Fight Coronavirus with Immune-Boosting Foods - Part 2

And, you know, a couple days back you did this video that now has millions of people watching.

And you went through the New START acronym showing how it can boost immunity.

And we're gonna talk a little bit about nutrition.

Yes, nutrition has a lot to do with how healthy our immune system is.

And we can actually suppress our immune system through sugar or free oils or we can enhance our immune system with particularly antioxidants.

And those antioxidant vegetables like the greens, spinach, kale, brussel sprouts, and broccoli.

And the number 1 antioxidant vegetable is garlic.

These things can really help our immunity, and garlic actually has some antiviral activity as well.

Probably also helps with social distancing.

Some people have stated an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but a garlic a day keeps everybody away.

Okay, so anything else with the nutrition?

I know here at Weimar Institute, as we're going through this time of uncertainty and whatnot, we've actually taken the oil down in our food here for the students.

We're trying to have very healthy immune supporting foods.

Yes, well, the antioxidant fruits are your berries primarily, but plums, even oranges.

Plums are even higher antioxidant than oranges, but oranges are pretty good food for, is boosting our immune system for COVID-19 and other viruses.

Are there any specifically antiviral type foods or fruits that vegetables that we could eat?

Well there are zinc itself is antiviral in fact if zinc comes in contact with the virus, it actually completely stops the replication of the virus.

When zinc gets into the cell, it actually stops replicase and replicases what the virus uses to reproduce itself.

And so your high zinc foods are gonna be like pumpkin seeds, you know, even Brazil nuts, those type of things.

Any danger of toxicity if you eat a food with zinc in it?

No, No danger of toxicity whatsoever, but you'd want to get that zinc into the cell.

And so studies have shown that quercetin actually, which is a bioflavonoid from the skin of grapes, actually helps that zinc get into the cell and stop the replication of the virus or if it comes in contact with the cell at a high concentration zinc might be able to get in all by itself.

In fact just recently the FDA did an emergency approval of a drug called chloroquine which is the drug for malaria But the reason why it can work for COVID-19 is it opens the ion channel for zinc to get into the cell and basically kill that virus by stopping the replication of it.

But we may not need chloroquine if we have quercetin, because quercetin can do that as well.

Okay, we've heard some excellent ideas for nutrition.

I might watch this again if I were you and make a list and then head out to the store.

We're not just talking about what the doctor can do at the hospital for you, but what you can do to boost your immunity.

Total Community Immunity Series - Part 1

I'm glad you're with me today and with us today.

And you might wonder why I'm not dressed in a suit.

I have the shirt on, Total Community Involvement shirt, as we're involved in the community as a part of our initiatives here at Weimar Institute.

We know that you're involved in the community as well.

But, you know, we're gonna talk today about total community immunity, if you wanna use a new name for our acronym, because, well, tell us what we're gonna talk about and why we're gonna talk about it, Dr.

Well, the world is talking about how to avoid coming in contact with COVID-19, which is helpful, but not bulletproof.

In other words, it can still be spread, despite all of the measures that we try to put in practice.

And so if you actually get COVID-19, your chance of survival is directly dependent on how healthy your immune system is.

And this is what the world is largely ignoring.

Hardly anybody is talking about how to boost the immunity if by chance we actually get this virus.

And it actually is something that we can do as part of our regular routine every day.

And it would help us in a lot of other diseases as well.

And so we'd like to take this opportunity as the world is focusing in on COVID-19 on how you can survive COVID-19 if you come in contact with it, and how those measures will also help you avoid a host of other causes of death.

You're gonna be presenting some material and then other guests as well, and Dr.

Ramirez, maybe you could introduce us to Dr.

Ramirez you could tell us what you're planning to cover.

Eddie Ramirez is a physician here at Weimar Institute and a researcher.

He's actually published more studies, more abstracts than I think anybody in Weimar Institute's history.

And he has also done a great service by looking at the scientific literature regarding how to boost the immunity and you're going to be learning some great peer-reviewed studies That have actually shown simple things that you can do to survive COVID-19 as well as other diseases.

Ramirez, give just a little overview of what you're gonna be covering.

Yep, we have a lot of experience by the fact that Adventists have been leaders regarding the lifestyle medicine approach and experience such as the 1918 crisis that happened.

There was a big epidemic worldwide, yet the Adventist approach decreased mortality, decreased complications.

So I have 28 years that I have worked in lifestyle center settings.

So I'm going to be sharing with you evidence-based things that you can practically put into real life so that you can protect yourself and increase the immunity and help the disease if it's present to decrease its potential to cause in you further harm.

Well, thank you so much for coming and thank you for joining us.

We're looking forward to learning not just what maybe medicine can do for us or hospitals, those are very important, but really what you with God's help can do for yourself.

So welcome to this journey that we're all on together.

Fight Coronavirus with NAC -  Part 3

We're in our series Total Community Immunity, TCI, Total Community Involvement, but we're trying to help you in your fight against any kind of disease or virus.

Nedley, the president of Weimar Institute, internal medicine specialist, is with us today.

It's actually something that is available.

Our bodies make it from actually the amino acid cysteine.

And we can also produce better glutathione levels through glutamine as well.

And so several amino acids come together to increase glutathione levels, which dramatically improve our immune system.

In addition, NAC can have some antiviral activity itself.

And so a very interesting study was just cited recently that was done years ago and of all places Italy.

They took people and they had them take placebo.

