GYC 2025: Seeing the Invisible

So this morning, we are going to study the Bible a little bit together.

So GYC, it started not as this big movement of thousands of people, but it actually started as several young people coming together with a desire to get into the Word of God more and to study it as friends with the deep desire to know more of God and to know more about His Word.

And so of course we as the leadership team, this is something that we love to do not just as the leadership team of GYC but we do it as friends.

Right, yesterday I told you a little bit about some of the things that we like, and as we are sharing about those things, we also love to get into the word of God together, and we would love to invite you to do that with us this morning.

And so, just wanna make a quick note and a caveat before.

We do have some wonderful pastors up here.

I am a humble high school teacher, and I don't have a PhD in the Bible or theology or the chemical composition of manna in the book of Exodus or anything like that.

But I do believe that the Holy Spirit can still teach me.

And I believe the Holy Spirit can teach all of us.

And I believe that as we are studying together, we can see the invisible in what we are studying this morning.

And so, you've had a little bit of a preview of what we're gonna study.

You've seen it actually behind us right here.

And we are going to look specifically this morning at the story of the burning bush.

And so we're gonna be looking at Exodus chapter 3.

So I invite you to turn with me in your Bibles or flip there in your phones to Exodus chapter 3.

And as you turn there I'm going to give a little bit of a rundown of Exodus chapter 1 and 2.

I'm sure most of you already kind of have an idea of what happens but there's this guy his name is Moses but before Moses there are these people called the children of Israel and the children of Israel historically were the people of God and they are in captivity in the land of Egypt And so there's this promise that was made a long time ago that God would surely visit his people and raise up a deliverer and Moses parents know this and so does some other people and at this point in time the Pharaoh is trying to slim down the population of the Hebrews and so Moses parents in faith decide to hide Moses in the basket.

Moses has an adventure through the water and eventually lands at the doorstep of the Pharaoh's daughter who adopts him.

And eventually we see this progression of Moses becoming a leader within the land of Egypt.

And so he thinks in his mind, I'm going to now deliver my people from the land of Egypt.

He goes and he makes an action, kill somebody to protect somebody else, And that action is not, essentially it doesn't turn out the way that he wants it to turn out.

And so now he's on the run, Pharaoh's mad at him, the other people are mad at him, and he finds himself in Midian, and that's where we find ourselves in chapter 3.

So that was a quick spark notes version, a rundown of chapters 1 and 2.

I encourage you to read it for yourself if you want some more context from it as well.

But we are now gonna start reading in chapter 3, and we're gonna go ahead and we're gonna read 1 verse at a time starting in chapter 1.

The executive committee doesn't know where I'm gonna stop them, So we're just gonna read until we reach a point and I will let you guys know when.

So we'll start with Andrew over here, starting in verse 1, and we'll just read 1 verse at a time.

Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, And he led the flock to the backside of the desert and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.

And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire, out of the midst of a bush, and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

Then Moses said, I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush doesn't burn.

So when the Lord saw that, he turned aside to look.

God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, Moses, Moses.

I was so excited that I forgot that we need to pray before we read the Bible.

I was too excited to get into the Bible, but we need to invite the Holy Spirit.

Heavenly Father God, we thank you so much for giving us this time that we can read your word.

Lord, we want you to be here in this moment.

And so, Father, as we read your word and as we read the pages here, may it not just be pages and words in a book, but Lord, may it be the living word of God that has power to change lives and does not come back to you void.

May it bear much fruit in our lives and in our hearts.

And Father, may the soil of our hearts be prepared to receive the seed of your word.

Please teach us about Moses, teach us about the burning bush, teach us about what all these things that are seemingly confusing mean.

And Father, may it not be me teaching, or us teaching, or us sharing just our own thoughts but Lord may it be you speaking through us and to us and teaching us through your Holy Spirit please be with here be with us here help us to fill your presence we praise thank you so much We pray all these things in Jesus name.

Then he said, do not draw near this place.

Take off your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.

Moreover he said, I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.

And the Lord said, I have surely seen the oppression of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.

So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites.

Now therefore behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me.

And I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppressed them.

Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.

I know they don't really look excited, but trust me, we're all super excited.

And we're going to stop there and look at the first 10 verses together.

And, you know, I have a bunch of questions, but you know what, is it okay guys if I just leave it open?

Can I just like ask you guys, what do you guys see in the first 10 verses?

