The Making of a Godly Man

Happy Sabbath to each 1 of you, and it's good to be here, room full of men.

What I'd like to do, I'd like to begin with a word of prayer, and then share some thoughts with you as we prepare to go into our discussion.

If you'd join me, I really like kneeling before the Master, if you would join me in doing just that.

Our most kind and gracious Father, we thank you for this lovely Sabbath you have given to us and the opportunity that we have to come together here and to learn more about the role that you have called us to as godly men.

And I ask, loving Father, that through the power of the Holy Spirit, you will touch each, that each will hear your voice.

I pray, Father, too, at this time, You know precisely what it is I need to discuss.

And I ask that you will bring to my heart and to my mind those things you'd have me to share.

I am most grateful for all the things you have done in my life, most kind and gracious Father.

And I just want to see those blessings bestowed upon them in here.

And so Lord, each has come because we recognize that we have a need and that you have the solution.

There are others, Lord, who are teetering on whether to come bring them.

I pray, Lord, that they will have this special divine appointment with You.

So this next 2 hours, Father, belong to You, and I pray that Your name will be glorified in it, and I ask this in Christ's name, Amen.

Just want to share a little bit about my background.

My parents are Cuban, came from the island of Cuba when Castro took over, moved to New York and that's where I was born.

My father was atheist, and my mother Catholic.

Moved to Chicago, then to Los Angeles, where my mother came to know about the Advent message.

My growing up years was rather turbulent.

And this plays in, because these are the things our background, our past, is what shapes us.

And there was just a constant warfare in my home.

And when he left, pretty much, my brother's gone and my dad was work days, I pretty much became the man of the house beginning at about the age 9.

That means that I disciplined my sister and raised my, Are you with me?

But these are the things that shaped my past.

And, you know, where does, in that type of a background, do you learn how to be a man when you don't have the model?

And that really is an example for many of us.

We live in a culture that mocks the husband.

He's usually the dummy in the house, in movies, television, that the home can barely get by with him.

There's not respect or honor in the position.

And then on top of that, the portrayals of being a man we get is from the movies.

I know that was for me without my dad being there.

And who she pointed me to as to what a man is all about was Cary Grant.

And even though that was ahead of my time, we did have reruns.

So, what do you know about being a godly man?

What I'd like to do today is just share with you the need that we have to understand what being a godly man is and then how to be 1.

You know, the statistics right now for divorce within the world is anywhere between, or our culture anyway, 49 to 65%.

When you go into the Christian arena and you look at the statistics, they're the same.

Christianity ought to make a difference, shouldn't it?

I want to share with you an article, We pastors get these, I don't know if anybody here gets it, Ministry Magazine.

And it was an interview between Derek Morris, he was interviewing Joshua McDowell, who's very much involved in youth ministries.

He quotes a number of studies here by George Barna, very significant.

The question that stood out to me is this 1.

Derek Morris asked the question, you mentioned on your website that we need a spiritual revolution in the Christian community, a cross-cultural revolution.

And then McDowell answers, he says, I hate to say this, but right now we're losing the battle.

We are not seeing transformation in the lives of professed Christian young people.

75 to 80 percent of our young people are leaving the church.

Research by Barnar Gallup and others show that there is hardly any difference between a young person inside the church and a secular young person outside the church.

I have sat on academy boards, elementary boards, and educational committees.

And in the conference that I was in prior to the 1 I'm currently working in, the loss rate that was discussed there was 80% of our youth.

A conference president, a friend of mine, called.

We've both been involved in family ministries.

And he told me in his conference it's 90%.

I am fully convinced that God has given the role to the man to stop those numbers.

And before we're done, I'm going to prove it to you.

I'm going to prove it to you from Scripture...

That God has called men, especially this last generation, to stop the slide.

Excuse me, the way the family goes, the church goes...

If we want to correct the ills that exist in our nation, our society and our church, It has to be in the family.

It's interesting that we're focusing the efforts on turning nations around with laws and society and church, trying this, that and the other, where the real focus needs to be is in your home and mine, 1 family at a time.

And this is the passion that my wife and I have.

So, what I'm going to do this afternoon is I'm going to share a model, a biblical model that the Bible has given to us and that is Noah.

On what a godly man is like in the last days.

And I'm going to share a lot of it from my testimony of how the Lord has been sharing with me of the role of the man in the home.

Now, I realize that many of you here are not married.

And so, I'm praying that this will lay a foundation for you, that you will know what to look for and what to be preparing for.
