Romans 7 - Freedom from the Law

Chester Clark III

One of the more perplexing passages of the Book of Romans is unsurprisingly also one of the most discussed and debated – the seventh chapter. Paul’s distraught testimony of doing what he didn’t want to do and finding himself unable to do what he wanted has resonated with many Christians. But is this God’s ultimate will for our lives? In this sermon Pastor Clark explores Romans 7 in the context of Romans 6 and 8, and uncovers the promises of victory in Jesus hidden in this passage.

This is another in our series on the Book of Romans (chapter 7).

anyone looking in one of the chapters is not my favorite chapter were to be looking in Chapter seven you might ask why then did we read a passage from chapter eight because were going to look at the context of Romans six through eight to be able to understand some passages in Romans chapter seven I believe I believe you also would agree with me on this but all Scripture is given by inspiration of God amen and is profitable for doctrine for reproof for correction for instruction in righteousness so I believe that God is wanted to just speak to us through his Word today and as we open the word of God I'm just going to ask if you would indulge me another word of prayers and begin father in heaven today we just need your spirit we need your spirit to speak to our hearts we need you not because we need a deeper theological understanding but because we needed closer experience with you we want that we want to understand more how we can walk with you as a result of our time together we ask for this miracle of divine understanding of spiritual minds in the name of Jesus let's just get some idea of what I'm talking about here people put me in Romans chapter seven were going to look at just a few verses halfway through the chapter beginning in verse fourteen look at me they are promised after sending you to see why we have some of the challenges in Romans chapter seven that that we do for it we know that the law is spiritual but I am carnal sold under sin for that which I do I allow not for what I would that do I not but what I hate that unit Gallup poll saying is talking is starting the experience of every person about this time of year who has made New Year's resolutions to eat less right to go on a diet but I wanted to I'm doing what I don't want to do what I do never felt that way before the problem is when I hear talking about some New Year's resolution Pauline context is talking about God 's line about infinitely more important in spiritual terms internal terms than something that I simply want to do with my life as I we agreed on that he's talking about God 's law God 's spiritual requirements and skip down to verse verses eighteen for I know that in me that is in my flesh dwells no good thing for to will is present with me but how to perform that which is good I find not for the good that I would I do not mean evil but I would not that I do now if it ideas that I would not is no more either do it but sin which dwells in me he's feeling conflicted here he's feeling porn between what he wants including LLC has good motives he knows he has good intentions but why can't he do what he wants to do is not as if he has a heart that is a contrary or averse to the things of God he says I then verse twenty one I find than a law that when I would do good evil is present with me for I delight in the log on at inward man but I see another law in my members warring against the law of my mind and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members O wretched man that I am who shall deliver me from the body of this that now this is not exactly a glowing testimony of a Christian experience of all giving is is not saying the Christian life is such a wonderful life I'm so blessed to live for Jesus I thought we sang you think all wretched man that I am I'm in bondage am in captivity will what are you talking about Paul what are you trying to say here are some of the load and look at this passage in a safe Paul talking about the Christian experience this is what everyone is bound to experience because I knew Paul experience that than who what hope do I have to do any better than Paul were going to try to look at the context here and try to understand some of what Paul is saying here because I think my family come to the end of our study here this morning you're going to agree with me that Jesus has something better than this to offer us yes something better than this to offer us and so we see this context we see this context of Romans chapter seven it's bound the two bookends are Romans chapter six in Romans chapter rates were going to be looking here briefly at Romans chapter six we party look some of that passage but were going to review a little bit today now let's just remind ourselves that the chapter divisions in the Bible are not inspired God didn't our though the prophets did not write okay chapter six anybody write letters like that weighs in on the middle of your e-mail you say okay now this is the next chapter now we don't like that when you needed it Paul in fact it was the Archbishop of Canterbury Stephen Langton who gave the divisions of the Bible that are still used today in that was in the early thirteenth century but the Bible is divided into chapters and verses came somewhat later Robert Stevens and his fifteen fifty one edition of the Bible gave a great number of his big Bible be the numbering of the verses which is mostly still followed in our English Bibles today so when we look back around the chat rooms after six were not really doing anything that the violence of the text were looking at the context of chapter seven itself is with me there's a couple of themes that we find in Romans chapter six Romans chapter six we look back and remember the first part of the chapter it talks about the next her death and burial and the use of baptism and authentic at least in this object lesson of