Then the Fire of the Lord Fell

And I hope that you're nicely refreshed and back again to hear God's word.

Very happy to be back with you this afternoon and I Truly hope and I pray that we'll continue this morning's sermon in a Bible study format.

As you know, we were talking earlier on, beginning from last night, about the importance of a revival.

And it began with a spirit of prophecy quote found in the Selected Messages, page 121, where the Servant of the Lord tells us that a revival of true godliness is the greatest and most urgent of all our needs.

A revival of true godliness is the greatest and most urgent of all our needs.

A revival of True Godliness is the greatest and most urgent of all our needs.

That's the continuation of where we'll be taking off this afternoon.

But before we begin, why don't we just bow our heads for an opening word of prayer.

Gracious and eternal Father, we want to thank you for bringing us safely back to this hall this afternoon.

We pray now that as we open your word, that you illuminate our hearts and our minds.

Because this is a continuation from this morning's sermon, I'm going to basically review everything that we touched on earlier on this morning.

So if you have your Bibles real quick, turn with me to Isaiah 57.

All of these verses I spoke about earlier on this morning, for those of you that were here this morning.

We touched on these verses real briefly, but I want to review to them because they basically just transition into what we want to be talking about this afternoon.

In Isaiah chapter 57, Isaiah chapter 57 and verse 15, we talked about this.

This morning we found out that whenever there's a revival, a revival comes through people.

It doesn't come through an object, it doesn't come through a church building, but it comes through people.

But what kind of qualities does God look for in order to bring about a revival?

The Bible says here, For thus saith the High and Lofty 1, that in habiteth eternity, whose name is holy, I dwell, or I tabernacle, I build my sanctuary.

The very same words that is used in Exodus 25 verse 8.

Let them build me a sanctuary that I may what folks?

This is the very same language that God uses concerning the building of a sanctuary.

In other words, God doesn't want to build around you, He wants to build in the midst of you.

He says, I want a tabernacle in the midst of my people.

The Bible says, I dwell in the high and holy place with Him that is of a contrite and humble spirit to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

That if there's ever 2 imperative qualities that you and I need to bring about a revival, it is contrition and humility.

Those are the 2 imperative virtues that you and I ought to experience in order to bring about revival in our hearts.

It doesn't matter how much money you have.

It doesn't matter how many acquisitions you may have gained.

It doesn't matter how big your house or how nice or fancy your car is.

If you're humble and repentant, God will revive you.

And before there can be a revival that permeates amongst God's people, it must be preceded by repentance, humiliation.

And we talked about that this morning, that the theology of Isaiah 57, 15, the underlying theology of Isaiah 57, 15 is 1 of my favorites.

God is simply saying, listen, I dwell or I meet people at their humbleness.

God meets us when we acknowledge that we are nothing.

God meets us at our brokenness, at our hopelessness, at the point of desperation.

That's the underlying current of Isaiah 57, 15.

If you're humble, God will dwell with you.

If you realize that you're a sinner in need of the gospel of God, that's when God revives you.

For the Bible makes it clear that God cannot revive a proud and an arrogant heart.

God cannot revive a proud and an arrogant heart.

He meets us at our humbleness, at our nothingness, at our brokenness, at our desperation.

And finally, when we come to the point when we are in total dependence for God's mercy and His grace.

Where can we go to bring about repentance?

Acts 5.31 was 1 of them, but Romans chapter 2, since we're reviewing.

If repentance precedes a revival, where can I come to to bring about repentance?

We're reviewing here because you'll notice that as we transition to the next story, the next narrative in the Old Testament, Every principle that I mentioned to you will be repeated right there in that very narrative when it comes to the story of Elijah.

The Bible says, "...or despises thou the riches of his goodness, and the forbearance and longsuffering, not knowing that what, folks?

That the goodness of God leadeth thee to where?

And we made that plain and clear this morning.

There is nothing in you, there is nothing in me, there is no good works in you that can bring you to the point of repentance.

For the Bible teaches us that what happened in the Garden of Eden 6, 000 years ago is still affecting you and I this morning.

Ingrained into our very fiber, ingrained into our very molecule, ingrained into our very DNA is sin.

Therefore there is nothing in you that can bring about repentance.

It only comes from the mercy and the grace of God.

That's why we mentioned this morning that when we come to God just as you are, God will give you the gift of repentance.

There is nothing you cannot study your way through it.
