Facebook Marketing - Part 1: Would Jesus Be on Facebook

Thank you for your love, your kindness, and your mercy in our lives and giving us a burden to reach others.

Father, thank you for the tools that you give us with technology that help us to reach more people for Your glory.

And Father, I pray that now as we talk about reaching souls, we do not miss the point that we need You.

You are the powerful 1, the 1 who gives us the encouragement and the ability to win souls.

We can use technology, we can use persuasion and marketing, but at the end of the day, if you're not convicting the heart, nothing will change.

I'll share a little bit of my story with you guys.

It relates to marketing a little bit, ironically.

And then, Like I said, we'll get into going through building a strategy.

So I've always been kind of an entrepreneur.

I've always been someone who's tried to make money and things like that.

I didn't grow up in a Christian household.

She struggled with alcohol and drug addiction.

Lived in government housing and all that stuff.

So when I wanted a new bike or the latest game system or whatever it may be, I'd try to find ways to make money.

And so I was that kid going to school with his backpack filled with gum and candy.

And between classes, I was trying to sell it to the other students and things like that.

And I'm from Traverse City, so we have the Cherry Festival.

And While all the other kids are getting their parents money and then going on the rides and enjoying the carnival, I'd be pulling around a wagon full of poppin' water, selling it to everybody and that type of thing.

So to me, I think it was kind of a way to, as an outlet of creativity, of doing something productive.

And so I always enjoyed this idea of having a business and things like that.

And as I got older, the outlet changed a little bit.

I started using drugs and alcohol and finding a lot of my escape in worldly things.

And so this led me to a really dark place And I was a junior in high school.

And he knew that I wasn't going on the right path.

And so he wanted to be intentional in reaching out to me.

And so he recommended, you know, and I didn't have any plans after I was a junior.

I didn't have any plans of, you know, going to college or anything like that.

So he came up to me and he introduced me to this book called Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.

How many of you guys have heard of that book or read it?

Yeah, so that book, you know, it kind of breaks down the different ways of making money, you know, being an employee, owning a business as someone who's self-employed, having a big business where you're building assets, and then ways to invest.

So to me, this really opened up my mind of different ways of making money and business opportunities and things like that.

And so From that point on, I started searching, going online and Googling things and trying to figure it all out, learning about business.

And 1 day, I had a friend who called me up.

She's like, hey, you have to jump on the phone with my friend.

He's got this crazy business opportunity.

I'm 16, 17 at the time, so I'm really naive and I thought it was a really great opportunity.

And so I ended up talking to this person and it ended up being a multi-level marketing company.

How many of you guys have ever heard of multi-level marketing before?

You know, like Amway or Avon or Merakay, something like that, right?

So this 1 was a health and wellness company that sold a healthy energy drink, if there is such a thing, right?

So they sold a healthy energy drink, and I was really naive, I thought I was gonna make a bunch of money, so I took all my money at the time, it was like $500, and I bought their starter pack.

And from there, They said, all you have to do is make a big list of everyone you know, invite them to your house, and you're going to give them all the product, they're going to try it, and then you're going to make a bunch of money and get rich.

And I was like, okay, that sounds really easy.

I invited everybody over, told them about the business, they drank all my energy drinks, left and nobody signed up.

So you know it was, obviously I didn't get rich right there, but I was naive, I really was determined, I was a little bit stubborn and so I wanted to figure this thing out.

I wanted to figure out how I was going to make money with this business model.

So after all my family members and friends pretty much told me no, I went to the internet and that's where I discovered the power of online marketing.

And so in online marketing at that time, this was about 2012, 2013.

And so Instagram was just becoming a really popular platform.

It was really blowing up, getting a lot of traction.

And so usually when social media platforms start out, they don't have as many terms and conditions and policies in place where there's so many restrictions.

So back then, I was able to hook this software up that would go out on my behalf and engage with other people's accounts.

They'd go like their photos and comment on their photos and follow them and stuff like that.

So what this would do is it would get their attention.

Then they'd go to my account and they'd see that I had pictures of the product and these different things.

And there was a link in it and a headline that said, I want to make money and get healthy.

So they click the link and it would take them to a simple 1 page website.

And on that website, it had a video that broke down the opportunity, the business opportunity, and talked about the products.

And if they were interested they could put their name, email, and phone number.

This is a simple landing page to generate leads.

And what would happen is when they press the submit button, it would go to my email, I'd get a notification, and then I could call them up.

I had a script that I had been working off of.

So I was generating leads for myself, I'd call them up, they were warm leads, they were already qualified, and I'd close them.

So I started doing this, you know, learning all the technical side and generating leads and learning how to sell.

And this is really where it started for me.

