What to Wear Oh What to Wear

Well, we will dive into our subject this morning.

The topic is what to wear or what to wear.

And how many of you have ever wondered what am I going to wear today, right?

And there's something that we're going to find today that it is essential that you wear the same thing every day.

And you say, wear the same thing every day?

And you know, whenever I travel, I try to be as condensed as possible, but sometimes it creeps up on me and my suitcase just gets bigger and bigger.

Kind of like the haystack, you go through the line and get a taco salad and you're intending it to be this big and you think you're measuring for that but by the time you're finished it's like this.

Well, there's nothing else to do, you just eat it, right?

And you just look embarrassed and you try to like take several bites before you start talking to people so that way when people look at your plate, you know, it doesn't look as full, right?

But there's something that we need to be wearing every day, and we're going to talk about that this morning, aside from your normal garments.

We'll ask the Lord's blessing to be with us 1 more time.

Father, we thank you so much this morning that we can come and Feast at your table to open your word.

We've already been inspired through the service Lord We're thankful for the school and the students that were singing for us today singing for you They weren't singing for us that were singing for you to your glory to your honor to your praise And we asked Lord that today the merits of Jesus would be first and foremost on our hearts, that because of Him our worship is acceptable to you.

As we sing, we pray, and now we open the word, Lord.

We ask that your presence would be near to us.

We need to be in this place on your holy day, Lord.

So we ask you to guide and direct us now as we open the Bible.

How many of you have ever had a dream where maybe you went to a special event, maybe a wedding, maybe some kind of banquet, and you are looking around at all the people that are there, and you see that they're all very finely dressed.

They all have suits, they have tuxedos, beautiful dresses, and then in your dream, you happen to look down, and you're dressed in something along the lines of flip-flops, shorts, and some kind of scraggly t-shirt.

And you think to yourself, oh no, I am radically out of place.

How many of you have ever had that happen to you before?

Now being underdressed is much worse than being overdressed.

Because if you're overdressed, you can always what?

You can take off a tie, you can take off a jacket, you can take off whatever.

But if you're underdressed, you're in trouble, right?

And we're gonna talk this morning about a man that was considerably underdressed.

And when you go to such a kind of a banquet or some type of this event like this, 1 thing you do not want is to be underdressed.

Have you ever had that mortifying feeling and then you woke up and realized it was just a dream.

And you're so thankful you say, oh man, praise the Lord, I wasn't really at that place when I walked in looking like that, right?

So let's go to Matthew chapter 22, please.

And we're going to read about a parable of the wedding feast, a parable that Jesus tells and it has extreme significance for us, extreme significance for you and for me and for each 1 of us.

So Matthew chapter 22 is a very powerful passage.

It applies to our day, our time and our church even.

And so we're going to take a look at this parable and see what the Bible says.

Verse 1, Matthew 22, the Bible says, And Jesus answered and spoke to them again by parables, and said, The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son, and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding and they were not willing to come.

Now let me ask you something, is a wedding a big deal?

It's a very special day for the couple, and you know, you can typically bank on the idea that about as many wedding invitations as you send out, you're going to get roughly half of the number of guests that you mail to, right?

I just got an invitation for Rachel and Alan's wedding.

I don't know where they're at, but I'm praising the Lord for that.

And I hate to say this, and it's terrible, but I'm going to be out of town for Christmas, so I'm not going to be able to get it.

And I started to lay it aside, because you know, if you're going to attend, you want to do what?

Check, I'm coming, and then you send it back so that they know that you're coming, correct?

Well, as I was setting it aside thinking, well, I feel so bad that there...

And let me just say, Rachel and Alan, wherever you are, I don't see you, Alan was helping me in the back, there's nothing more that I wish I could do than to be there.

But last year we missed our family for Christmas because we were moving here and my wife said, we're never doing that again.

So I'm just going by, I'm not putting the blame on her.

That was a whale moment for those of you that know what I'm talking about.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, you don't want to know.

But I noticed just as I was setting it aside, and I said, well, we'll hang it on the fridge, I noticed that it said, if you're not able to attend, please check that and also mail it back.

And I thought, whoa, I'm glad I caught that, because they don't want to mail them out and then nobody responds and all of a sudden these people show up, right?

So, imagine though, if I send it back and it says, I'm sorry, I'm not able to make it, would they send me another invitation?

No, because I've told them I'm not coming, right?

So here this king sends out an invitation to the people and he says, look my son is getting married.

And who's Jesus wanting to be married to?

So essentially, the king sends out this invitation and he says, look, I want you to come.

Now if a king sent an invitation, if you got an invitation in the mail from, I started to say the president, but I don't know how you feel about him.

But somebody exceedingly important, and they said, I want you to come.

Let's just say it is the president, imagine your favorite president right now and he sent you an invitation and he said I want you to come to the marriage of my son.

How many of you would think he must have the wrong address right?

That's what I would think, but it said your name, your address, how many of you would say, I need to make every effort to get there?

Because when a king or a president invites you to the wedding, it is a what?

So This king sends out an invitation to the people who actually, ironically, are supposedly going to be the ones, spiritually speaking, that will be married to his son, so it's actually their own wedding.

They don't even come to their own wedding.

And it says that they cannot come, they're not willing to come.

Now we said if you sent out an invitation and somebody wrote back and said I can't come, you would not send another invitation, correct?

And yet look what the king does in the next verse, verse 4.

It says again, he sent out other servants saying, tell those who are invited, see, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and fatted cattle are killed and all things are ready, come to the wedding.
