How to Give a Bible Study

Dear Heavenly Father, Lord, we thank you again for the privilege of being here in Phoenix and Tempe, here on the campus of Arizona State University to worship you and to learn at your feet unmolested.

Lord, indeed It is a privilege, it is a gift that we should not take for granted.

For there are plenty throughout the world that cannot do this openly, that people are being persecuted left and right for their beliefs, Lord, and we thank you for the time that we can come here and have the freedom to do this openly.

And Lord, as we spend some time in learning how to give Bible studies, we pray that what we learn today will not be simply how-to's, but will, in fact, transform our lives, Lord, that we will see you for who you are and the awesome privilege it is to co-labor with you in leading souls to you.

So be with us, keep us awake, if we need a stretch feel free to stand up and stretch or do whatever is needed to have our full attention.

Thank you for answering, for we ask in Christ's name, amen.

We'll just do a quick overview of the agenda for this hour or so.

In understanding how to give Bible studies, Before we get to the how, we must understand the why.

So we'll spend some time understanding the why we should give Bible studies and that hopefully will encourage us to give Bible studies.

Then we'll get into the practice of or the practicality of how to give Bible studies.

I understand that there are people here that have, like we have the full spectrum of Bible study experience, Bible giving, Bible study giving experience, from those who have never done it, probably never even heard of it, which that would be hard to believe, to those that may be experts.

So we need everybody to be patient with everybody, right?

Okay, so if you're like, I know this already, that's great, but open up your hearts to maybe hear something new or apply something new to already what you know and also to help other people get to that level as well.

For those who don't know anything just soak it all up and then you'll have opportunities to try it out see what works best for you and not.

So they're not laws and how to give Bible studies, but they're practical experiences that we both have gone through and some tips that we've learned along the way.

And then lastly, love you, and then lastly, lastly will be what is next?

Okay, I learn all these things, but ACFI is about practicality.

So how do I take what I learn and actually apply it once I leave beautiful Tempe?

We'll look at this passage here in Romans chapter 10, starting at verse 10.

Paul writing here, he says, For with the heart 1 believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation for the scripture says whoever believes on him will not be put to shame for there is no distinction between Jew and Greek for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon him.

For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

So here in these few verses, we see Paul, speaking to the Romans, of course, right?

And the chapter before, he's talking about the situation with the Israelites, how they have rejected the truth that God has given them, that Jesus is the Messiah.

And then, but he's not like, oh they just rejected it, but he's very sad about it.

You know, he's like, man, God has given them the opportunity to know Christ.

In chapter 10 he speaks about the Gentiles now, those who too have the opportunity to know about Christ.

We have in verse 11, whoever believes on him will not be put to shame.

And then verse 13, for whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

So Paul's purpose is not that, hey, you just know about Jesus, but he wants them to do what?

To recognize their need for him and that when they call upon the Lord they will be what?

So it's not an intellectual just exercise of, oh I know these things or I could tell you these things but the end goal is for people to be able to call on the name of the Lord see their need accept him as Lord and Savior and thereby be saved amen is that clear yes thank you let's continue reading 14 and 15 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?

And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?

And how shall they hear without a preacher?

And how shall they preach unless they are sent?

As it is written, how beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things.

So now Paul, after he lays the foundation, hey, we want people to call upon the name of the Lord so that they may be saved, whether a Jew or a Greek.

How can they call on somebody they never believe or they don't know.

And so what are the practical questions or the rhetorical questions he asks?

So Paul in essence in asking these rhetorical questions, Paul here is asking rhetorical questions but he's giving us answers right?

So the end goal is for people to call upon the name of the Lord and to be saved.

So what are, looking at these 2 verses, what are the practical steps for someone to call upon the name of the Lord and to be saved?

How about we try to do it in order as far as how he presented it.

If we were to take his questions and break it down and be like, huh, what would be the train to salvation?

They preach, And preaching, what does that mean?

Preach in the Greek just simply means to proclaim, to share.

You don't need to be ordained to be able to preach, to proclaim, okay?

Okay, so now, after they preach, what's next?

So preaching gives people the opportunity to hear of this.

And then once they hear, God willing, with prayer and fasting and working with them and all that good stuff, what's next?

And then, by the grace of God, they are saved.

Do you see that in the passage for yourselves?

So, the why of Bible studies is so that people ultimately can be saved, can know Jesus personally and accept him as their Lord and Savior.

And these are the practical steps by which it happens.

And so now we're going to spend a little bit of time in a group activity here.

It's something called the spiritual life map.

You're going to spend 5 minutes yourself, you know, so write this down.

You're going to do a little map of how did I come to call upon the name of the Lord?

You know, I was born, for example, I'll share mine, for example.

So I was born in Michigan, born to Josue Ynozant and Marie-Else Ynozant, you know, beautiful parents.
