Consider Him

Our subject this morning is entitled, Consider Him.

Him is a male pronoun, but we'll get to that in just a moment.

If you would just bow your heads with me before we begin.

My Father in heaven, what a privilege it is to stand here before your people and to share a message that you have given to us in your word.

Lord, I pray that you would bless your people for Jesus Christ's sake, Lord, that you would be lifted up and glorified and that we would be energized and transformed by the message that we receive from your word.

Hide me behind Your cross is my prayer in Jesus' name, amen.

If you have your Bibles, and I'm gonna very much assume that you do, please take them out and let's take a look at Hebrews chapter 12 as we identify who is the him for our subject this morning, consider him.

Not coming to church with your Bible would be like not coming to church with your underclothing.

I can actually prove that from the Bible, if you can believe that.

Ephesians 6.14 says, stand therefore having your loins girt about with what?

Now can anyone connect with me a Bible verse that talks about the Bible itself is truth.

And this is what is supposed to be the first thing we put on as a spiritual soldier for Christ.

John 17, 17 says, sanctify them through thy truth.

This is the first layer, the first article of clothing that we would put on as Christians.

And so there again, not coming to church without our Bible is like not coming to church with our underwear on.

So anyway, I'm not trying to be cute, I'm trying to make a serious point.

Bring your Bibles to church, carry them with you at all times.

It is our life, it is the source of our truth and knowledge and understanding of God.

All right, let's identify, thank you Elder Press, let's identify the hymn in Hebrews chapter 12.

As if you have the King James Version, please read with me.

The Bible says, wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses.

They're all the people mentioned in the chapter before, the famous faith chapter, who conquered, overcame through faith and trusting, believing in the Word of God.

It says, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us.

And let us run with patience the race that is set before us.

Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.

He is the author of the message and the word of God, and he is the finisher and the 1 that will complete the message we find in the word of God.

Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him did what?

As we have our communion service today and we reflect back on what Jesus did for us at the cross, it says there in the scriptures in Hebrews 12 too that Jesus went through with this incredible sacrifice that was made for us for the joy that was set before him.

What is that joy that was set or placed before him?

I would submit to you this morning that joy is seeing lost sinners be saved eternally and living with him.

That includes all of us here, you and me.

You were the joy that was set before Jesus.

He says, I will endure and go through with the agony and the horrors of the cross and separation from my father for the joy of knowing that people can choose to be saved by the merits and benefits of my sacrifice and live with me forevermore.

The joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

You already knew, but we see in the context of verse 2, it is looking unto Jesus.

This verse tells us why we should consider him.

For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself.

Now the word contradictions is kind of a more polite and not as intense word.

If you look at the Greek for that word for contradictions against him, it actually is the word for high-handed rebellion, for hostility and rebellion, contradiction.

Contradiction just sounds, oh, they were opposed to what he was doing.

Not just opposed, but in a rebellious sense, Jesus went against the contradiction of sinners against himself, and it says, why should we consider what Jesus went through?

It says, lest we be wearied and faint in our minds.

That we would become weary and burdened down with the effects and the cares of this sinful life, and our minds would become faint, and we would not receive the benefits and the power that God wants us to have through his sacrifice for us.

Well this morning I just want to consider briefly, and I do mean briefly, 3 accomplishments of what Jesus has done for providing for our salvation in the great plan of redemption.

Did you know there's no really greater theme or subject that we can put our minds to than to think about the plan of our salvation and redemption.

Well, Jesus is at the heart and center of the plan of our salvation.

And so to consider the plan of redemption is to consider Jesus and the role that Jesus has played from the very beginning in our salvation.

So I just would like to look at 3 accomplishments, tremendous accomplishments in what Jesus has done for us in our salvation.

Consider him, by the way, the word consider in the Greek also means to carefully weigh from beginning to end a matter and attentively look at and carefully think about in all of its parts and pieces a particular subject.

So consider just doesn't mean like I went to the store and I considered do I want chocolate ice cream or vanilla ice cream.

It's not a minor consideration, it means to think deeply and attentively on a particular matter.

And of course, our subject is consider him, and the him is Jesus Christ.

Well, let's look at accomplishment number 1.

If you have your Bibles, I hope you do, Romans 5 and verse 18 and 19.

Romans chapter 5, verses 18 and 19, accomplishment number 1 that we find from our Savior Jesus Christ.

Romans 5, and we'll look at verses 18 and 19.

I know I have some note takers out there and I do have a lot of Bible verses.

I'm not going to get to read them all, but I appreciate note takers.

They want to go back and reflect and continue studying and thinking about the message that's presented.

The Bible says, Therefore as by the offense of 1, judgment came upon how many?

Who is the 1 that because of their offense, judgment, condemnation came upon all?

Because of Adam's sin, judgment or condemnation came upon all.

But notice how it follows up and says even so by the righteousness of 1 the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life as In the results of Adam we receive the we receive the effects of Adam's sin, the results of his sin, which is transmitted down to us.

But Jesus Christ, by making salvation possible, has provided through his 1 sacrifice, the benefits are experienced and shared by all humanity.

For as by 1 man's disobedience, many were made sinners.

In fact, a better translation would say many became sinners.

And I could talk more about that point there, but it'd be better to say many became sinners because sin is a choice.

Your sin is something that takes place when you choose to sin, when you have an understanding and knowledge of accountability of what is right and wrong.

Many became sinners because of the results of inheriting Adam's fallen, sinful nature and chose to follow and disobey God.

All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
