1. How to Forecast Future Fanaticism

Our Father in heaven, I ask as we look at your Holy Bible that you would make it plain to us what is true.

Guide us by your Holy Spirit, I ask in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Perhaps a year or 2 ago my wife and I were watching some sort of documentary or something like that.

I don't know really what it was or where it was, but I sure remember what I saw.

I saw some bushmen, that is some Africans that lived in the bush that were hunters that were dressed very insufficiently, but they had their weaponry with them and they were about to try a very daring stunt.

What they had found was a pride of lions that had made a recent kill and had fresh game right there that the lions were beginning to eat.

The bushmen snuck up close to the lions, then they got ready and with as big a display as they could, yelling and howling, they ran at the lions waving their instruments and it scared the lions and the lions backed off the kill the Bushmen cut themselves some hunks of meat and high-tailed it out of there.

I'm not trying to teach you anything about hunting or anything about Bushmen, but I want you to think about that Because as we talk about fanaticism this weekend, I have a fear.

I don't think that most of the people in North England Conference are honestly in danger of fanaticism.

I think most people are probably more likely asleep.

More people are probably more likely involved in materialism or being encroached with some other spiritual disaster.

I don't really think that Fanaticism is the major tool the devil's going to use to undo most people in this area.

But I can sure see how the devil would use fanaticism to mess up even those who are in no danger of being fanatics.

It would be the same way the Bushmen messed up the Lions.

You could learn to associate the writings of our pioneers with fanaticism.

You might learn to associate the writings of Ellen White with fanaticism.

You might learn to associate the book of Daniel or Daniel 11 or 12 with fanaticism.

You might learn to associate deep Bible study and zeal, yeah, zeal, with fanaticism.

The devil might, by having a fanatic nearby, scare you off what is something legitimate for you.

And I hope you will not be scared off from legitimate study, legitimate interest in prophecy, something real and important.

Do you understand what I'm trying to tell you right now?

If the devil can use fanaticism to drive you away from what's important for you, he has succeeded even if you never even think about joining the fanatical movement.

That being said, I'd like you to turn to your Bibles.

And I'm debating about how I can speak loud enough for you to hear without using this microphone so I can have 2 hands, but maybe I'll just use 1 hand and just make it work.

We're talking this evening about how you can predict the next fanatical movement in the UK.

That is, I think if you've been around for a while, you've known several fanatical movements, and I'm sure the devil isn't done inventing them.

And I want to give you ideas tonight of how you can anticipate what's coming down the pike.

Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved.

For I bear them record that they have a what?

They have a zeal of God, but not according to Knowledge.

Now when Paul says they have a zeal of God, can you just tell me what are some of the evidences that they had a zeal of God?

Did they arrange to have James executed by the sword?

And you know Peter was heading that direction too, but God saved him by an angel.

They had a zeal, but their zeal wasn't according to knowledge, that is there was an ignorance combined with their zeal.

That, in my mind, is a really simple way to characterize fanaticism.

Fanaticism is a zeal that is intimately connected with an unfortunate ignorance.

And we're going to see in the next verse 1 of the most common types of ignorance that leads to a fanatical movement.

For they, being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God." There is a zeal that is very natural to our human way of thinking.

It is a zeal to be good enough, a zeal to be in that special accepted group, a zeal to be in the group that God approves.

And I tell you, if you are ignorant of how righteousness by faith works in a practical way, you are going to be an easy target for fanatical movements.

That was slightly an exaggeration because you could be ignorant of righteousness by faith and be so dead in the water the devil will never try to approach you with fanaticism.

But 1 way or the other, if you're ignorant of Christ's righteousness, you are a sitting duck for something.

And for many, the devil will come at you looking for a way to make you feel like you are the particular, chosen, special, the right, the accepted, something, getting your identity by something other than where it ought to come from, Christ and his righteousness.

If I could give my first hint tonight, it would be this.

Expect more attacks on the substitutionary atonement of Jesus.

Like, maybe I was brought here this weekend to deal with Jeff Pippenger, but I, in my own mind, suspect that the fanaticism of Pippenger will probably eventually die down.

But I expect the fanaticism of a man named Timothy Jennings to just grow and grow and grow.

It's not the same thing, it's not even related, it has nothing to do with the 2520.

But both fanaticisms have something to do with Romans chapter 10.

That is being ignorant of Christ's righteousness and how Christ's righteousness works.

Being ignorant of that, there's an effort to go about and establish one's own righteousness.

Tonight, I told you we're going to talk about how to predict the next fanaticism coming.

Tomorrow evening, or excuse me, tomorrow morning, I'm going to talk to you about the 2520.

That's going to be my first talk tomorrow morning about the 2520 prophecy, but I'm titling that talk maybe in a strange way.

It's going to be, The 2520 is not the problem.

I will address the issues surrounding it, but the 2520 is not the problem.

Then in the 11 o'clock service, we'll be talking about my theme for this weekend, fanaticism and faith, but really it'll be fanaticism and the latter rain.

Because I want to give you an idea of how those 2 things relate.

Maybe I'll just give you a hint up front.

When Ellen White writes about the latter rain, she often mentions 2 truths related to it, related to fanaticism.

1 is that there will be plenty of real fanaticism associated with the latter rain.

And 2, that the real latter rain itself will be mislabeled fanaticism.

Both of those realities are so significant that if we don't really understand righteousness by faith and the latter rain and the Holy Spirit, we're almost doomed to fall into the camp of either rejecting the latter rain because we think it's fanaticism, or of accepting fanaticism because it's associated with the latter rain.

I hope by the end of tomorrow that you will have some tools to avoid either 1 of those spiritual disasters.

Then in the afternoon talk, just before a Q&A session, we'll be talking about how your local congregation should relate to fanatics.

About what Paul said when he said, I would that they that troubled you were cut off.

And we'll be talking about the curses of Leviticus 26.

Like maybe many of you have never even heard of the curses of Leviticus 26.

But if you've studied with someone who's into Pippin Jurism or the 2520, even if you don't remember it, I guarantee you've heard about the curses of Leviticus 26.

We'll be talking about those in that last session, then we'll have a Q&A.

I mean, I say a Q&A, but it's gonna be a panel discussion, but I think there'll be a chance for questions.

But please, if you have any, think of them, write them down.

I am so happy to address questions you have.

I think that even if you ask a hard question, a controversial question, don't be embarrassed to do that.

As soon as you ask a question that's hard, for the first time in the whole meeting, someone will pay attention.

If you want to give us a heads up, you could give it to us before the meeting, then you might get a better answer.

In Germany, in June, not next June, but past June, There was something that hasn't happened in Germany before.

There was a meeting, you might say, like this in a way.

I mean it was a revival-oriented meeting of Seventh-day Adventists.

This was in the southern part of Germany.

And the theme for the weekend was the 3 Angels' Messages.

And I'm going to talk to you right after this about what we should think about that theme.

But that was the theme that several speakers were there.