The first thing that jumps out to me is that this is happening on Mount Horeb, which later in the Bible we see with Elijah and also Mount Sinai.

The mount, which is Mount Horeb, which is Mount Sinai, and that mountain actually comes back a little bit later.

So I do have a point that I saw, but I can't get ahead of myself.

I'm the 1 who set the thing, so I gotta stay within 10%.

So thank you for bringing that up, Kelsey.

I guess a point that I can bring up is this great call that Moses is getting.

And I guess what this speaks for me, and I think for any young person here, is the calling that God has for your life.

It may not come after a worship service per se.

It may not even come in the midst of a Bible study.

It may come in the midst of you just doing simple, ordinary things in life.

And I can go so much further, but for now I'll just throw that in there as discussion.

I was going to say, I know that you have so many other things that you could say with that, and I just want to kind of play off of that a little bit.

You know, it's not only that he wasn't in like a very, you know, well he was in a holy place but it's not necessarily that he was in a temple.

In fact, Moses thought that he was supposed to be the deliverer and when he was in Egypt or should I say the University of Egypt and a graduate from there and in the best position that he could be in.

I mean, when you're thinking to deliver a people, I would rather take a top graduate than a guy who is tending sheep in the middle of nowhere, you know?

And so I think that's so encouraging to me too, where in this sense, Moses thinks that he's ready, but obviously he was not at that time.

And Moses comes, or God comes and visits him when he is tending sheep, when he is seemingly in a very normal, kind of unprepared position.

And we'll see a little bit more of how this plays out as we continue reading as well.

I love that, Josh, because when people look at us and in these positions, they only see the position and the title, and they say that, oh, wow, they're up there on the stage and doing all these things.

But I remember back in the day of my first GYC at Baltimore, I was just sitting in 1 of these seats and looking up.

You Don’t Need More Time

Thanks everyone for being on time because we're going to talk about time.

First of all, we're going to go ahead and pray.

Hope you're excited to learn more about managing your time.

Father in heaven, we ask that you be here because we desire to learn more about you.

Even though we're talking about something that involves tactics and and understandings of how to manage the things on this earth.

We still ask that your spirit will guide us, for you know all things and you have wisdom beyond what we could ever think of.

Help us to have a spiritual moment here and not just mentally being educated And maybe enjoy this time together for we know you are here with us in Jesus name we pray amen So you don't need more time that's how we start off this presentation You think you know you think you need more time, but we want to say you might not actually.

I want to start off with asking you a question And there are no wrong answers for this 1.

What are some things that you do that keeps you busy?

Well, I'm gonna look at you and point to you.

Okay, like too many hours or too much tasks.

So I'm assuming that you don't have a 0 inbox.

I was wondering when that's gonna come up.

So let's say, first of all, we talk about this and I put this up because not to boast about what we do but we had to quickly realize that time is not for us for my wife Felicia and I we're Stephen and Felicia if you didn't know that's who we are we're the Lees And so there are some things that I'm responsible of on the left.

And there are some things that she's responsible on the right.

And we have to somehow navigate all this every week somehow.

And you would wonder just job itself is enough for some of you.

And at the same time, you have to do the things at home.

But I believe that as you will learn with our seminar, as you understand more about time and how God wants it, you might be able to do even more without being overwhelmed and being able to navigate things that you thought it was impossible to do and not to stress about it.

Not to stress about all the things you're doing, not being overwhelmed, yeah?

And also being able to respond to messages right away or at a timely manner, yeah?

So that people don't feel that you're ignoring them.

All right, so that's what we're going to talk about.

So there are 2 people, this is a made-up scenario so you understand.

So let's say there are 2 people who come to the throne of God and they're being judged.

1 person used his wealth to buy all the luxury cars that he can afford and design brand clothing.

Alright, 1 person used all his wealth for those things.

The other person spent 15 minutes a day watching useless videos on social media.

Which do you think will be judged more harshly?

Who says the person who wasted 15 minutes?

Well, this is a hypothetical question to make a point.

I want you to know that there's this quote like this of no talent He has given will he require a more strict account than of our time What does that mean It means it's not your wealth If you understand the talents that is listed in christ object lessons chapter 25, There are several talents specifically mentioned there and it's not health.

It's not kindness Which is kind of character it's not kindness it's not money or even how you speak let's say you say something bad mean or even mental faculties which is developing your mind.