the old man our old person whenever that is dying and being very good like Jesus died and was buried and just like Jesus rose again again out of the grave we also are resurrected by the same power in the same spirit which is a miracle and to walk in newness of life that the first part of Romans chapter six of me a few verses later verse fourteen notice with me Paul says in Romans chapter six verse fourteen for sin shall not have dominion over you for you are not under the law but under what grace and other some people read that any shopping they say see we no longer have to keep the law we don't have to worry about sin we can send as much as we do is we want as long as we have graced the cover us were okay but after thinking of some but what does Paul say immediately it was a premeditated and some wouldn't have this reaction wonder they read verse fourteen and he says in verse fifteen what then shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace God forbade using what Paul's trying to say is not that the law is no longer relevant for the Christian were to talk more about how it's relevant he thought unassailable laws not relevant what he sang the law for the Christian is no longer condemning us were no longer condemned by that law because of the grace of Jesus get down to verse twenty four when you were the servants of sin you were free from righteousness what fruit had ye then in those things where you are now ashamed for the end of those things is that the wages of sin is death he said that the more plainly the fruit of sin is death that's what Paul talks about nowhere to keep that in mind because he brings us back to this hi Ms. Merson with his discussion in Romans chapter seven or other contacts we could find in order this book in this bike reading Romans chapter eight in verse one but we argument that the Scriptures will come to that here in just a little while first of all let's look at the law and how it's used in Romans chapter seven beginning with verse one know you not rather than price feature those who know the law how the law has dominion over man as long as he lives and then he gives an object lesson illustrations in verses two through four for the woman which has an husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as we read this if the husband is dead she is loose from the whopper has been so than if while her husband lives she's married to another man she's called adulterous but if her husband be dead she is free from that loss of that she is no longer an adulteress though she be married another man you fell upon thing is not for anything the subject is trying to use an illustration this is something that they know they understood the Jewish lobby understand as I speak of those who will alright and he says you know that if a person makes a vow to be married to person as long as they should live then there bound about how long they lived but as if that spouse dies they are no longer under that covenant right they are free to be married to another person you understand this you understand this was all bringing this up what he's trying to help us understand this idea of our old man being dead room as we talked about Romans six our old man is crucified with Christ is dead and buried we rise the walk in newness of life when we were in the flesh when we were doing the things of the flesh when we are married if you want to please you please to our old man we were bound to obey him but if that old man is crucified guess what we're reading to be married and who was it that we are married to that old man is crucified we become married to none other than Jesus amazing and wonderful intimate relationship that Jesus wants to have with us but you can't serve two masters you can't be married to the old man I'm still trying to serve Christ and the problem that many Christians face is that they want to be married to Christ and all other good guess that that his love brings to them they'd they want to be following Christ they want to be married but they aren't willing to part ways with the old man and how many government their wedding where he has been doing that where a file read something like this and for seeking all others except me Mary Jane I promise to be married to you soon for the rest of my life never heard about with them like that of restating all others except Jason Andrade I promise to be married you for the rest of my life is that what marriage is about obviously not when we choose to be married we forsake all others for seeking all others is where that phrase in and we are we are going to be married to one person that one person will believe the focus of our tensions are affections are loyalty our trust on our and the problem that many Christians have is they want to be married to Jesus but they haven't yet understood they haven't yet allow the old man to die notice how he develops this theme in Romans chapter seven wherefore my brethren based upon what we just talked about a lot marriage you also have to become dead are become dead to the law the body of Christ then you should be married to another even to him was raised from the dead I see this that we should bring forth fruit unto God member in chapter six he says being out in before while we were in the world that we had fruit that were the fruit to the end of that now he says we need bring forth fruit and God for when we were in the flash the motions of sin which were by the law did work in our hearts in our members to bring forth fruit under that now what you trying to say Polly trying to say that when we're in the flesh means when we have a corporal body when we have physical being that we cannot please God in fact that's that's when he even says in Romans chapter eight and verse verse five for they that are after the flesh do mind things of the flesh inward is a state verse eight Romans at Weber State so then they better in the flesh cannot please God Valley strike the hero is represented when we