Imagine meeting someone who says I don't need a law I don't believe in the law I take a couple steps backward from that kind of person on this. Earth. Coming to you from Silver Spring Maryland welcome to. The Bible based conversation. Contemporary. Thought provoking. Here's your host Justin within. You guys you're watching inversed My name is Justin Kim and in our inverse studio we have Jonathan Kalyan Siku with us we're looking at the topic of the covenants spend about 7 weeks looking at different aspects of the old and new comments of the Old and New Covenant responses and experiences and all the contracts and a lot of these words are kind of like up there if you're not familiar with them one encourage to go to inverse Bible dot org There you'll find in verse Bible study guides and you can study each of these components in your own time at your own pace if you want to look at past episodes you can go to hope hope t.v. and verse and you can see past episodes there as well so Hello everyone. Very good to see you and are so happy to see you in your in your best yes we are on the extra No we are all shot. By the inside we will tell you need. We are. Going to go to Romans Chapter 6 and we will look at how we are actually dead people inside who are trying to pretend to be alive and this is not working that they are going to have a word of prayer and we're going to go to the text Ok let's go to Romans Chapter 6 verses one through 23 we'll take it slower and see if you can pray for us. This play loving Father thank You for the gift of you would thank you for the opportunity to study it thank you for the promise of the Holy Spirit who can enlighten all minds help us to understand these deep truths that we may come to a clearer knowledge of you and that that. Knowledge of you would transform We pray that your blessing will be during this time in your name we pray amen amen amen. Johnson I want to ask you I mean we've talked a lot of theological terms a lot of this like like kind of church language ology language and what has all this discussion what does it really revealed about yourself I mean I kind of joke around that we are these evil people on the inside and on the outside but joking aside what has what deeper insight insights have you gained about yourself to study and notice the very good question as an analyst my life and you know when before Jesus after Jesus and all those things before Jesus there is this really so it's a self deception we're living retrying to figure out the mess that we're in we're trying to deal with it in our own way and that's exactly the problem that's the old covenant experience I'm trying to do things in my own way I've noticed that I definitely did for a large portion of my life and when Jesus came into my life when I you know he offered that he can deal with all these issues and I I saw how amazing he is that Ok you know please do it how things got better this is very simplistic simplified but the covenant study in the covenants really you know uses this theological language to express those realities that's not something I notice you know to offer it for ya logy kind of like there yeah right and down here we've got issues then and this is why t.v. show talk shows like Oprah and Dr Phil and Dr you know. They they all deal with everyday issues they may deal with in very human ways and if you will maybe even in Old Covenant ways to deal with Old Covenant problems you know just try harder use more of this and use these techniques and there are some of them are efficacious but at the end they all have their limitations and they all have to come. To the foot after say another and the over the same problem yeah it was just the symptoms not the root and for me it just makes I realize that the shining if they want to keep on the outside it's more of an indication of my shyness on the inside and before you judge me we're all like that yeah so we're all in this boat together so let's go to Rome Chapter 6 1st one and the callee if you can read verse one for us yes what shall we say that so we continue and send that grace may abound certainly not how so we who died to save and live any longer in it or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death therefore we were buried with him through baptism and to death that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we also should walk in newness of life for if we have been united together in the likeness of his death certainly we also shall be in the likeness of his resurrection knowing this that our old man was crucified with him that the body of said might be done away with that we should no longer be slaves of said for he who has died has been freed from sent the stop there and maybe paused again we are in Paul we are in the book of Romans there is a lot of density here and realize for future episodes and for past when you do when we slow things down it makes a little bit more clear so when verses one through so that we just read Siku What are some insights that you see from those passages. That I notice is he is coming from Paul is coming from having talked about the wonderful grace of God you know what God does for us in Jesus Christ what he makes available to us and the temptation can be the temptation his time in dealing with here is in light of what Jesus has done then you know if I send I just repent. Events in a pen and Jesus always forgive me because he's got this abundant grace and you know Grace Mora balms which means. I can sin more and I'll have little grace and you think that's that's actually a delusion Yeah you're wrong in thinking that ways like so shall we say that Grace me about and the answer is No actually what happens is when we experience grace it does something in us that we no longer want to live a life of sin so now he's 60 he goes into explaining kind of kind of mechanics of what that experience is like you know leaving that life of sin behind and I'll be living a graceful life. And just the analogy that comes to my mind is so think about if you're you're in prison right and you're shackled and God gives the grace that's the defined set and then God comes and he frees you and like great but I want to go back there and then you could rescue me over and over again like you never experience the freedom you missed the whole point of him taking you out there in the 1st place and that kind of foolishness like thanks for the freedom and I go back in