Jerusalem Above is Our Mother

You have your Bibles tonight and we want to get right into our subject.

Galatians is a very fascinating book and the reason I want to get into it is because I want to flash back for a few minutes to not just to 1888 but I want to flash back all the way to the early church.

When you read, and I was listening to it again today as I was driving down here, and when you read Galatians you hear Paul gets pretty emotional.

It's probably 1 of the books that he shows more emotion in than anything and he's actually kind of upset and he has a right to be upset and the reason he says that he's upset is because he uses the word to the Galatians that they are perverting.

And if you look at the marginal reference, I'm using the New King James tonight, it says distorting, or they distort the gospel.

So it's very important that we get the gospel right.

And particularly as we come into the end of time, we need to have a good clear understanding.

I read something not too terribly long ago, maybe as long ago than I'd like to wish, that there were 4 or 5 different Gospels being shared in the Adventist Church.

I found that very fascinating, and they actually went down and they listed them.

I'm not going to do that for you tonight.

I may make some references to some of them as we go through some of this, but really the only gospel that I think we really should be teaching is the 1 that's in the 28 fundamental beliefs.

But people bring in their own nuances And it doesn't take much to distort the gospel of Christ.

So if you go right back to the beginning of Christianity, the reason Paul comes into this passionately is because he realizes that if it gets distorted, it's going to throw everything off.

Did the gospel get distorted with the early church eventually?

All you have to do is look at the dark ages.

All you have to do is look at the medieval and look at the persecution.

I mean, how can you imagine Jesus being happy about the Inquisition?

That's how distorted, and that's why it's so important that the gospel doesn't get distorted, and that's why it's important that we understand the scripture itself.

Let me go down to the Protestant Reformation.

What was the Protestant Reformation a reaction against?

It was a reaction against a distorted gospel that had brought all these abuses into the church and into the world and it wasn't just a church that was messed up the whole mindset of Europe was messed up and the reason we have the United States of America today the 1 that that gives gave us the constitution that we have, is because of the Protestant Reformation.

Without the Protestant Reformation, no United States of America.

I'm having problems with all these versions.

At 1 time I can remember King James and that was it.

Yes, I know it is a little, she's asked me a question so she's gonna get me down a rabbit track here just for a moment.

And maybe, I'll tell you what, let me do this.

Rather than let me get into the versions tonight, If you see me afterwards, I'll share some things with you.

Sometimes they can be a blessing and sometimes they can be not so much of a blessing.

But let me focus though back to this whole issue.

So we have the whole Protestant Reformation and there are 5 things that came out of the Reformation that deal with the gospel.

They usually start with sola, that's Latin meaning alone.

We believe, and I think as Seventh-day Adventists we certainly espouse this, we believe that it's Scripture alone, we call it sola scriptura, it's Scripture alone that gives us the foundation and becomes the final authority for the gospel of the Lord Jesus.

I think it's the first fundamental belief of the Seventh-day Adventist.

The next 1, and I may not have them in exact order, is what we call soul of faith.

And that our salvation is to glory of God alone.

Those are the 5 great points that came out of the Reformation that most of the Reformers agreed on as the Reformation came into being.

Why is the gospel such a hot topic always?

If you were the devil, wouldn't you want to distort it?

And that's why Paul comes through so passionately when Peter shows up in, I think it's in Antioch.

Peter, they're having a great time together, they're winning souls, preaching, and then a group of Jewish Christians, wonderful Christians by the way.

In fact, if you go to the book of Thessalonians, Paul will say you should imitate the churches in Judea.

Those are basically made up of Jewish Christians, not Gentile Christians.

But Peter shows up and then there's another group that shows up and they're very, very sincere.

They believe that you are saved, you are saved by Jesus and His sacrifice.

But then they think it's got, you've got to be saved by the sacrifice of Jesus plus something.

And Peter is a wonderful sanguine personality.

I'm looking forward someday to meet Peter.

I'd like to hear some of his stories first hand.

Any of you identify with Peter, you don't have to put your hand up.

But Peter can be impetuous and Peter is a sanguine and he loves people and he's always got something to say quickly, sometimes before maybe he thinks a little bit, see some of his interactions with Jesus.

Of course, he became a changed person after the denial, the crucifixion of Jesus, the resurrection of Jesus, became a changed person.

But even there, he's still human and he feels these are his friends.

These are people who've gone through persecution and difficulty and They've stood up for Jesus, but they still believe that you need to have this plus something.

And 1 of the things is that you didn't really eat with people who were uncircumcised.

Now, once they got circumcised, that'd be fine, but you didn't really do that.

They had a pretty passionate belief about that.

And Peter shows up at, this is fellowship lunch, I call it sometimes.

And all of a sudden, Peter who's been eating with the Gentiles, the uncircumcised Gentile Christians, all week long, I don't know if it was a week or not, but for the time he was there, all of a sudden these folks show up.

He goes over and he only sits with this other group.

And they were so passionate about this, the Bible says that even Barnabas, wonderful, solid, marvelous, Barnabas, 1 of the first persons who sold a piece of property and gave it to the church to help the poor.

And he says in Galatians that he confronted Peter to his face in front of everybody.

Paul also makes another declaration in Galatians.

Galatians, we're going to get into Romans and I don't have it, I cannot cover everything Galatians tonight.

We're just gonna, I'm gonna move into just a piece of it.

There's a lot in Galatians, but it was 1 of the earliest books that the Apostle Paul wrote, and he wrote Romans.

He wrote Romans towards the end of his journey, his life's journey, and it's a little bit more systematic than Galatians.

But Galatians has some pieces that sometimes you don't find either in Romans.

And I like Galatians because Paul is really pouring out his heart here.

So coming back to this whole issue of knowing the Gospel, Why is it important for us in the end of time to know the gospel?

I'm going to, before the week is done, and to understand the gospel.

I'm not here to tell you that you need to understand the gospel.

I'm passionate, however, about the gospel and I'm passionate about seeing people ready for Jesus to come.

I was just with some young people in a foreign country that I will not mention, wonderful, Adventist young people, And they were scared to death of the close of probation.

They said, how are we going to stand after the close of human probation?

I'll talk about that before we're all done here.
