How to Record Broadcast-Ready Sermons

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your many blessings, the opportunity to meet with fellow believers this week.

And this is the first of the seminars that I have and that are going on this week.

And I appreciate the chance to share what I know and hopefully learn from these people as well.

Help us to always remember that we are Your witnesses in everything we do and say.

I work at Strong Tower Radio 3 days a week.

The rest of the time I'm still moving because I recently bought a place just north of the radio station, so it wasn't an hour drive each way.

What we're going to do today, hopefully, is give you ideas and get you thinking about ways to create audio files Because I don't know how every church is set up for audio, I can't tell you specifically how to make things work, but I can make suggestions that may help work better.

I have several audio files to give you ideas of things to look out for in your recordings.

And I don't know how many people here actually do the audio for your church.

Well, currently we actually don't record audio.

We record video and stream, and we do broadcast over our low power station here.

We just clip the tape to the DVDs and give to the people.

We can do a thumb drive or we do a wire cast, which we record video in.

So is it primarily a push button system, or do you have to do any manipulation while it's running, usually?

We use CD, and you just have to push a couple of buttons, and it should play.

When I was in Massachusetts for 7 years, I recorded directly into my laptop, into a program called Pro Tools.

Take a home, mix it down to take out the long, dead spots, whatever.

And part of that is using some type of audio editing software as a recorder.

And then you've got a little bit of control of what comes across.

Part of the audio files, hopefully, that work that I want to play for you is from 1 of our local churches that when you're listening to the sermon in the sanctuary, it's perfectly fine.

What comes across on the recording is something a little bit different, and I don't know how long it's been going on, and I'm not sure that they know about it even though we've tried to warn them that this is going on.

So these are some of the things I'm going to try and give you some ideas.

And if you've been at this for a while, you've probably seen and heard some of these things already.

But I'm just trying to give you as much information as you can, because we've currently got 1 guy that does most of our audio editing.

I don't know if you've met Dan Bailey or not, but this guy listens to sermons all day long and he is really amazing at what he does.

The problem that we run into sometimes is like the recordings from this 1 church.

He gets into it, and he's working away at it 2, 3 hours into it, and then he runs into dropouts.

And he's meticulous enough that he will search through the recording to find the word that dropped out, cut it, and splice it back in.

But we're talking a bunch of time added to make that work.

And recently he had a sermon that he did that throughout the whole thing, and he got towards the end and it really went nuts.

It just, half, the last 5 minutes were pretty much wasted.

And, You know, we all like sermons to end early, but not because you can't understand.

So from a broadcast point of view, it just won't work for us.

So that's really what I'm here to do is try and give you ideas, listening, and things like that.

So how many of you here are sharing your sermons with us?

Well, I'm from Virginia, so we're nowhere near you.

If we can send it, I'm sure the guys will do it.

They've done it all digital now, so it kind of lost me a lot of the stuff.

I did everything with the VHS and everything.

Yeah, we have an FTP site, and if you don't already know about it, it's a pretty easy drop and go type situation for you.

We take video but we want the audio so that we can do our thing.

We can rip the audio from video, but that adds another layer of fun for us.

So yeah, we're just looking for more material.

I went to 1 of the district meetings with the pastors and I told them, I'm here to beg.

So I've got to figure out a new way to get their attention, evidently.

It was funny, 1 of the pastors in the group, he says, you know, somebody came up to me and said, I heard your sermon on Strong Tower Radio.

I'm going, we're not trying to change your sermons.

Just out of curiosity, with the students, do you have any length requirements?

Or is it, I mean, do they need to fit into a certain hour, half hour window?

Or is it you take what you can get and go with it?

We have 30 minute spots, 40, 45, and up to 57 is about the max.

And we'll make it work as much as possible.

We do have themes that we try to go by and then of course the seasonals and that kind of thing.

We will put them away if we don't necessarily get them on the air so that we can use them at the specified time.

So we'll take anything we can get our hands on.

Speaking of editing recording software, we use Gold Wave currently at the radio station.