Sister White says it is time that God holds stricter account than any of those.

So you have to ask yourself how are we spending our time?

If it is to that degree of importance, How are we spending our time?

If you messed up, wasting so much time in your life, God has a solution.

So we are not coming to you this morning as experts in regards to how we use our time.

So we're coming, we flew from Houston yesterday.

Last week we put on a retreat for single women.

It was a great success, but every morning, we have some of the attendees here every morning it was up early and ending the day late the week before we were presenting at AYP after we leave from here we go to New York and then Pennsylvania and then New Hampshire back home and then California And in the midst of all of this, it's so easy to think because I am doing God's work It's okay if I get to skip on my devotion for this morning and try to catch up whenever I do make it back home And in the midst of our busyness, most of us doing ministry and good works, whatever it is that we're doing, somehow we think that our busyness is going to merit us to God.

That somehow he's going to be impressed by how much we are doing for him, even though we're not spending as much time with him.

So I'm going to be sharing with you a few lessons that I have been learning myself in the midst of so much that I have to do.

In the book of Haggai, however you wish to pronounce it, This is talking about when the exiles were returning back to Jerusalem and the temple needs to be rebuilt but rather than building the temple they are busy building up their own lives and so forth and God sends a message to them.

Now then the Lord of armies says this, consider your ways you have so much only to harvest little, you eat but there is not enough to be satisfied, you drink but you are not filled, You put on clothing but there is not enough for anyone to get warm and the 1 who earns, earns wages to put into a money bag full of holes.

What's happening here is the people they're spending so much time, so much energy investing in their lives and somehow the output is not reflective of the input and God is saying that their Priorities are all mixed up and that's why even though they're doing so much they're not seeing the result that they wish to see.

He said you hoped for a rich harvest but they were poor and when you brought your harvest home I blew it away.

Because my house lies in ruins while all of you are busy building your own fine houses.

While the immediate context of this was talking about the temple, 1 way that we could apply this to is our devotional life.

Let's pray first and we are going to ask a few questions.

Father in heaven, thank you for gathering us here once more.

Lord, today's topic is going to be for some of us uncomfortable.

Maybe it's something that we disdain, not all of us desires to be online.

But we know that Maybe there is something here that we haven't tapped into.

That Adventists who used to be in the forefront of innovation, maybe we have fallen a little bit behind.

It is good to know all these things, and we desire to know more, for You are the Creator of the world, and You have some amazing ideas.

But, Father, we want to let your Holy Spirit lead today, open up our hearts to understand, and maybe that we can gain some, just 1 thing out of this breakout, out of this seminar, to apply it to our lives so that ultimately we will hasten the coming of Christ.

All right, let's start with some questions.

I want to know what you are expecting today from this seminar, this breakout.

I want to understand exactly maybe a few things that you're looking for.

And we hope to cover those things for you.

Because ultimately, this is not for us, right?

And so we don't want to waste your time while you're here And we need your participation because we want you to get something out of this.

I know you've been talking about the content, but I'm also hoping that we might say more about the behavior of people.

So not just content on Facebook, but what we should say or we shouldn't say.

Woo, there, that goes deep, that goes Deve.

Okay, does the authority, maybe a pastor answering on Facebook or social media, is there a difference between an authoritative position or person in that position sharing or talking in there and a lay person I would say.

You're looking forward to, again, this is for you.

How to use it to enhance the local ministry.

All right, so we are going to try to cover most of the things that we just asked, okay?

Because those are very good questions to ask.

And before we jump into the discussion, I'm going to give you a little bit of a background about us.

So we have combined 10 plus years in media, radio, television.

My husband also does a lot of time management.

This is why my life is a lot more organized.

We've also trained churches here in the United States, in Jamaica, in India, around the world, training them, How can we utilize the cell phones, the internet, to share the gospel?

And we have right now devoted our lives to helping Christian businesses and ministries reach thousands of people online.

Almost half of the world's population is online.

So before I go into this, a little bit of a personal story.

I am from the islands, specifically the Bahamas.

Some of you might be familiar with this story.

When we got married, a common food item is rice.

And Asians, generally speaking, when they cook rice, make it white, plain, no salt.

And the Caribbean, many of us who are from the Caribbean, we have to season our rice and we have to use salt.

So you have this conflict, salt or no salt.

How many of you would say that the way to solve the issue is to just get rid of the salt totally?