the present that's how foolish it is to have that mentality of let me just keep sending more grace like you you misunderstand what said Does to You must understand that it's literally shocked when yourself again yeah there are some people who in their spiritual experience that's this is this is exactly what you describe I soon the only reason why they go to church is to to undo their sin and they go back and then they go soon yes and then there are perhaps institutions and religious organizations that really profit off of soon you know the more you saying we can take care of it we can't solve the problem for you we can make you feel better for a little while but go out there and go out there again and come back and kind of like a 711 for for sin temporary relief what is the Roman 6 is not talking about the no no so Paul really wants to make that point clear and what does he do he goes to the life of Jesus looks here in verse 3 of Romans 6 he says or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized. In Christ Jesus I mean those who make a decision to surrender to Jesus they were Baptist into his death therefore verse 4 we were buried with him through baptism into death Ok so let's stop right there Paul is saying when we were bird with Jesus you know in baptism symbolically our old life the life of trying to fix it myself the life of you know sinning trying to return and sinning again and not having victory all that died with Jesus when Jesus died. Because of his death we can put that on him he takes all the curses all the stuff and how does he continue in verse 4 just this crisis of race from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we also should walk in the newness of life and you know the life is the life of grace the lies the life of where through grace we receive the Holy Spirit we receive power and Jesus lives in us his life of righteousness and holiness and all the things a lot of image of baptism here and so there is the actual act of baptism where people are actually submerged underneath the water and they come out that may be a public ceremony and a public event happens in real water but that spiritual spiritual event happens every single morning write every single day it start really to refresh and we need to be baptized in Christ we need to die in Christ and be resurrected with Christ in me live with Christ Christ in me is to live yet to die but to die. You know I sing that song in the morning and I need to sing it more because. The words I just keep on going let's keep on going shall we go in verse 8 on words Kelly Oh I guess. I don't want you to. Just I think an important point in verse 6 or 6. That knowing this that our old man was crucified with him that the body of sin might be done away that we shall no longer be. Burned I think that's that's crucial in this death explaining it. What it means to die right it means that I'm not a slave to sin anymore and this was his conscious thing is the life that I was living before I was a slave to sin. Everything that my body told me to do I did because I had no power within me to resist those temptations I was a flavor to a certain type of life but now when he talks about being resurrected in the newness of life in verse for this new experience that I have now I have freedom now I can say no to those things because Christ gives me the ability to say no to those things that I don't want to that's the contrast and one wonderful news that we can be free from the slavery of soon I may sound very very cliche Christian Christian lingo but that's sinful thoughts than the thoughts in the mind of maybe chemical addictions that can be entertaining it could be bad relationships it could be all sorts that carries a very very very broad but it's all inclusive of that so we talk about covenants that I just want to emphasize what she's saying. To be a slave to sin to be a slave to me dealing with all these things that's what it means to have an old covenant experience Ok and the new covenant experience is to to be freed from that to have freedom in Christ and now the freedom and the power of Christ in me performing you know in a prom but doing his will and his work so that's what it means to have an old and new covenant experience and it's very important that we understand that because that's what Paul is talking about here and even even in Chapter 7 in very good very good Kelly verse 78 over say please now if we died with Christ we believe that we should also live with him knowing that Christ having been raised from the dead dies no more deaths no longer has to many an over him for the death that he died he died to send once for all but the life that he lives he lives to God Likewise you also reckon yourself to be dead indeed to send but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord therefore do not. Let cinema reign in your mortal body that you should obey it it in its loss and do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to send the present yourselves to God as being a life from the dead and your members as instruments of righteousness to God for essential not have dominion over you for you are not under law but under grace. There in the good good place to pause and when we come back after the break we're going to look at how do those this body of sin how does that affect me and how do I overcome it by Christ's righteousness and his grace so stay with us. In this been a blessing to you Do you have questions or comments or feedback you'd like to leave us find us on social media by searching. Welcome back we're in Romans Chapter 6 and we just read a passage about this this body of sin this body of you know. I heard a sermon once a pastor was talking about one of the Roman ways to torture someone was not only the crucifix crucifix was a horrible way to die probably not the most horrible way to die which our Lord and Savior was crucified but the other way it was that they would to they would strip the clothes off of a prisoner and they would take a dead body of a former prisoner and place them on top of you and attach from hand to hand arm to arm you know chest to chest leg to leg cheek to cheek and you'd be suspended with chains with the dead body hanging on you now not only you have this stench going on as this you know this gang zombie is like on you but after a while all the bacteria starts. Being transferred over to you as a living prisoner and so here you are you are