And.