were in the flesh were still in the flesh aren't any still have hair follicles and fingernails into the goals in all of these aches and pains that we did as we get older you were still in the flesh what he's talking about is when that old man was still alive our car and made sure that's what he is talking about busy contrast Paul began to develop your between being in the flesh and in the spirit following our old man our carnal nature and following the things of God and you'll see that contrast developed especially strongly in chapter eight but now over six we are delivered from the law that being dead wherein we were a hell that we should serve in newness of spirit and not in the oldness of the letter what is Paul trying to get to how was he trying to explain this this this mystery this is what will that he was he was talking about in his own heart where the law convicted him what he should do what he was doing wrong but he couldn't find any victory to do anything differently he's saying here that being delivered from the law are being that being said when we were held we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter Paul you remember had been called soul I saw was a theologian of theologians in the Jewish nation back to the young man he was look at as of right in rising star in the Sanhedrin Sanhedrin you remember was a group of seventy men who were the spiritual leaders of Israel they would have been the civil leaders as well several would know how to do and so these were they respected and revered men of the nation they knew the law of God backwards and forwards in fact they it was a requirement for them to be a member of the Sanhedrin that they would know the entire Jewish code of law by heart Paul was a very educated man he studied under the defeat at the feet of a renowned professor Gamaliel he was he was was very smart very intelligent very bright student and he was a wise man another interesting fact about the Sanhedrin and when they would try somebody whether the over some crime of of the of immorality or of horrible 's teachings when they would try something it was against the rules of the Sanhedrin the internal rules of the Sanhedrin for them to have a translator to translate the testimony of the witness or of the plaintiff in their trial now the Jews were scattered all over and so they came from many different backgrounds but it was a requirement for the witness to be able to testify in their mother tongue in their native language that was so they could have the best attempt at communicating accurately right but the the the Sanhedrin did not allow for translators a translator would introduce the lead opportunity for error in in the translation so it was a requirement that in the courts that the Sanhedrin held all translation had to be done by members of the Sanhedrin themselves not just one but two members of the Sanhedrin had to be fluent in the language that that person was speaking and their mother tongue and this is why one of the reasons why when Paul says in verse twenty seven fourteen I speak more languages are more tongue than the wall he wasn't just he wasn't just boasting idling he actually was extremely gifted linguistically as most of the members of the Sanhedrin were to be a part of the Sanhedrin you have to speak multiple languages even some very secure languages in order to be a fair body and so Paul uses this illustration of of the blood of marriage the marriage law and then he goes on and he uses this illustration of being dead to the law remember his experience his experience was that of making sure that he did everything the law said right member that he was and is a champion of the law he made sure he did everything just right we can read in his epistles he talks about how he was circumcised size on just the right day you would get all the law originally the jewel of the Jews is how he describes himself but he found that keeping the law could not save him and unison keeping the law could not save him at least not in our keeping the law trying to try to do all the externals and to keep all the obedient Commandments all those things it couldn't save him in fact it left him just as empty as he had been before it left him without the peace and the satisfaction that came from knowing his Savior personally noticed with me goes on verse seven chapter seven percent what we say then if the law sin is in the lot bad is lost then got to bed now I had not known sin but the law but by the law bride not known lust except the line said thou shall not covet and send it says were thinking of taking occasion by the commandment wrought in me all matter of concupiscence without the law sin was that if I didn't understand what the lot really meant I felt pretty good but when you a lot began speaking to my heart and when the law began showing me that I was really dirty I was really guilty he says I was alive without the law wants but when the commandment came sin revived and I died never thought of things going well today was going well and you past the mere ever had one of those rude awakenings in the mirror that because it shows you that you forgot to do something or forgot to or your hairs on out of place in the near the fault millimeters not the fault within the areas let me by that feeling of insecurity or remorse or regret or whatever it is in your heart and that's what Paul say the law is not the fault was not the problem though I was doing fine and then I can grace of a single line I realized I'm a sinner even though I've been checking off all the Jewish news and don'ts for all my life under the best places I've attended church I've done all these then all these good things I came to the realization that I was loss I was a sinner because keeping the law can't change my condition any more than a mere can make us clean the command of verse ten which was ordained to life I found to be ended that for sending a kinematic reminiscing menace looming wherefore