So I've been in online advertising since about 2012, 2013.

And when I started moving up that company and started making more money and building my network and all this stuff, they start giving you books, right?

They start giving you books and training courses for personal development.

So I started reading books from Brian Tracy and Zig Ziglar and Earl Nightingale and all these guys and Some other ones And these books were seemingly harmless in the beginning because it talked about a lot of good things, I thought, thinking positively and creativity and dealing with people and all these different things.

So I actually experienced a little bit of life-changing, had a little bit of a life-changing experience from those books and that reading material.

But eventually it moved into something that was very different.

I unconsciously became spiritual and religious.

The beliefs that I had had to do with energy and attracting things into your life and this new age spiritual stuff.

And I didn't realize that I was in some type of religion.

I didn't realize that that's what was going on.

Facebook Marketing - Part 2: Rebranding Adventism

Dear Heavenly Father, Lord, thank you for giving us a desire to reach our neighbors.

This is evidence that you're working on our hearts, and we thank you for it.

Father, as we discuss how to reach them today, we pray for your wisdom, we pray for your insight, and We pray for your love so that we may be able to show them your love.

So I'll recap a little bit yesterday if there are any people here that were not in the seminar yesterday.

So yesterday, we went through building a strategy and kind of the framework for that.

Today, now what we're going to do is we're going to build the strategy.

I just kind of gave an example because I was in Pennsylvania last week, so I was doing it in context of that.

I gave an example for a church there in Pennsylvania.

So if it says Pennsylvania, don't mind that.

So We also talked about the different stages of awareness and reaching people based on where they're at in those stages of awareness.

And we talked about the customer journey in bringing people through different phases of the customer journey in order to get them to the church.

So we'll recap a little bit on those things, but I also want to make a few disclaimers when we're getting into Facebook advertising, which we'll do more tomorrow.

And the disclaimer is that this is not the easy way out, right?

This is not some button that you press and now a bunch of people start coming into your church.

It definitely takes effort, it takes time and thought and prayer.

And also, this is not an excuse not to do other forms of outreach.

This is not an excuse to stop going door-to-door, to stop hitting the pavement and giving Bible studies to people one-on-one.

And this is also not a way of saying, we don't need to use billboards anymore, we don't need to use mailers.

I don't think that we need to stop using those.

I think we need to start using them correctly.

So in the strategy today, we're just gonna go through it together.

If you guys have any questions at all, any comments, please just raise your hand.

I'd love for it to be a little bit conversational, because if you have a question, I bet other people also have that same question.

And I just wanna make sure that you guys just understand this, I'm just really soaking in, so you can leave here and apply it to your churches.

So the first thing we're gonna start off with is this question, and it's how marketable is your church?

Now here are the questions, and you can just respond independently.

So the questions, question 1, wants to reach our local community.

So does your church actually want to reach the local community?

Is that something that's on their heart and on their mind?

2, is your church friendly and welcoming to seekers?

If someone comes in your church and they look different than you, they dress different than you, they don't talk like you do, they may smell differently than you, how do you guys respond?

You know, are you welcoming to them Or is there a little bit more of a cold interaction?

3, does your pastor present powerful spiritual messages when he preaches?

So with this, you just have to ask yourself, if we get people to our Evangelistic series, if we get people baptized in the church, are these people sticking around or are they just leaving after a year, after 2 years?

So, you know, again, respond independently and scale yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 for these.

So this is a good indicator to the first question.

If your church doesn't actually want to reach the local community, you'll see that by where they spend their money, where they allocate their different budgets.

So, again, this is important because, at the end of the day, if we're going to be presenting a way of getting people into your church, are they going to actually stick around?

Is their first interaction with a church member going to be something cold and not really welcoming.

So this depends on how marketable your church actually is.

Now, marketing is simply building relationships.

We need to remember that it's communication, human to human, and you're essentially building relationships with other humans in order to have influence and win their confidence so that you can get them to do something, right?

So that you can get them to do Bible studies to take or to make a decision to follow Jesus.

And in this quote, we said, we pointed out this mechanism right here, this word, persuasion.

Now, I said this yesterday, persuasion is not a bad thing.

We defined the difference between persuasion and manipulation, and we can use technology as a method of persuading people.

So that's what we're gonna be talking about when we start going through the layout of Facebook tomorrow.

And then we also talked about this quote right here.

And now we're going to jump into building the strategy.

So we'll actually have a document that I already filled out with some different desires.

And you guys can see that here in a second.

But our market, the people who make up our market are people who all have a desire and that desire can be fulfilled by what you're offering.

Right, that desire already exists within their heart and in their mind and all we have to do is now show them that the fulfillment of that is within what we're offering.

