Stealing Lucifer’s Playground - Part 1

So good morning and happy Monday, everyone.

I work with ARTV, which I even have a slide for that, which is the Adventist Review's new on-demand media platform.

And as a free welcoming gift, here's information on how you can get more information.

And so ARTV is kind of our equivalent of Netflix of sorts.

It's on-demand programming that's Aventus, All of it's Aventus, so it's not like PureFlix where you have to spit out the seeds and wish that they didn't say that grandma's in heaven when she dies or whatever.

How many people in this room have an iPhone?

How many people in this room have an Android smartphone?

How many people in this room have an Apple TV?

So if you have any of those devices, how about just a web browser in general, in some form or fashion?

Yes, if you have a web browser, then you can access ARTV through our website, ARTVnow.com.

There is a section where you have to sign up, but it's free, It costs you nothing.

It's just Vimeo makes us have some form of login credentials.

You just sign up, you give your email, whatever, but you get all the stuff for free.

And the cool thing is, if you're watching a video, you start in your car, and then you go inside, you can actually resume what you were watching in your car on your Apple TV or your other devices.

You can actually catch up from wherever you were reading or watching.

It'll pick it from where you left off on the next device that you pick up on.

So anyway, we're really excited for this.

We believe that digital media is the new publishing work, so we're sticking to our roots of being a publishing organization, but we're moving into digital media.

If you just type Adventist Review into your podcasting site of choice, whatever your platform is, you can also access that.

We just released a documentary that I'm actually going to be screening here on probably Thursday on the Mark of the Beast with Mark Finley.

How many people have watched or listened to that, the documentary we just did on Mark of the Beast?

So how many people actually receive the Adventist Review in the mail.

How many people get the Adventist Review?

So when you get the Adventist Review from this month all the way through the end of the year, they have a series called Digging Deeper, and we're basically covering different topics of Adventism, our core beliefs, but digging deeper in those.

This month the topic is the Mark of the Beast.

So Mark Finley, I think, wrote an article for it.

We have a podcast with Mark Finley talking on it and we also just made a documentary where Mark Finley's meeting with 5 millennials, an atheist, a Muslim, a Catholic, an evangelical, and a pastor's kid and an atheist.

Next week's topic, or next month's topic is actually going to be on the Godhead.

The AR is certainly also indicating that you are affiliated with the Review and Error publishing.

So it's Adventist Review and we're not a television station, but it just kind of gives the idea.

But yeah, this is all run by the Adventist Review.

So ARTV is the Adventist Review's new on-demand media publishing wing.

So anywho, if you want to find more information, you can go to our website and access part.

There's nature programming, there's health programming, all of it's family-friendly, all of it's free.

If you're watching our program and you really like it, there's a share button on whatever device you're on to share with your friends.

Again, it's free for them, so when it tells them to log in or make a log in, there is no charge.

That's not, they don't have a charge, so it's free.

A full launch in the last year, but they started before that.

There's 1 more thing that there's a program that I'm actually a part of that isn't affiliated with ARTV at all, but I'm talking about it anyway.

If you have the Facebook, you can follow us at RQRA3ABN.

It's a new program developed for young people dealing with hard heart issues, unhealthy views of God, unhealthy views of ourselves.

It airs 2 weeks from yesterday on 3ABN, but it's also being released on Facebook and YouTube.

It's a Q&A format dealing with real issues that young people are contending with that folks don't wanna talk about, giving Christ-centered answers.

It's called Raw Questions, Relevant Answers.

And if you'd like to tell people to find out more where our promo is and all that stuff, just RQRA3VM, you can find it there.

I think they have run articles in their magazine about it, and they've had some little blurbs on it on their TV station, too.

But anyway, it's another program that's going to be released in 2 weeks, and if people have questions they'd like to submit, as this is for young people, so 15 to 30, if they'd like to submit questions, we actually have a form on that page where they can go and submit any questions and it's all anonymous.

We just asked for an age, a state, and a gender.

So they can ask questions anonymously and get help.

So all that being said, today's topic is Snapchat selfies and salvation.