the law is holy and the commandment holy and Justin were was then that which is good made definitely Doctor Bennett said that it might appear sin working death in me by that which is good that sin by the cat commandment might become exceedingly sinful we need to see our need that's why the law is of benefit for us and then we come to that passage where Paul gives his testimony of this experience wanting to do what was right knowing what was right being convicted about was right of finding himself powerless to do what was right let's just look at the law and Romans chapters unless just noticed that we have the Decalogue quite clearly being referred to he talks about thou shall not covet documenting commandments and what he found from the Decalogue was so good that it pointed out his condition it condemned him show that the fruits of his life or fruit under that not until eternal life and under this discussion of the Decalogue we had a discussion of the law of sin and death notice with me in verse twenty and twenty one he says for I if I did now if I do that which I would not it is no more either that but sin which dwells in me I find than a law that when I would do good evil is present with me is he is confident is going back and forth preferring to write alive in the law got at the inward man but I seem what is your Bible say I see what another law silly talking on the Commandments which are good they point out my evil which is an could is not not comfortable but I see another law in my members warring against the law of my mind and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in mine 's in Romans chapter seven Paul speaks of the ten Commandment law as pointing out his guilt condemning him these base of another law that he refers to the law of sin and death and that is that I Paul can stop myself from singing you could call it the law of our carnal natures you could call it the law of the flesh Paul refers to it in the law is present in my members bringing me into captivity to the law of sin and death and therefore he says oh wretched man that I could shall deliver me from the body of death I'm thankful that he doesn't leave that question unanswered because he comes in chapter eight with some good news team first in verse twenty five is as I think God through our Lord Jesus Christ but in verse eight chapter eight verse one he says there is therefore now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the spirit and in the same and that verse I is thankful that today you and I have the privilege this is abundantly clear no matter how obscure some of the passages in Romans seven may be London's very clear Jesus releases us from the condemnation of sin that is to say that before God and they watching universe we can stand in the blood of Jesus today with out condemnation for rain from the condemnation of sin and the law as if we had never sent isn't that good news I thank God my Lord Jesus Christ Paul says he knows that there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the spirit not as we meet again Uganda boys these verses from chapters six and seven he's talking about this experience of dying in May Mary being in Christ is a close intimate relationship with him the works of the flesh being dad and works of the spirit being alive through the power that raised Jesus from the dead we also walk in newness of life all it does is mean capsulitis is first few verses of chapter eight and he says in verse two for the law of the Spirit of life in Christ he is a new law the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the loss and death on acid question can you be in captivity the law sin and also free to let him a lot sentencing time no Jesus Jesus power makes us free from the law of sin and that and that my friends is good news the law of the freedom of life in Christ Jesus I noticed the pro- proposed eating out a satellite arrange this on the slide here we talk about these four laws I guess you could say here in Romans chapter seven we have a lot married on the Decalogue which points out our sins and can save us but not as here this is a subset of the Decalogue I propose you that when we are trying to save ourselves when we are by the works of our flesh attempting to obey and be good enough Meyer sells the ten Commandments is a law of tyranny it convicts us and condemns us it doesn't help us at all like Paul convicted but not converted convicted but not surrendered we are in in bondage to this law which we know we want to do better we know we want to do something different but we can vaccine law can be implanted into our hearts and become the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus home living let's look and see how the Bible teaches this what we do know we can say something very clearly from Romans Chapter seven Chapter eight we can say very clearly that our natural heart is not inclined to the things of God you remain Romans chapter eight verse seven says it doesn't combine the flesh is enmity against God is not subject to the law about neither indeed can be so then they entered in the flesh cannot please God we also know that Jesus says of my own I felt I can do nothing and of Jesus do nothing by himself and how much can we do in keeping the law nothing I don't think that any of us would would would try to say that we can do more than Jesus in our own strength and there's something else that I want us to be very very very clear that about back I want to turn with me there in Romans chapter out in first John chapter two first John chapter two I want to get to see this promise with me together today I want you to understand that I'm not suggesting that because we struggle therefore we are not Christians because we struggle arena because we fall therefore we are per se can of God I want to understand is very clearly when I talk about Romans Chapter seven I say this conflicted torturous experience of Paul describes here is not what God wants for us I'm