So what are some of those different desires?

Now here's a list and this is an extensive list you guys can probably add on to it, but here's just a list to get us started.

So the desires that may already exist within the heart and mind of the people in our community are these.

An understanding of the Bible, an understanding of Bible prophecy to get their spiritual questions answered.

1 of the things I hear over and over again in people's testimonies is that when they found this church, they finally got all of their questions answered.

So there's a lot of people out there who have a lot of spiritual questions, and many people don't have the understanding that we do as Adventists, So they're not really getting the answers.

People have a desire to know truth, to make sense of what's going on in the world.

They want hope, healing from emotional trauma, a better marriage, a happier family, stability, health, happiness, freedom from depression, freedom from stress, freedom from addiction, financial security, community and friendships, and then also improvements in their local community.

So, I would say that these right here, these desires, are the desires that make up a very small fraction of the market.

If you were to look at the market as a whole, that's defined by all of these different desires, you would probably notice that there are not as many people out there with these desires as there are with these desires.

So most of the time what we're doing when we're advertising for churches is that we're speaking to this desire.

So we're actually only speaking to a fraction of our market.

Yes, we may have depression, anxiety, recovery programs, or cooking school, or things like that, but I would say that we're not really proving to the community that we're even influential in those different areas.

How many people have heard of some of the presenters that we know as Adventists?

And as Adventists, we think that they're well known and they have credibility.

But when we send them out a piece of a mail or a little ad on Facebook.

Our focal point is this speaker is presenting on depression and anxiety.

They have no influence with the community, so they don't respond as well as we would hope to those different forms of advertisement.

So again, I believe that the health message is critical in evangelism, that it's a way in.

People already have these different desires within their hearts and with their minds, So we're just trying to create a bridge with our church and what we can fulfill on and help them with.

So if we spoke more to these different desires that already exist within a huge fraction of our market, we will actually be able to reach more people and build influence with more people.

And then as we gain their influence, then we can start touching on these different desires.

So I just wanted to mention that because the strategy that we're creating has to do with speaking to these different desires, winning their confidence, and then speaking to these desires.

And you can do it simultaneously as well.

You don't only have to speak to these desires all the time and then go to here.

You can kind of mix them together, but hitting more on these because, you know, people are looking for a better marriage.

The marriage statistic, which we're going to go over a few of them in a minute, you know, 50% of people get divorced in this country.

And a lot of it has to do with this right here, financial problems.

And people don't have happy families and struggle raising their kids.

Kids are getting raised off the internet and iPads nowadays.

So there's a lot more desires that exist over here.

So effective marketing, we talked about this yesterday a little bit, it is your ability to take a stranger and turn them into an advocate.

So this is someone who has never heard about Jesus before and eventually get them to a place where they love Jesus so much that they're out sharing Jesus.

So we talked about this, good morning, We talked about this yesterday where we're bringing people through this customer journey and what we're gonna do primarily for This seminar is we're going to talk about these first few stages.

Facebook Marketing - Part 3: How to Create Facebook Ads that Actually Work 1

Dear Heavenly Father, Lord, thank you for calling us to such an amazing mission, for the opportunity in front of us to reach people, for providing us technology to use as a tool to communicate your message to the masses.

Lord, we pray for your wisdom, your insight as we explore these different opportunities and we pray for your encouragement, Lord.

So the past 2 days we've been building the strategy for marketing just in general and then we're transitioning that now into specifically using it for Facebook advertising.

So just a brief overview of the strategy that we've talked about would be building a rapport, establishing a relationship with your audience before you start asking them to attend your church events, right?

So what we're doing is we're putting out little pieces of content coming in the forms of graphics and videos on Facebook so that our audience gets to see who we are and what we believe are values.

These different little nuggets, either they're spiritual nuggets or health nuggets, nuggets on how to have a better relationship with your spouse, how to have a better relationship with your family and your kids.

We're putting that content out there so that people can interact with us and we're building this engagement, this relationship with our community.

After that, we now transition into this invitation to whether it be a cooking class or a holiday program or a church series for evangelism.

So that's a little bit of a brief overview.

It's a fillable PDF that will, you can sit down with your church board and you guys can fill that out according to, you know, what types of things your church does, and then also it'll provide you with an audience worksheet.

And that audience worksheet will give you a really good outline of figuring out exactly who you're trying to reach in your local community.

If you wanted to run Facebook ads, which I'll explain a little bit more of the different features and things that you get when you run a Facebook ad, but if you wanted to run a Facebook ad, you have to create a business manager account.

So I know that you probably won't remember everything that I'm sharing with you today, all the little buttons that you have to press.