Then with the topic of digital media and specifically social media for our first 1.

And so what I'd like to do is begin with the word of prayer and then we will start this morning's presentation.

Father in heaven I thank you for the privilege to pray to see our need and I just ask that your Holy Spirit would descend upon this place that you administer to us that we would better understand the mission field that exists before us with digital media, and also the pitfalls and how to succeed in navigating it.

So I just pray that you would give great wisdom in this presentation to all of us and that you would bless us indeed.

All right, So I've given all those introductions.

What I'd like to do is go to the book of Acts.

Did you know that Paul got the gospel to go viral 2, 000 years ago?

For those who may not be acquainted with the term, something going viral is basically something online getting immense popularity and everyone knows about it, everyone has seen it.

So Paul gets the gospel to go viral in Acts chapter 19.

Father in heaven, thank you for this privilege to be able to join together and talk about something that we believe is of the greatest importance, and so we just pray that you would bless Jamie with discernment, with wisdom, to contextualize what needs to be shared, and that you would just bless her indeed, and that you would bless us with information that we need as well.

Yeah, and it's great to be able to speak to you guys.

So just a little bit background about me.

So I have about 12 years of experience in digital strategies.

I spent 5 years at the Baltimore Symphony as their digital communications manager.

And then I went on to the Smithsonian Associates and actually ran their social media and email communication system for about 5 years before being recruited for the North American Division.

And I'm actually part of a newer department that started about 2 years ago.

I'm the social media aspect of the department.

And so a big part of my job, about 50% of my job is running campaigns for the North American Division, special campaigns, working for different departments, helping different conferences and unions to kind of optimize what they're doing.

And then the other 50% of what I do is creating resources and training because I firmly believe that the next great awakening is going to be a digital 1.

We can reach the world, but we're just distracted.

And we're using them for things that don't matter.

And so we've created a whole resource website and you'll see the URL for that throughout this presentation.

There's videos, there's training courses.

We add new content almost weekly when I'm not traveling.

We're coming up with a couple of new resources, actually in the next couple of weeks, we're gonna have a whole series on YouTube Ministries.

We actually partnered with Justin Toe for that.

And then we're also gonna do some guidelines and stuff for search engine optimization on your website.

So bulk of our focus has been social media but we're starting to expand because we understand that there is a great need for this type of training and resources in the context of our faith and what we're trying to do for our shared mission.

Ultimately, social media is about connecting with others and it speaks to this basic human need to connect and to share.

I'm going to share some very practical tips for effectively reaching your audience and maximizing your engagement.

Gonna talk a little bit about ads and engaging in something that I call member care or community care, how the church can be the voice that answers back because we know people are Googling for God, they're Googling for, you know, their sincerest needs and answers.

We have a powerful message that needs to get out there.

So, social media is a vital tool for accomplishing our mission in the 21st century.

And my purpose is to simply empower and equip you to use technology to effectively communicate your message and meet the needs of your community.

I already talked a little bit about who I am.

So this year, it's estimated that about 33% of the world's population is going to be on social media.

Depending on how we respond to this, this is either a huge opportunity or a huge challenge.

I believe that if we commit to be digital disciples and use our digital influence that we have, and it doesn't matter whether you're talking to 4 people or 45, 000 people, you have influence, but together we can amplify the 3 angels message online with a loud voice.

And as I said before, the problem is we've just been distracted and using it more for division.

So we know there's a great need for resources and training.

So hopefully this session will give you powerful resources, helpful resources, and get you started on the right track.

So just going to talk about a couple of managing work accounts.

Now, some of you might be individuals, you might be doing stuff for the church, maybe some of you do work for like an official ministry or conference, these are just really good principles.

And as I told D before, I'm going to send him this presentation, and he's going to make sure it gets shared with everyone and is available to everyone.

So you'll have this as kind of a checklist.

What I do, because so much of my world is on social media, I actually have 2 separate Facebook accounts and I do this with all of my work accounts are separate from my personal social media.

And that's just to help create that work-life balance because I really believe in guarding the edges of my day and you know making sure there's balance especially for someone like me whose entire job is online and For Facebook pages.

