Christian Courtship for Marriage

Father, for your Spirit we thank you and for this opportunity once again we thank you.

We ask that you would come now and be our teacher.

Help us to recognize that no matter how long we have been around the things of God, it's not really possible for us to understand godly things without the Holy Spirit.

And so we ask for your Holy Spirit to come now and bathe us in his presence, that we be able to understand, and we leave here better than the way that we came in.

So in our last session we talked about going from friendship to courtship and we dealt with some broad principles of relationship that we thought could work in pretty much any kind of relationship, whether it's a romantic relationship or just a friendship type 1.

But in this session, we're going to be talking about going from courtship to marriage.

And there's a particular aspect of that that we want to deal with and that has to do with sexual intimacy.

And the reason we chose that is because of something that we alluded to at the end of this last session.

If you are in a relationship with someone, by the way, you know what?

Do we have anybody in here who's married?

Anyone in here who is currently in a relationship with a boyfriend or girlfriend?

And then everyone else is single, not in a relationship at all?

The principles that we're going to be dealing with today are germane to courtship and marriage, but I still believe that there is a call for all Christians to be sexually pure.

And so sexual purity is not something that is lost because you are a single person.

It's actually very important, but I'm not going to be dealing with it from a single perspective per se, but I do think the principles still apply and it's going to be important for you to understand it.

So the screen didn't work for us the last time and it was messing up again just now.

What it means though is that I need you to look up some text for me and I want you to read them when I get to them.

So I want to ask now, will somebody get and find Genesis 1, 27 and 28?

Raise your hand if you're going to find that 1.

When we get to it, we'll ask you to read it.

When we get to that, we'll ask you to do that.

Yeah, so if we have time, somebody find 1 Corinthians 6, 15 to 18.

Okay, so we want to begin by giving 4 principles for biblical sexuality.

And let me start with a presupposition again.

We believe that sexuality is not a by-product of sin.

We believe that God programmed Adam and Eve with biblical sexuality.

Because most of us were introduced to sexual things from a negative and unbiblical perspective.

Very few of us had parents who sat us down and opened the Bible and showed us sexuality from the beginning as our first introduction to sexual things.

Usually they did that but they did it to undo something that we had seen already.

Either somebody bought a magazine to class or you at your friend's house or something on TV.

There was some negative, sinful, bad, disgusting way that you were introduced to sex.

In the last session we talked about baggage and this is 1 of the form of baggage I have.

So it can just be that you have in your mind that sexuality or sexual things are all negative, nasty, disgusting.

I mean, when we kiss at home, my kids are like, why are you saying And we're not kissing, you know, we're just a little peck or something.

But I don't want my children thinking that that is nasty in marriage.

For a husband and wife to peck each other on the...

I'm not talking about kids looking at your parents, that's not what I'm talking about.

I'm just talking about physical touch being a negative thing.

And so sometimes, and I'm trying to get us to bring that baggage to the forefront so that we can leave here and leave the baggage in the room because sometimes we can go into relationships, marriage, with negative attitudes about sex, which can cause our relationship to actually be damaged in marriage because of our negative look on sex.

To that point, and I don't know if you dealt with it in the last session or if you're going to deal with it in this session, but there's a high number of young girls who were sexually molested.

So it's not just the idea that they saw it in a book or they saw it on TV.