alive but your day. Dying while living that's terror and eventually becomes a part of you and it's very difficult to even if you were to be free to just have this you know. You know it all there and so that a lot of that imagery is found here in this passage and afterward and the. And then when Paul says Who shall deliver me from this body of death I mean there may be that he's thinking of that and rather than just kind of a surgical all in the exact incision even if it were exact You still have remnants and they still have dead some part of you has died here you see it told all transformation that not only does this body die but you you die both of you die in Christ and there is a toehold all new recreate and reconstruction in the resurrection there's a lot of reason there and then and in comes out and rebirth. And so here in verse after this experience do not let sin reign in your mortal body nor should you obey in the last there of a lot of this imagery is very a lot a lot of vivid visual allegory going on you know the one we give a life to. We are freed from the slavery of Sam However there is still we're still living in this side of heaven and there is still the potential you know to to to fall and so on and it happens right but what Paul is trying to say here is change the direction as you walk with Jesus make a conscious decision through his strength you know do not let the sin reign in your mortal body you have a choice verse 13 do not present your members this instrument of unrighteousness So he's saying you have a choice yes you can choose to still sin but he said earlier you know should we sin that grace may have on the Nobel new you choose to follow Christ you choose to let him live in your life if you don't sin will reign in your body again you know if you can come back but that is why that continual decision to follow Jesus and trusting in Him is important. But we do we have understood you know. That our decision to follow Jesus he covers us with his righteousness and and Jesus works with us he understands our weaknesses but he's going to help us as we're going to see they drown in chapter 7 you know that's Victory in Jesus to pray through the Holy Spirit etc etc So this is something we can remind It's a decision we have to make every day and I think that's a very important practical point in terms of our Christian experience you know in verse 11 just to go back one verse before from the one you read us 11 Likewise you also reckon yourselves to be. This is about an attitude the perspective that you have now you're like Ok that was me that's not me anymore and what Jesus has done you know in me making a decision to give my life to him he's now given me the ability to even make that decision to be like that's that's not who I choose to be any longer I choose Christ raid and it's a daily experience of I feel I'm being pulled in this direction I reckon myself I consider myself I have made the choice that this is the person that I want to be I want to be like Jesus not that and that constant decision of choosing Christ every day that's I mean that's the Christian struggle you know but it's a struggle that we have won because we know that user has won and ultimately his goal is to bring us to the place where you know in the glorification like where that will be God but for now while we're on this earth we still have to deal with that being a temptation you know I don't reckon you're so as to be dead I mean when you. Hear you temptation in the Old Covenant we experience we have thinking it was like well the Bible says reckon yourselves to be dead so here's this temptation Well I'm dead I'm dead I'm dead I'm dead I. Can't do it I can't do it I'm going to do it and the more you focus and honing in on this whatever the so you can fill in the blanks what this could be. These could be you know chocolate alcohol whatever whatever you know Rice has it whatever it is you know and used to I can't I can't I can't I can't I can't and you say you know for a dead person Rice has no effect on the dead person but for someone to dictate to ryse the person is going to salivate But the more you focus on even you may even read this Bible verse over and over and you may meditate or reckon reckon reckon reckon reckon reckon reckon reckon it's become stronger and stronger and stronger and old covenant people they know the Bible people they know the temptation old company experiences they know that this is wrong right but that little calibration over to the other side a new kind of new covenant is like you know what this isn't my struggle. My struggle is to keep my eyes in Jesus and that's and that's what it says you know and focusing on Jesus allows for whatever and this just becomes an insignificant pen afterwards that's very powerful illustration verse 11 it says you know you reckon yourself to be dead indeed to sin but alive to God in Christ a new covenant experience really you change your focus instead of focusing I shouldn't do all these things and I shouldn't sin and this and this you focus on what does jesus want me to do you know oh he told me I should take care of the poor I should you know reach out to the people who are struggling we tell you know with the Gospel there's so many things we are called to do and when you focus on selfless behavior when you focus on what Jesus is calling life that he's calling to live you going to forget about that you're going to going to have time to consider it as you're going to be dead to that because you're a life to Jesus you're living for Jesus you're not just focusing on like the temptation is right there schema strength to know you are too busy to even see the temptation but I would also go one step further and it's not that Jesus makes you so busy that you don't see this but there is that that comes through in it but there is a transformation that takes place in the midst of what Jesus is trying to do that all of a sudden this. Pen which so I could not say no to after a while just like you know it's just the pen what's the big deal because there's a joy is a way and that's where your rights are you know Hala Louis is in the Pentecostalism so. You know it's very true because as you engage in this and the things that Jesus is calling to be alive in you distress mission takes place and you experience the joy of true life that's what you were designed for originally right and then the old things that used to be so