So if you have an official page for your ministry or your church, it's absolutely necessary that you have more than 1 person as an admin on that page.

And this stems back from when I was actually at the symphony.

There was a situation, I believe it was the Colorado Symphony, where they had a gentleman who basically had all the keys and all the passwords for all of the back-end API of the website and the CRM and all of the basically information tools that they needed to conduct business online and that man was literally hit by a bus and so What happened after that they were locked out of everything and they had to get a company to basically hack in And for them that was a lot of financial loss.

For us on a church level, it could mean that we lose access to our communication tools if we don't have a backup admin if something happens to someone.

So it's just ideal that you have multiple people with full administrative rights on your page to prevent any kind of lockout or any kind of those situations because it's really difficult to work with Facebook to regain access.

Now never connect work profiles to private email addresses or even personal work email addresses.

This is for official accounts, whether it's like a church account or some kind of ministry or business.

What this means is your personal Gmail account should not be how you access those accounts.

If you work for an organization that has email servers, you can actually set up something like a dedicated social media address that many people have the access to.

So in the case of the North American Division, we have socialmedia at nadadventist.org.

Many people have access to that email inbox.

So if something were to happen to me or someone else, or we got locked out, IT can actually go in there and regain access to our accounts.

And then you can connect, once you create an email like that, that's just sort of a standard email for your organization's social media accounts, you can connect to things like Twitter and Instagram and Hootsuite to it.

And if you want to know some more, we have a document online and there's a URL that just gives a whole series of best practices and guidelines.

You're welcome to take a picture of any of the screens as we go through the presentation.

Just a brief thing about copyright laws so we can avoid trouble.

These are important, just some highlights.

Again, there's more information about this on our website.

But the thing to remember is just because it's on the internet, It doesn't necessarily mean it's in the public domain, so you can't claim it as your own.

It's generally okay to share content that's on social media.

That is, of course, the purpose of social media, but we shouldn't share something in such a way that infringes upon somebody else's intellectual property, meaning you write a really great blog post, I copy it onto my website and claim I wrote it and then share it from me.

So it's really about making sure that credit is given to where credit is due.

Understand that you're giving up some of your ownership rights when you post online.

I believe like Instagram for example actually owns your images.

I've never actually seen them use them, but technically that is written into the terms and conditions.

And when you use post, when you create post, make sure you use either public domain, fair use or purchase stocked images to avoid copyright infringement.

And we actually have resources on our website of where you can get free and low cost images that are high quality that I would recommend people look at.

And again, we have more resources online.

So now, what you really came here for is strategy and how can we take this tool that the devil has used to distract us, to pit us against each other and oftentimes cause depression and cause all these other issues, when it's really meant to connect us.

And it's our job as Christians to connect with people and to connect with God.

And so if you want to get results, you need a well planned out plan.

You need to know why you're on social media and what you're trying to achieve.

Because oftentimes, you know, we get on social media and we think, because I need to be on social media.

You have to set a goal and then work towards those goals instead of just kind of doing it at random.

Because if you do it at random or you treat social media like an afterthought, it's going to perform like an afterthought.

And so, and these principles I'm going to discuss are scalable to any size ministry.

And so I hope we, when you walk away from this presentation, you'll just have a basic understanding of framework and strategy.

The first things you want to, and we'll break this down in coming slides, but the first things you want to do is determine your key performance goals.

You know, first of all, you have to determine what your goal is and then how to measure that goal.

You can't reach everyone all the time, so you have to focus and target your messages to a particular audience.

I just ask that you would bless us with your presence, that you give wisdom and discernment in an area that I believe is a new 1040 window for Adventism.

And so I just pray that you would bless us with the information necessary to be successful and to be able to make a difference in this area.

I actually need to turn this light off because you can't see that as well.

Looking at principles and success stories within Adventism of people who are doing things well and resources that you can glean from that.

So we're going to come back to this question towards the end of when do I get my kids involved, if I get them involved in some of these things.

How many people have not been to 1 of these seminars yet on this topic?

