Righteousness by Faith in the Book of First Samuel- Part 1

And I'll just say a few more things about myself so we can get to know each other.

And for me, it will be a pleasure to be able to talk to you as we fellowship during breaks and lunchtime and fellowship meals.

So we have a state called Sao Paulo and we have the capital of the state called also São Paulo.

I was born there and I was raised in Brazil and when I was 18 years old, I accepted the Adventist message.

I was not baptized at 18, but I accepted the Adventist message.

I was 18 and then 2 weeks later I went to Canada.

I moved to Canada and that's where I got baptized.

I received Bible studies and then I made the decision to be baptized.

So in 2006, just to be more precise, I accepted the call which I believe the Lord gave me the call to come to Heartland College to study here for a pastoral evangelism major.

I graduated in 2010, and the Lord put a burden in my heart to go back to South America, to Brazil, and bring to them what I learned here in this institution.

It was so precious, my time here, all the Bible classes, all the train I received here, that I wanted to start another institution there in Brazil.

And the Lord blessed, through his grace, we were able to establish that institution.

1 in Rio de Janeiro, established by Diego Silva, and another 1 in the state of Espirito Santo that myself and a team we started.

So we are going to be studying the Bible together this morning.

If you see in your bulletin, the title for our message is Righteousness by Faith, but where are we going to study the theme of righteousness by faith?

A good book for righteousness by faith usually is the book of Romans, right?

The book of Hebrews and other books of the Bible, the writings of Paul especially, but this morning and tomorrow morning I want to explore this theme from the book of 1 Samuel.

So the title, although the theme is Righteousness by Faith in the book of 1 Samuel, today the title of our message will be Lessons from the Life of King Saul.

We are going to study his life and draw lessons, which are very precious for our salvation, our relationship with the Lord.

I have a question for you, but just for you to think, you don't need to raise your hand or answer anything like that, but have you ever met someone that accepted the faith, the Adventist faith, was baptized, and later they went away from the faith, they left the church?

I think we all can relate to experience like that We have seen people accepting the faith and then they leave and I have noticed that usually when that happens We tend to say that person was not really converted Because if he was he would not have done that But I personally don't agree with that, because we as Seventh-day Adventists, we do not believe in 1 saved, always saved, do we?

So we are going to learn here in the book of 1 Samuel through the life of King Saul, that a truly converted person can actually depart from the faith if we don't watch and pray.

So let's open up our Bibles to 1st Samuel chapter 8.

I invite you to go there with me, 1st Samuel.

In chapter 8, you probably remember that Israel used to be a theocracy, right?

But the Israelites, they got tired of that situation.

They wanted to be like the other nations.

And then they requested the priest and prophet and judge Samuel to have a king to reign over them so they could be like the other nations.

Okay, so that's how we have Saul coming into the sacred history of the Israelites.

So I want to start our study in 1 Samuel 8 and verse 4.

1 Samuel 8 and verse 4, the Bible says, Then all the elders, in other words, the influential people of Israel, the leaders of the people, gathered themselves together and came to Samuel and to Ramah and said unto him, Behold thou art old, and that was true.

He was probably more than 80 years old already, Samuel.

Okay, We're going to study about Samuel tomorrow and learn also the theme of righteousness by faith in his life.

And your sons walk not in thy ways, and that was true also.

Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations there you have in the Bible God's people wanting to be like the world then in verse 5 I want you to see what happened over there.

The Bible says, and said unto him, Behold, I'm sorry, verse 7, I want you to see how Samuel responded to that request.

It says there, and the Lord said unto Samuel, hearken unto the voice of the people.

That was a strange command from the Lord because we know that it was not God's will for Israel to have A king over them, don't we?

But yet the Lord said, hearken to the voice of the people.

In other words, the Lord was basically trying to allow His people to reap the consequences of their choice in order for them to learn a lesson, a lesson of righteousness.

So let's continue to read verse 7 and says there, hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee for they have not rejected thee but they have rejected me that I should not reign over them." So there you see the Lord telling Samuel, assist the people to find a king for them, but God says to Samuel, make sure you warn them of the consequences of that choice.

You can hearken to the voice of the people, you can assist them to find another, a king over them, but make sure you warn them what are the consequences of having an earthly king reigning in Israel.

And then he did so, and I want you to see what the Israelites replied to the prophet Samuel in verse 19.

Chapter 8 of 1 Samuel, in verse 19, nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of who?

Keep in mind that Samuel was the prophet of that time, okay?

So when the people refused to hear the voice of Samuel, they were basically rejecting the spirit of prophecy.

They were basically in disobedience to God, in rebellion against God.

So they refused to hear the voice of the prophet Samuel and then it goes on to say in verse 19, and they said, Nay, but we will have a king over us.

Okay, so Samuel went to do his duty which was to assist the Israelites to find the best king as possible at that situation, even though it was not God's plan for them, at least it was not God's plan A for them.

So let's turn our Bibles now to the book of 1 Samuel and chapter 9, because what we find here in chapter 9 and chapter 10, Samuel is trying to find the right person to be king over Israel.

Saul was working in his farm with his family.

He decided to try to find the prophet so maybe the prophet could tell him where to find his horses.

And then I want you to see when he met the prophet Samuel, they had a conversation and the prophet revealed partially, not completely, but partially God's plan for his life.

And I want you to see how Saul, of course he was not king at this time, but how Saul responded when he heard God's plan for his life, at least partially of God's plan for his life.

And as we read verse 21, I want you to actually answer me.

So according to Saul's answer, was it a humble reply or attitude or was it a prideful attitude?

It says there, chapter 9, verse 21, our first Samuel, and Saul answered and said, Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin?

Wherefore then speakest thou so to me?" So what do you think?

You know, I come from the smallest tribe of Israel.

But God can use us when we are humble, when we do not trust in ourselves, when we are not self-sufficient.

So in chapter 10, they continue to interact, and I want you to see what happened in chapter 10 with Saul.

When Samuel was about to depart from Saul, we read in chapter 10 in verse 9 these words, and it was so that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him, notice this expression in the Bible, God gave him another what?

And all those signs came to pass that day.

So when the Bible says that God gave, saw another heart, What does it mean?

Another mind, yes, it's talking about the mind, but let's put it in more spiritual language.

What does it mean when God gave another heart to Saul?

That was a conversion experience, isn't it?

So can you see from the word of God that Saul, when he was first called to serve as a king, he was a converted person.

I want you to see what the Spirit of the Prophets says.

We are going to actually read first verse 10.

Let's continue to read in our Bibles, chapter 10 of 1st Samuel and now verse 10.
