The College of Medical Evangelists: A Short History of Loma Linda University

The College of Medical Evangelists, this health is tied to, good health is tied to the salvation of our souls and how each 1 of us, it is important for each 1 of us to to obey the laws of health And if we do not obey those laws, then there are consequences.

And also, I think, I know that he went over some of our past history in terms of Dr.

Kellogg and the institution that he helped to start up in Battle Creek and some of the challenges that came from that institution.

And it was during this period when they were having a lot of challenges, a lot of problems with Dr.

Kellogg and the sanitarium in Battle Creek when God started to, God decided to move on from that place and build a different system of teaching.

Just to point out some things in the news, I don't know how many of you read the USA News and World Report.

In that was 10 health habits that will help you live to 100.

That was 1 that will help you to live till 100.

If you floss daily, you reduce the bio burden in your body.

And as a result, it can help you live longer.

And it said, live like a Seventh-day Adventist.

Americans who define themselves as Seventh-day Adventists have an average life expectancy of 89, about a decade longer than the average American.

1 of the basic tenets of the religion is that it's important to cherish the body as that it's on loan from God, which means no smoking, alcohol abuse, or overindulging in sweets.

Followers typically stick to a vegetarian diet based on fruits, vegetables, beans and nuts and get plenty of exercise.

They're also very focused on family and community.

So this is what they said about Seventh Adventists.

Number 8 on the list of 10 habits that will help you live to 100 was live like a Seventh-day Adventist.

So Seventh-day Adventists in the last 150 years have made a mark on the world.

And we will be talking about that mark and how that came to be.

And this mark has been in the area of healthcare and medical evangelism.

There's a basic premise that says individuals cannot arrive at their destination unless they know where they're going.

And it is a simple statement but it's a very profound 1 at the same time.

You will never know if you've arrived if you don't know what your destination is.

And so when CME was created, it was created with a certain vision of what needed to be accomplished through this institution and the model that CME was built upon was a model that was to be replicated elsewhere but very specifically the model that was to be followed was to be done here at CME.

White had a vision and in that vision she saw a certain place and she saw it very vividly.

So vividly that even though the church went and bought 2 other sanitariums, Glendale and Paradise Valley, at very low cost and were able to make those function, she went to those places and they realized that this wasn't the place that she had found.

And in that vision, she had 4 specific things, 5 specific things that she was supposed to, that they were supposed to look for to help them guide them to the spot because after all Mrs.

White saw it in vision but the Lord did not give the exact location.

He gave certain specifics of that location and so since only she saw it, it was hard for her to, She tried as best to translate it to what she saw to the other people.

The property, number 1, the property would be secured for much less than the original cost.

Number 2, money would come from unexpected sources.

Number 3, this has to do more with the location and the property.

Number 4, the location would be somewhere in Southern California.

And number 5, the property had a tent-like canopy of trees.

So this was the 5 conditions of this vision.

And so every place they went to, they looked for unoccupied buildings, they looked for property that would be secured for much less than the original cost.

And most importantly, they looked for that physical representation, which was the canopy of trees.

And unfortunately, the place, Paradise Valley and Glendale, did not have this canopy of trees that Mrs.

That's the very simple reason why they were still looking for another location, having found 2 other very good places to build and to develop sanitariums.

There was another problem with this request from God And that was that the conference had no money.

The general conference had already gone into debt to buy these other 2 sanitariums, even though they had bought them at much less of the cost.

For example, Glendale was originally priced at $55, 000.

And just remember, $55, 000 in the 1800s or early 1900s is a lot of money.

And so $55, 000 was what the original price was.

The church eventually bought it for $12, 000.

Glendale was also somewhat similar to that.

But the general conference was feeling a pinch in terms of cash.

And they had told the California conference that they should adopt a no debt policy.

And the general conference was trying to adopt a no debt policy as well, which means that they would, if they were going to make any acquisitions, they would buy it straight cash and they would not go into debt.

And so they, looking at the picture that these leaders had of where the church was going, they decided that they were going to have a no-debt policy.

And they communicated that to the conference in California.

So with these 2 sanitariums in debt, how could they pick up another sanitarium and go further into debt with this no debt policy?

White indicated that the property would be around the cities of Riverside, San Bernardino, and Redlands.

Southern California is a large place, but she said that it would be around these 3 cities.

So, now Pastor John Burden had a reason to look for, a place to look for, and he was in this area.

By the way, the building, Burden Hall, is named in his honor.

And There was a place that he saw, that he had seen a few years earlier in 1901, and that was Loma Linda Association.

And this was in Loma Linda, right outside of the Redlands.

It was occupied by 40 businessmen and 80 physicians that were in the process of building a very large healthcare resort.

And they had very good plans, they had good capital, and they were putting together a wonderful plan for making this place into a healthcare resort.

And unfortunately for them, in 1905, this physician business group failed.

And they were selling the property for $155, 000.

And that's when, in today's money that's worth $3.1 million, but that is when John Burden, Having known the specifics of the location in terms of being between Riverside, San Bernardino and Redlands, he suddenly began to 0 in on this property.

White that he had found the property that met all the conditions of the vision and most importantly, it had that canopy of trees.

And so, they began to look more closely at that.

In 1901, it was occupied, but by 1905, it was unoccupied.

And not only that, but the price fell from $155, 000 to $85, 000.

And so now Loma Linda was coming within the ballpark of the church.

But when you don't have any money, if you're broke, $85, 000 is well, $85, 000, you know?

And you're not going to be able to raise that.

If you don't have the money, you just don't have it.

And the conference had their no debt policy.

And some of the church members questioned why they should invest in sanitariums.

After all, in the earlier days of their history of the church, they would get together when someone was sick and they would pray, sometimes all night, and that person would be healed.

And so they were saying, why should we depend on sanitariums?

We should go and just lay hands on the sick and heal them just like the apostles did.

White gave a more historical perspective on exactly what was needed.