Some more information about what we're gonna talk about probably tomorrow or Friday, about who I am partnering with, ARTV.

It's a hub for Adventist programming that's short, shareable to the point.

It's all internet-based, so we'll come back to that later, probably tomorrow.

All right, so how do we engage in social media in a safe, responsible, and evangelistic way?

First of all, social media, what we should be doing is seeking to grow relationships and friendships by connecting with people, but not growing a love and a tolerance for the things that ensnare them, right?

Finding ways, I'm sure all of us have someone in our life that there are things that they do we're not comfortable with, wouldn't be caught dead doing.

But we do realize that God in his great mercy has brought that person into my life for a reason.

Social media is no different in that sense.

From there, what is it that gets their gears turning, right?

What is it that they care about, that they're passionate about?

And find ways to address those areas of interest from a Christ-centered perspective.

When you're posting, think about what you're saying and how people who follow you or are friends with you would respond, Right?

Now, we don't want to get analysis paralysis to the point that we think, oh man, like if I talk about, if I mention Jesus are they gonna get offended?

But you can contextualize what you say and just think about it.

Are you just gonna get on the internet and complain about women's ordination stuff when you have a bunch of non-adventist followers.

Let alone the fact you shouldn't be complaining about that stuff on social media anyway.

Get over it, whatever your position is on that topic.

So anyway, whatever the topic could be, are you posting about politics?

But whatever that situation may be, whatever you're posting about, think about the people who follow you and are friends with you.

Am I saying things that are very esoteric, very limited to Adventism, that they would know nothing about?

Like, you're talking about general conference, you're talking about great controversy, they may not know what you're saying, right?

So, if you're posting things regularly, don't ostracize them with the language that you're using, if that makes sense.

So, for instance, on Facebook, there's this little section here, when you're getting ready to write a post, here's where you would write it, if you're just making a post.

But if you were to, there's this thing here that says public, depending upon what you've made your settings to be when you started, but in a general sense, if all your posts go public, there's this option that says, who should see this?

Because if you have a Facebook profile that's completely public, people can just search your name in Google, and I mean if you don't have like a name that's ridiculously common, my name would be easier maybe than yours would be potentially, because it's not a common name, But if they search it on Google and it says Facebook, DeCasper, Facebook, whatever, and they click that link, even if they don't have a Facebook page, they can see what it is that you've posted there if your page is set to fully public.

And all those privacy settings are in Facebook under your settings tab that you can deal with.

My point is, let's say that you're gonna post something that's very Adventist in nature, but you would prefer or...

So we at ARTV, we just released a documentary last Friday on the Mark of the Beast.

Let's say that you have Catholic family members who just aren't ready for that right now, but you do want to share this documentary.

What you can do is you can click either just your friends see it, but if your family count is that and they're Catholic and it's going to be a problem right now, they're not ready for that yet, you can go to Friends Except.

And in this area, it shows all of your friends.

And you can search for them by typing their name or you can scroll all the way through them if you have a billion of them, it'll take a while.

And you can check each of their names so that whenever you post this, they never see it.

Whether it's right when you post, whether it's later, Facebook specifically hides that individual post from those individuals, and you can tailor that list as much as you want.

Now, if That list for you is the same group of people all the time, and if you get a new friend eventually that falls in that category, you can add them, and it stays that same list.

If you wanna do a separate list, you'll have to delete your old 1 and make a new 1, if that makes sense.

But anyway, it's a way that you can actually hide posts from folks who they're just not ready for what you had to say right now in a particular area, right?

Let's hope that it's, you know, for spiritual reasons and not nefarious reasons.

So when it says friends except, that means all of my friends will see it except for, and then you start picking who those list of exceptions are.

But if 1 of them comes off that list, you can just uncheck them.

You don't have to create a new list, correct?

And most people, probably your setting is default.

So people can't see anything on your page except for people who are friends with you.

Content is what matters most and use what gear you have.

I'm gonna pick up on this a little bit more later, but content is king.

So let's say that you can't make this killer short film that's made in a cinematic format.

The content that you're sharing will still be able to draw people's attention, right?
