The Law and Married to Another

Romans chapter 7, those verses that were read for scripture, I want to take a look at them, are some of the most misunderstood verses in Christendom.

And even in our own church, at times I am kind of interested in what I hear.

Now I'm not going to be terribly politically correct today, but I hope to be biblically correct.

We always want to be sensitive and kind, But the Lord uses some, sometimes you say metaphors or illustrations, to try to help us to understand how he wants to relate to us.

Now I want to tell you that he created us.

We do not believe that God just created us for the fun of it, wound us up and walked away and said, well, that was fun, that was nice.

God created us because He wanted to interact with us.

And I'd like to suggest to you, He has a right to that because He is our creator.

In Him we live and breathe and have our being.

1 of the pictures that he uses is a father with children.

Another picture that he uses is marriage.

When we get married, men, how much of the day...

How much of the day does your wife enter your thoughts?

How much of the day does your husband enter your thoughts?

You cannot be married and not be thinking about that person in 1 way or the other.

We think together about what is going to be next.

God wants to intertwine his life with our life.

We sometimes hire ministerial students that are unmarried.

This is where I'm going to get in some trouble probably.

I tell the ministerial department, it's a little bit tongue in cheek, you have to understand that, so I hope somebody doesn't take this and some scandalous online magazine and make something out of it.

I tell this ministerial department, we hire them unmarried.

It's your business to make sure they get married somewhere along the lines.

Because the Churches normally want a married couple.

There's nothing wrong with singleness, so don't get me wrong.

Like I said, I'm not gonna, if you're single here, this isn't against anything.

If God's called you to be single, the Apostle Paul says that's a good thing.

And sometimes we say as we interview young people for ministry, etc.

Sometimes we say behind the scenes, he married well.

But I've seen in my ministry through the years, I've seen, I'm talking about ministers now, I've seen his wife make or break him.

Now the reason I'm using this illustration is, is that relationship important?

And God is trying to help us to understand that his relationship with us is very, very important.

And if you make God your partner, he can make or break you.

And he's going to make you, not break you.

Might break your heart so that He can make you and reconstitute you.

But He's a marvelous partner to have your life intertwined with.

This passage, and I'm gonna start with verse 1, you have your Bibles to open to chapter 7.

Do you not know, brethren, that I speak to those who know the law, that the law has dominion over man as long as he lives?

Have you ever seen a sheriff in a graveyard standing before a tombstone saying, okay, now, I'm here, I've got my handcuffs, I've got my gun, I've got a warrant for your arrest, and I'm here to arrest you?

If he's dead, the law has no more control over him.

So keep that in the back of your mind as we go through here.

I'm not here today to talk about marriage and divorce and remarriage.

Now this may have some implications to that, but That's not my mission this morning.

Verse 2, For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he...

But if the husband dies, she's released from the law of her husband.

So then if while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress.

But if her husband dies, she's free from the law so that she's no adulteress, though she has married another man.

Verse 4, Therefore, my brethren, You also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another, to him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.

Because those words, dead to the law, and they have similar language as we go down.

I've had, I've run into my precious evangelical friends, he says, oh, we don't have to worry about God's law.

I've even heard it within the adventure, well, you know, the law is kind of, we're dead to the law.

So I'm going to give us an illustration this morning to try to help us understand this.

It's not an illustration my wife likes, but I haven't found a better 1.

You'll kind of understand why she doesn't like it, but until I get a better 1, I'm going to use it.

There was once a woman who was married to a man And like all young people, she thought he was wonderful and marvelous, and they got married.

But after she got married to him, she found out that he wasn't so marvelous.

He began to make her life just miserable.

He'd verbally abuse her, cut her down, Tell her how worthless she was, how she was no good.
