The Cost of Discipleship- Part 2

Our message this morning is the call of cost.

I could say, you could say also the call of discipleship part 2.

And last week we talked about some very important things.

If you were not here last Sabbath, please pick up a copy of that from the AV folks.

But we're going to talk this week, a second part, another aspect of the cost of discipleship.

And we're going to open our Bibles this morning, so I hope you brought those.

And If you did not, please check there in the front of you, there should be 1.

But we're going to have prayer together, then we're going to dive into God's Word.

Father in heaven, Lord, we thank you this morning that we can be in this place.

And we reverently, we humbly ask for the power of the Holy Spirit to be here this morning.

As it was last week, as it was the week before, so we plead for it again today.

And we ask, Father, that your presence would attend our hearts.

We pray, dear Father, that you would call each of us to discipleship.

We pray that our hardened hearts will respond to be softened by your spirit, by your grace.

So we ask Father and we thank you that you have promised to be here where 2 or 3 are gathered Lord and we are so very Grateful father that you have promised to transform our hearts.

I just want to give you a heads up this morning that I am going to invite you to make a decision this following this message and I'm going to have a decision card that will give you an opportunity to make a decision for the Lord, and also to make a decision to serve the Lord.

Alright, I want to invite you to turn in your Bibles to Luke chapter 5.

Luke chapter 5, and we're going to just review real quickly a couple of verses that we studied last week.

Luke chapter 5 and we're going to look at verse 10, well verse 9 through 11.

And last week we talked about Peter, James, and John receiving the call of the Father Jesus.

And they were out there fishing, and they had caught nothing all night, and Jesus asked them to cast out their nets 1 more time, so they did.

And we found that Peter was willing to submit and to obey Jesus.

He had failed, And when he did this, when he obeyed the voice of the Lord, after striving in his own efforts and failing, he found success.

And then he came and he stood in the presence of Jesus, and he fell down and he said, Lord, depart from me, For I am what kind of a man?

I'm a sinful man, and He recognized that He was in the presence of 1 considerably and much greater than Himself.

In order for us to really experience true discipleship, we have to fail.

Because until we fail, we're going to keep doing our own thing, right?

And it's not until we fail enough times that we recognize and we're able to begin to hear, and the Lord begins to soften our hearts to hear the call of the Master.

And we saw also that true discipleship is to seek out Jesus and remain where He is regardless of where He is or what we have to do to get there.

We have to go through some bitter experiences, sometimes in this life, before our hearts can be awakened to the call of Jesus.

How many of you found that principle to be true in your own lives?

And Jesus was, or Peter was standing in the presence of Jesus, and he said, Depart from me for I'm a sinful man.

And verse 9, For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken.

And so we saw last week that they were standing in front of Jesus, and they had won the lottery.

They had won the lottery, so to speak, and they had probably, for sure, the largest catch that they had ever made.

And all the boats, all the nets were so full that they were beginning to break.

And they brought it all to shore and they laid it all out.

And right there, sitting in front of them, was their very comfortable, very fat retirement account.

And there they were, in the presence of all the, some of the greatest things that the world could offer.

I mean, you, And you know, it's amazing because even though there was a lot of money sitting in front of them, what did it smell like?

Because No matter how much of it you have, that's really in the end all the world's going to give you, right?

And so they were sitting there and there it was and there was someone standing behind them waiting patiently and calmly.

And as they were astonished, they were like, Whoa, look at all these fish.

We can pay our taxes to Rome for the next, for the rest of our lives.

They were standing there in all of this, and there's Jesus just standing there patiently, just waiting for that glamour to wear off.

And how often does the glamour of the world wear off, friends?

And once the glamour wore off and they realized that there was the world and there was Jesus, and He was standing there waiting.

When they looked up, they saw His voice, or they saw Him and heard His voice.

And in another gospel it says, He called them to come and follow Him.

And the Bible says, So when they had brought their boats to the land, they forsook all and followed Him.

And we found that forsaking all is really not forsaking much at all, is it?

Forsaking all is really not forsaking much at all.

When they saw the glory and the glamour of the living Christ standing in front of them, when they recognized that they were in the presence of 1 greater, they heard His voice, they saw His person and His presence, and the Holy Spirit drawing them to Him was more than they could resist.

And they said, no thank you to the world.

And they said, I'm coming to you, Lord Jesus.

And Jesus today gives you and I that same call, doesn't He?

We talked about forsaking all the fowl of Jesus.

That doesn't mean we all go out and quit our jobs and sell our houses.

The Lord may call us to that and He will call us to that 1 day soon, right?

But laying it all on the altar for Him, yes or no?

So when Jesus said to them, do not be afraid from now on you will catch men, come and follow Me.