not trying to say that everything 's always go our way very easily first John chapter two and verse one Jesus says rep John is writing and I believe this is a message from Jesus that us today my little children these things write I unto you that you send not what is God 's will for us what is he wants us he wants is a victory over those things right because I wanted to continue doing those things we don't want to do we don't intend to do we know that you are going to bring the fruit of the these things already that I you send not any man sin we have an advocate with the father Jesus Christ the righteous are you glad he put those two thoughts together aren't you glad in the Holy Spirit and to say I don't want to listen I would be discouraged you know there's a theology today in the world in the Christian world that says truth is determined by my experience and never heard of that type of thinking I struggled with this is a time in my early ministry where I read the Bible and ice looked at my life and I said the Bible of the Bible says and what my life is no match and what I'm living is it's easy for me to see that as more of a reality than what the Bible says Enon is very real and I realized that choice to me either I could begin to define truth and conform truth in my experience and therefore feel better about myself or had to say maybe I need to live by faith and meeting God 's word holds up a standard that I don't naturally reach you with me on I think most Christians could read the whole develop a word of God holds up a standard I don't naturally of my own self reach then why do we try to redefine truth by our experience it's a very dangerous slippery slope to go down it requires faith to believe that God can do the impossible to catch that it does not require phase for me to believe that I can do what I can do I know I can do certain things and if all my religion is in all my religion can as of all my standard for living is in the thing that I can do by myself what kind of religion and that its religion with no power no faith no miracles and needs it's a religion of know God is asking us as we look in the word of God as we see in is a standard that we can't meet with Barney sale the law perfectly of being alive with Marty Malone it all is soon to come short of the glory of God but God is asking us exercise faith notice is a God everything you where you want me to be that way your village you have to work a miracle in my life all I tell you friends this is where this is where I've struggled my own experience to come to an understanding of what God Watson Howe to share this message of what God wants the good news is that God does not forsake us when we fail him but we need a miracle and not only do we need a miracle God promises a miracle I love this John Janet Reno interchanging Jesus and Nicodemus God promises a new birth why can help I was born this way that's why anyone again we need to be born again from above the power of the spirit being raised to walk in newness of life the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is promised and give us new life a new spiritual life in our religion consists of no power beside that which we possess in ourselves it's a worthless religion God promises a new birth he promises a new Hartford music of chapter thirty six I love this is one of those those passages in the Old Testament that gives the gospel with clarity and its uses language that we can all understand and help us understand Romans chapter seven and eight as as I'm sure Paul was familiar with it I just love how how it's all expressed your Romans and easy to jump to thirty six in verse twenty five notice the promise that God makes to his people Ezekiel chapter thirty six over twenty five then will I sprinkle clean water upon you and you will be clean from all your filthiness and from all your idols will I cleanse you a new heart also will I give you a new spirit will I put within you and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh and I will give you a heart of flesh what is going to be the result of having a new heart new birth new covenant experience isn't going to be that we can then send as much as we want is that what happened that were medically noiseless as a verse verse twenty seven and I will put my Spirit within you does that sound miraculous in the spirit able to do something I can do business very high-powered but I don't have yes or no yes I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to delight walk in my statutes usual keep my judgments and do them that the good and is that how the law of condemnation the law of sin and death becomes the law of freedom the loss of life in Christ Jesus in the spirit is put in is when we are raised to walk in newness of life that's the good news that God offers us that's the good news that we can have noticed that they got offers a new birth he offers a new heart a promise as a way of escape advertisement is African in verse thirteen there's no temptation taken you but such as is common to man but God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted above that you are able but will with the temptation also make a way of escape that you may be able to bear it he promises that to a he promises that he was at the rate of birthday to write his law in our hearts to put that in our innermost parts that's the promise of the new covenant in Hebrews chapter eight is repeated again in Hebrews chapter ten old migrants God is not expecting us to live a life of obedience along roads training he's expecting us simply to allow him to put a new heart 's we need a miracle is what we need to see my friends when we think of law we could symbolize a bike chain in fact some of my pictures here I had actually had a chain here in the quarter and we talk about freedom from the law that changed the chain being broken what I would suggest you do sometimes we think of the lost something like this and I suppose that when we are