Twenty Mile March

A few weeks ago, a couple weeks ago, we had a special musical guest visit our church.

John Millay, and he is a very talented Seventh-day Adventist singer-songwriter.

And I praise the Lord for musicians and artists of various sorts who are bringing a distinctively Seventh-day Adventist voice using the arts.

And I know some of you were here that evening and I pray that you were blessed.

Now, after John and his wife Elisa left us the next day, their plan was to head up to New England and to hike part of the Appalachian Trail, the Appalachian Trail through the mountains.

And they were going to get their, they had their backpacks, and they had their gear, their tents, their bags, their sleeping bags, their sleeping mats, they had their food, and they were going to go hike the Appalachian Trail through the mountains.

And I don't know about you, but I'm not an outdoorsy type of person like that.

I don't know about you, but when it comes to roughing it, my idea of roughing it is having to sleep in a sleeping bag rather than having sheets.

Now some of you may be outdoorsy, I know Brother Rick, you're very outdoorsy, you have your own canoes, you perhaps go down rivers for overnight camping trips.

And I respect and admire and I even, part of me aspires To be outdoorsy like that.

And let's not even talk about what my wife is like.

Yet when I think about it, this idea of being outdoors and camping and roughing it, I can't help but think about these kinds of things when I walk through a place like Valley Forge.

And I think about all that those soldiers did, or even go back to the Mayflower, when you had those pilgrims who first came off that boat into this wild country.

And when I think about these explorers, like Lewis and Clark, and others who went from the East Coast all the way to the Pacific Northwest.

I think they started in Missouri, actually.

It really amazes me to think about what these people went through.

And again, remembering that I'm not a very outdoorsy person, it really amazes me to think about these people who gave so much and sacrificed so much, revealing to us a body of knowledge, maps, terrain, settling cities and towns in undiscovered places.

And we take all of this for granted today.

It really makes me think that perhaps I shouldn't complain so much when the 202 is clogged up in the morning on the way to work.

Even on the way to work or on the way back from work, You see the freeway, of course, but then on each side, you see these enormous trees.

Each 1 of those trees had to be cut down by somebody.

And then all that pavement had to be laid.

And here I am, complaining that instead of taking me 15 minutes to get to work, it might take me 25.

Actually, when I think about it, it's a little bit embarrassing.

And so we owe a debt of gratitude to these people who came before us.

Now this is October, it's the first Sabbath of October, and in October of 1911, there was quite a spectacular exploratory expedition leaving.

In fact, there were 2 at about the same time, in fact.

It was to the South Pole, exploration to the South Pole.

His name was Rold Amundsen, Rold Amundsen.

And the second was a gentleman named Robert F.

Scott, F standing for falcon, which is a pretty cool name actually, I think.

And they were both on a race, on a race to get to the South Pole.

And of course, each 1 of them wanted to get there first.

Each 1 of them wanted to get there first, and it was a race to the South Pole.

And there were a lot of similarities between the 2 gentlemen.

Rolda Admonson was 39 years old, and Robert Falcon Scott was 43.

Admonson, he had discovered and explored what's called the Northwest Passage.

And Scott, he had actually led a prior expedition to the South Pole, which was unsuccessful.

So they both had significant experience going out and exploring these wilderness places.

They both started within days of each other, and they were on a race.

The total trip, round trip, was 1, 400 miles.

That's like going from New York City to Chicago and back, but not in an airplane, not in a train, and not in an automobile with interstates.

1, 400 miles, that's a long trip, and it's in the most unforgiving environment in the world.

In fact, since it's October and since they were leaving in October, I thought I could just check the weather in Antarctica this morning and see what it was like.

Now Antarctica is 1 of the continents, so it's very large, it's very large, and so you actually see different, you see different temperatures depending on where you're looking at.

For example, on some of the parts that are on the edges farthest north, The temperatures this morning were in the mid 30s, low to mid 30s.

And that sounds cold, but it's not too bad.

In fact, we can get into the mid 30s around here.

But at the very South Pole and the farther south you go, I saw temperatures as cold as negative 40 and negative 60 Fahrenheit.

As an explorer on an expedition going through that kind of terrain and temperature and weather.

And of course, they did not have Google Maps.

They did not have cell phones that they could call each other and call for assistance.

They didn't have helicopters that could come in and save them.

And so, I really have to respect and be amazed at these kinds of explorers.

But 1 of them won and the other 1 came in second.

And I would ask you, what's the difference?

Rold Admunsen, the Norwegian, he got there and came back first.

And I think you can expect that it was indeed something else.

There were many differences between the 2 expeditions and how they approached this treacherous, difficult trip.

Roald Admensen, he did many things to prepare for this trip.

First of all, he decided that He would travel from Norway to Spain on a bicycle.

Because between Norway and Spain, there are lots of mountains, there's lots of terrain, and so, and cycling is of course a very excellent form of exercise, and so he wanted to get fit.

So he took a 2, 000 mile round trip on a bicycle.

He also decided that he needed to understand what it's like to live in that kind of area.
