Jesus is someone that we can talk to as a friend.

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you so much for allowing us to lay our sins on you.

We thank you for the wonderful sacrifice that you made to give us this salvation to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

We're in the book of Luke and we just launched in last week, didn't we?

And we're on lesson number 2, Baptism and Temptations.

And this of course is referring to the work of John the Baptist and Jesus' entry, start to his Messiahship, his ministry.

And the memory text is Luke chapter 3 verse 22 and the Bible says, the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon him and a voice came from heaven which said, you are my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.

In ancient times, the preparations were also made in advance of the announced coming king.

Messengers were often dispatched into different areas around the region that the king would be visiting, letting folk know, the subjects know, to prepare for the event that the king was coming.

And this preparation primarily involved, in the most part, ensuring that the roads were good to travel on, good for the king to travel on, so that his experience might be more enjoyable.

And this was primarily done because the roads back then weren't kept up, they weren't kept in any good shape at all.

It would be very rare that you would see workmen along the side of the road wearing orange vests and orange cones and you wouldn't ever see those signs that say, your tax dollars at work, you wouldn't see that.

The roads were kept just the way they were and when you get a lot of travel, horses and feet and oxen and cattle, it just would tear up the ground.

And so, the major preparation was to prepare the way, the road, for the coming of the monarch.

The announcement of the arrival of the Messiah, the King of the Jews, had been committed to what nation?

It had been committed to Israel and because they were unprepared and they'd forfeited their privilege of announcing His coming, but God chose 1 to whom He would herald His arrival.

And so we're going to go over to Sunday's lesson, we're going to talk about prepare the way of the Lord.

Now before reintroducing, because we talked about him last week, before reintroducing the 1 God chose to announce the arrival of the Messiah, Luke provides a list of Roman authorities to establish the year the messenger of the Messiah, the forerunner of the Messiah would do his work and also the year the Messiah would appear upon the scene, he would be baptized.

And if you have your Bible there, if you turn with me to Luke chapter 3 and you might as well just keep your finger in Luke because we're going to be in chapter 3 and chapter 4 here this morning and we're going to read right along.

Luke chapter 3 verses 1 and 2, notice it says, now in the 15th year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, his brother being Philip tetrarch of Uteria and the region of Trachonitis, and Licinius tetrarch of Abilene.

While Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the Word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.

And so several dignitaries are listed in 1 sense to give us the year, to pinpoint the year that the work of John the Baptist was done or began and that Jesus came on the scene to be baptized.

Here you have Tiberius Caesar and except for the mention of Augustus Caesar in Matthew or rather Luke chapter 2 verse 1, the mention of Caesar throughout the Gospels always refers to Tiberius.

Tiberius Caesar was the ruling, was the Caesar who ruled during the time of Jesus' ministry, you see.

And Tiberius won out several campaigns before his appointment as the military governor of the provinces.

He was known as the first, quote, the first soldier of the empire.

And he was known for strict discipline, but he was pretty relaxed on taxation.

And the Bible says that it was in the 15th year of the reign of Tiberius that John was baptizing and preaching the gospel of repentance.

And essentially, that would lead us to the year AD 27, the fall of AD 26 to the fall of AD 27 in that region.

And then the next person that he mentions is Pontius Pilate, we kind of know him.

He was the fifth governor or the procurator who was an agent of the emperor rather than by a proconsul responsible to the Senate.

And they were given a subdivision of a province and in this case, Pontius Pilate was ruled over Judea, which was a subdivision of the province of Syria.

And this man, Pontius Pilate, was appointed by Rome.

He succeeded Valerius Gratis in AD 26, and he was essentially unbending and he was mean.

He brought to surface the spirit of revolt among the Jews and he did that in 3 particular areas.

Who is Jesus Christ?

Hymn 189, All That Thrills My Soul, says, who can cheer the heart like Jesus by his presence all divine, true and tender, pure and precious?

Let's sing the first and fourth verse of ♪ ♪ Who can share the heart like Jesus?

♪ By His presence so divine ♪ True and tender, true and precious, all are blessed to call him mine.

All that dwells my soul is Jesus, he is more than life to me to live, and the fairest of 10000 in the bloods with Lord I sing.

By the crystal flowing river, with the ransomed I will sing.

And the fair is doubt and doubt and in my blood, said, Lord, I sing.

And the fairies of 10000 in my path say, Lord, I see.

The Lord can thrill our soul and he can make our souls well, whole and well.

And that is our next song, an oldie but a goodie, It is Well, hymn 530.

Now this comes as a request from 10 people and I'm so excited to read all of their names.

Let's sing the first, second, and third verse of It Is Well With My Soul, hymn 530.

♪♪♪ ♪ ♪ When things like a river ♪ Attempted my way When sorrows like Sea billows roll Whatever my lot the rounds like sea billows roar.

Lord, ever by naught, thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul.

♪ I live of the joy of this glorious thought.

My sin not in part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross, It's there to the cross, and I bear it no more.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul.

And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be stout.

The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend.

Our last song this morning comes from our topical index of forgiveness.

Hymn 299, Forgive Our Sins As We Forgive.

This comes from Matthew chapter 6, verse 12, when the Lord taught us how to pray.

Now, the Bible talks about 2 types of forgiveness, the way that the Lord forgives us and how we should forgive others.

And so this morning as we sing hymn 299, let's think that forgiveness it's not just 1 act at 1 time, but a constant attitude that the Lord can give us.

So let's sing hymn 299, Forgive Us Our Sins As We Forgive, the first, second, and fourth verse.

♪ ♪ Forgive us, ancestors, We forgive.

Lord, you alone can grant us grace to live the words we say.

A path of honor, rich and vast, a unforgiving heart, that whose arms end will not lend, the unforgiving heart, and whose unwonted will not let all bitterness divide.

The Lord places us within our souls, and with reserved mercies.

And by your mercy, reconciled, all minds will spread your peace.

As we pray this morning, let us all together recite the Lord's Prayer that reminds us to forgive each other of our sins.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, as we forgive our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever, amen.

Well, we're gonna go right back into the book of Luke here this morning, and we're in chapter 3, lesson number 3, and the lesson is entitled, Who is Jesus Christ?

And the author is recording a conversation that Jesus is having with his disciples.

And he said to them, this is Luke 9 verse 20, he said to them, but who do you say that I am?

And Peter answered and said, the Christ of God.

In Matthew's rendition it's the Christ, the Son of the living God.

When we come to the subject of who is Jesus, the author of the lesson, and I'm gonna read the intro here on Sabbath afternoon.

Christ as the Lord of the Sabbath

Well, let's look at our memory text here, it's Mark chapter 2, verse 28 and 29, and notice what it says, this is Jesus speaking, he says the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath.

Therefore the Son of Man is Lord also of the Sabbath.

It's interesting that God didn't make the Sabbath and say, you know what, I've got a day here, I don't know what to do about it, it's kind of hanging and floating, let me, ah, I've got an idea, let me make someone to enjoy that day.

God said, the Bible says that he made man and then he gave man the Sabbath.

According to Jesus, Sabbath was made for man, given to man, and as a day of rest and a day of relationships, a day of ministry and a day of mercy.

And so that's what we're going to be looking at here this morning.

Turn with me and your Bibles, we're going to be looking at Mark, or rather Luke, chapter 4.

This is the Gospel according to Luke and we're going to delve into our study.

Over recent years, there's been a growing interest in the Sabbath.