in our unconverted state when we are walking in the flesh this is what God 's law it convinces him behind this were held back by his miserable but you know did you ever stop to think that that same chain that same chain that binds us maybe that wasn't God 's intention for Newton God 's intention for was very very different that same chain not appreciated by a prisoner in Guantánamo Bay could be very very much appreciated in a different context that you think that Cheney can be there to protect us to keep us to save us I don't mean to save us from our sins but to show us the right way to go get Stan how the same law could be a law of sin and death and the same time with the power of God in life the law of life in Christ Jesus I believe it can be gone once long rather to be our delight David said I delight to do your will O my God J your law is written in my heart 's gone wants as long to be underlying something we appreciate protection from the enemy promises for the journey and I hesitate even to share with you some ideas about how you can experience that law of life in Christ Jesus because ultimately when we talk about victory over suddenly talk about having freedom from guilt freedom from the law were each on a spiritual journey in only the Holy Spirit can can teach you what it means for you and I want to encourage each one of you know we can go through life like Paul miserable or we can learn what the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus and I want to encourage you spend some quiet time with God don't depend upon the preacher to tell you what your soul needs Jesus will speak to you about missionaries and with you some basic principles of how to be free from the law of combination and experience the law of liberty the law of life in Christ Jesus would you like to hear couple ideas the first one may surprise you but I think it's by far the most important the first step in experiencing freedom from the law is to stop try that doesn't make sense at all what he needs try I've been trying as hard as I can I haven't been enough to tell me how to try harder you should tell me how to try smarter something my point is brothers and sisters friends of mine today my point is this as long as you are thinking it's something you can do to be better to keep the law to escape from condemnation you'll never escape at all as long as you think you can just try harder to get up earlier you can pray more even stated Bible more you can do all these good things as long as you think of those things are going to bring you you got a problem because freedom does not begin until we give up Guinness now I'm saying I have to come to the point where I say I'm a pastor I've been reading the Bible since I was a kid and I know God 's word I know a lot of good things a lot of theology I've been to seminary but do not have any guy and nothing I does anyone and no matter how hard I try I as long as you're still holding onto hope that you are not somehow things somehow you can you can you can keep the law you can obey Jesus you can do whatever as long as you're still holding onto any help at all not yet surrendered your life and you and I have to come to the point where we say Jesus I give up fact that think we need to do that pretty because the old Man keeps trying to come in and do it again I give as soon as we as long as we're trying to do it on our own strength Jesus does not have the room to work in I live as long as we think were not try harder and do better Jesus doesn't have the opportunity to do what he needs to do in our lives look with me and James chapter four I want to suggest that as we give up it's not so that we give up hope it so that we have hope not in us but we have hope in Jesus being confident of this very thing that he was begun a good work in us will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ that's what we read in Philippians chapter one being confident in Jesus not in the nine Chester look at me James chapter four what we must do in order to have the victory in our experience James chapter four verse seven says for what three six digits for context this beautiful verse but he gives more grace does anyone hear any more grace I do but he gives more grace wherefore he says God resists the proud but gives grace of the humble whole I want to be in that latter category need more grace God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble verse seven four submit yourselves therefore to God resist the devil and he will flee from you draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you cleanse your hands you sinners and purify your hearts you double minded be afflicted and more and we let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to happiness designing a Christian should always be morning enveloping around sad and mournful no notice of me verse ten humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord and he will live he will lift you up at some point friends would not give up realize our need in submit ourselves to Jesus surrender our hearts to Jesus another thing that we can do to help him make this victory in our lives is to spend time in God 's word Psalm one nineteen verse one eleven says Bible word I hate in my heart that I might not sin against you Psalm one nineteen is full of promises about God 's Word and his commandments I like the first few verses of that chapter it says in verse nine where with all our house selling young man cleanse his way by taking heed thereto according to your word you see my friends as we spend time in the word of God it's like Paul says the commandment is revived and we die we see our need for Jesus we see our need for his salvation is in my own experience I found it very easy for me especially by not spending time daily in the word of God is very easy for me to begin that will go I'm going to my life on sort of cruise control talking about every things going okay to not even terrible happened in my life I'm okay