tempting like worthless like this is nothing compared to how amazing my life and that's where a lot of Christian do they see Christians who have that amazing experience like how can I get it how can I get it the truth is it's very easy Paul is telling us you know focus on crisis or rendered to Christ and you will have that experience and only We've got to move on but. Me on the outside like on the outside it may look different. The Old Covenant experience may look like you're a Christian and you're doing doing all the right things but at the end of the dates actually the same as a heathen who doesn't know God because your focus is on the exact same right and the difference becomes when you focus turns to Christ as you know not only does it present a very profound point you have bad people you know people who don't know about Jesus and yet people who know about God and trying to do all this because their own strength really is they're all in the same boat together they're the same package and this is the irony that there are people like you know I go to church I believe in God and I'm a really good person they are in a sense they're almost desensitized to the new covenant experience and you say yeah it's really easy just like the Pharisees and just like that it will hurt people and I say that with a lower case the lower case. Sometimes it's hard there's a veil over their minds and then they're hanging out with Hagar and there's Ishmael's all around them keep on going keep on going verse 15 verse 15 and we're using a lot of allegories and later stuff to verse 15. If you can reverse 15 for us what then shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace certainly not do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey you are that one slaves to whom you will be whether arson leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness but God be thanked that though you were slaves listen yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered and having been set free from sin you became slaves to righteousness I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh for just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanliness and of lawlessness leading to more lawless lawlessness so now present your members as slaves of righteousness will holiness for when you were slaves of sin you were free in regard to righteousness What fruit do you did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed for the end of those things is death but now having been set free from sin and having become slaves of God You have your fruit to holiness and the end everlasting life for the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus Ok So break this down for us because you know Paul Paul he said to him Paul Paul Paul Paul Paul. Paul so. He likes to you know take a concept or a story and use it as an allegory or as an illustration of how he takes to the concept of slavery and he says I speak in human terms so bear with me he's trying to say yeah but he's a slave you know whatever master you have you do what the Master is telling your and so he's saying you have a choice you are either a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness sin that's and that you are automatically have to send your best to your you know that's how you are but when Jesus when you to when you pick Jesus as your master you become a slave to righteousness because that will be done that. If you you know if he's in your life now you know when we hear the word slave we have triggers all kinds of images in our mind and sounds like all Jesus is out of. With a weapon he's just no no no this is a decision of I serve Jesus now on exactly who is my master now the question and I love how he appeals so he presents both You're here to options and he's like just in case you don't realize how easy of a decision the should be in verse 21 verse 24 when you were slaves ascend you were free regard to write to us 1st 21 sorry what fruit did you have then and the things of which you are now ashamed for the end of those things as death but now have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God you have your fruit to holiness and the end everlasting life is like even if you take these like this any of the a decision why would you ever choose like you are ashamed of the things that used to do so why would you be like well I have 2 masters I might consider the 1st one like you but that's an idiotic decision focus here and if we think about our own lives right you think about the times that you were in a Christian you didn't know God like you I'm ashamed of those times in my life not like Man those were good times we should go back when I had fun back in the sinful like that's not how the mind works is like those it was you're ashamed of what you did and it was complete suffering and death that it led to anyways because sinful pleasure at last for a moment but be slaves of freezing that analogy being fully obedient and surrendering to God is not only good at the moment but it leads to goodness and actual pleasure that lasts longer than a moment yeah maybe you've been looking at the law and you've been looking at God's righteousness and you're thinking how can I keep this by myself or you may be thinking I've been done actually a pretty good job of keeping this by myself and what Paul says is this is all wrong. And this is all you're dead you're dead in your sins. From this our conversation here today my takeaway is this is that we need to be empowered by grace and with that grace we start fulfilling the law in our lives we cannot keep the law by ourselves we need grace so if someone says I don't need the law I don't need in this I'm doing a good job by myself you probably want to step back a little bit because you don't know what you're going to do next the our prayer is let's live by grace under the power of Jesus Christ flowing through us through acts of righteousness coming out naturally in our minds thinking thoughts and in our hearts and in our actions God bless you guys this is our prayer hopefully you guys have been blessed while you're watching in our study on the topic of the covenant we will see you next week when we look at Romans Chapter 7 and looking at the role of the law and the role of people trying to keep the law by their own strength and those keeping the law by God straight you won't want to miss it will see you next week here on in verse God bless you guys.