after all look around either people who claim the Christians of the worst things in result I actually okay after all I become self satisfied complaints and think that again think that I can do is when I spend time in God 's word and remind standard is superhigh I need grace I need Jesus I can't do it all that's what I need on a daily basis spending time in God 's word for some people you know it's different for some people the morning is easier sometimes it may be evenings easier but we all need to spend time in the word of God spent time in self-examination sector and inserting verse five says examine yourselves whether you be in the faith to paraphrase the rest of the verse it says either Jesus Christ is in you or you are a reprobate or the depraved Robert person will be camping the middle ground is either a miracle happen in your life today for your fine loss right even Jesus is living in my heart today or or is not it's not us make complex things it's either or is one of the other the last point that I want to make is to focus on Jesus New Orleans I've met some people who taught a doctrine of victory over sin who focused primarily on the second and maybe on the victory but it was all looking at myself I'm still trying to find out I could find victory over that struggle that I've been happy and I believe the secret police what I've expressed my life my secret is not to focus on my struggle focus should be on Jesus the focus should be on the one who is able to change my heart because I can't change myself right leopard can't change his spots with your began changes again neither can you work custom to doing evil become accustomed to doing good I can't change my heart I know some who can Jesus can change my heart it's a miracle and as I focus my mind on Jesus as a focus my eyes on Jesus as I spend time believing him believing his work and trying to stay in an unbroken relationship with them allowing him to have room in my heart that is when you can give me the victory that is when he can write his law in my heart and that wall becomes a law spirit of life instead of the law of sin and death and after we've done these five steps what we do we keep doing the experience basic basic understanding of what it means to walk with Jesus walk with him by faith I'm thankful but as we look to Jesus Einstein was the Jesus we see a Savior who is a greater savior than I am I'm thankful that his grace is greater than my send my gilts I'm thankful it is power is greater than my weakness his strength is stronger than my habits his strength is sufficient segment is chapter twelve verse nine Jesus said to Paul my grace is sufficient for the form my strength is made perfect in weakness or do love that Doctor Lamar Jesus because you don't have to be a strong Christian young NBA we Christian for my strength the new because only when you realize your weakness and my string have any good effect my strength is made perfect in weakness most gladly Paul says I will rather glory glory in my infirmities the power of Christ may rest upon me but these lovers thirteen says I can do all things how many things I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me June first twenty four twenty five now unto him that is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy to the only wise God our Savior be glory and majesty dominion and power both now and forever amen first John Ford verse four you are not little children have overcome them because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world these amen Jesus has the power that we don't have the heart of the grace and the strength that we don't have Ephesians three verses nineteen to twenty one and you know the love of Christ passes knowledge that you might be filled with all the fullness of God now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages world without end amen unto him that is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or even think all my friends don't limit my Jesus the son shall make you free you shall be free indeed all I want back don't you I want an experience of freedom from the law when that law is written in my heart 's it will no longer be a shackle that binds but a guide rail to strengthen the guide that is a miracle only Jesus can work and I want that miracle in my heart today how much you anyone here want to join me in saying Jesus I find my life 's too much like the apostle Paul's when he described doing what he wanted doing doing what he didn't want to do I want a life free from the condemnation of the law I want your life to be written in my heart save his ID history for a father in heaven today we missed thank you that we can come to you just as we are will have to make ourselves out to be something were not real happy pretty or sells up before we come to your throne were thankful that the ground is level the foot of the cross but each of us know matter what our background matter what our condition position today we're all in the same condition we kneel at your cross were thankful Lord that your grace is sufficient for our weakness to your strength is made perfect in our weakness that if we think were strong you can't give us your strength that when we realize were weak that's when you can do something oh Lord I pray I pray today that we might all just give up give up trying to do it on her own we might admit defeat we might recognize that only a miracle can save us that miracles to be found in Jesus today father you know each heart you see each one here perhaps if someone struggling with that choice to surrender and submit their life to you to your word I just want to pray to give them victory but your spirit will give them power to rise and walk in newness of life the old man the way we naturally are due in the second be dead and gone so we can be married to you the week at doing you and us and us and you and you can be new creatures and crises him more this is arc 's are praise him we want to success is