They were, it was a randomized controlled trial, which is the best way to do something to see if a supplement or a medicine's gonna work or not, compared to placebo.

And the group that was randomized to the NAC, just 1, 200 milligrams a day, they came in contact with the flu virus just as commonly as the placebo people did.

But they found out that if you were taking NAC, 3 out of 4 chance, you developed no symptoms from the flu.

You developed an antibody, so it didn't actually prevent you from getting the virus into your system.

But you actually fought it off so well, you didn't develop a single symptom.

And the placebo group, it was way down, instead of 75%, it was down in 20%.

So when you see that huge difference between placebo and the active agent, you know that this is producing a very positive effect.

It could have implications in a lot of other viruses including the coronavirus and COVID-19.

We've actually been utilizing it even in the hospital setting.

I work in the hospital as well and NAC is actually available in the hospital as well.

They've adopted it in our hospital in Auburn where I practice and where we take care of critically ill patients but this information really needs to go around the globe because it's something simple doesn't have side effects it's not going to have any adverse effect for you and it is going to potentially have a very positive effect.

Wow, you know, so ever since you said that on that video that's kind of gone viral, I mean maybe that's not a good term to use right now, but it's going all over the place and helping all kinds of people, you know, I started taking that.

But you know, someone did email us the other day and say, did you know that this has maybe an interaction with some medications that are anticoagulants?

Yeah, NAC really doesn't have interactions.

I mean, it can interact with charcoal because charcoal binds onto it.

But as far as typical drug interactions, it might have some effect if you're taking the drug warfarin, just like spinach or broccoli can have an effect and other foods.

But even that seems to be extremely minor if at all.

But if you're on warfarin you need to be checking your blood thinning time whenever you make a change in your diet or change in supplements or anything like that anyways.

But NAC has no known interactions with the others.

Alright, so it sounds like something easy to do.

Maybe you should head down to that store and get some NAC because this program is not just about what the doctor can do for you but what you can do to improve your own immunity.

Fight Coronavirus with Exercise - Part 4

Welcome back to our Total Community Immunity series.

Part of Total Community Involvement, we're trying to help you in the community boost your immunity.

He's the president of Weimar Institute and a practicing physician, specialty in internal medicine.

And you take care of the critically ill and when they're in the hospital they're probably in the ICU and they're probably not exercising but we're going to talk about exercise today.

Yes Exercise is something that can prevent you from ever going to the ICU, particularly if you come in contact with COVID-19.

And we actually recommend the best time for exercise is early in the morning and it be aerobic.

The air is freshest then and it's also been shown to actually improve your metabolism and you're actually able to make more muscle when you do it fasting in the morning pre-breakfast.

And it can also have some immune positive effects.

In fact, diabetics are well known to have a compromised immunity.

And even in diabetics, it's been shown that exercise in the morning will help their sensitivity to insulin throughout the entire day when they really do it vigorously and they get that good aerobic workout.

It could be brisk walking, it could be running combined with walking, it could be bicycling, it could be swimming, but it's the rhythmic exercise.

I did 4.5 miles this morning myself, pre-breakfast.

How long did you go and how long should a person go?

What's the least amount they could go to get benefit and how long should they average go?

Well, the least amount they can go and get benefit if it's vigorous is actually 8 minutes.

Studies have shown an 8 minute exercise is better than none whatsoever.

And you know, you can run a mile in 8 minutes.

And then as far as where you get the most benefit, the more exercise, the better the benefit up to particularly 3 hours.

But where that starts to taper off as far as its exponential benefit is after an hour.

So I normally recommend for busy people to get 1 hour of aerobic exercise a day.

And since I was running in the mountains and uphill, I did that 4.5 miles in a little less than an hour today.

Any kind of clothing you should wear or any kind of equipment people need to get?

Well, I'd say there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.

And so don't use the weather as an excuse.

Have the right clothing to go out in all sorts of weather.

And also, of course, even exercise post-meal is okay, you know, particularly for diabetics.

It can keep the blood sugars and the postprandial blood sugars under control But I've noticed for a lot of people if they don't get it in the morning pre-breakfast.

They're not getting it at all that day there's just a lot of things that come up And exercise is 1 of those things we should prioritize for our immune system.

And it looks like we have our marching or running orders here today, Dr.

By the way, is it better to exercise with someone else or is that something you should do alone?

Well, either way is fine, but the problem of doing it with someone else is sometimes we're dependent on them, and if they're not gonna do it, then we're not either.

You know, for myself, I most of the time do it alone, but not quite alone, because I have a little recorder reading devotional material to me as I am doing my exercise, and you're getting a double benefit that way.

I put on my headphones and I probably listen to 5 or 10 sermons a week and you know when people say well I can't go with you today I'm okay with that because I'm exercising but I'm also listening to God's Word and being revived.

By the way this program is not just about what the doctor can do for you at the ICU or the hospital, but it's about what you, with God's help, can do for yourself.

Fight Coronavirus with Saunas -  Part 5

Welcome back to our series on how to boost your immunity.

Eddie Ramirez and we're going to talk today about water.

Water can be something very beneficial as we try to fight this problem of coronavirus.

So the solution to pollution is dilution, as they say.

1 of my favorite countries in the world is Finland, such a beautiful country.

And 1 of the things that Finnish people thought the whole world is the importance of saunas.

Did you know that there's more saunas in Finland than cars?

And because These people have been doing this for hundreds of years.

They have a body of evidence that is impressive about the function, the relationship between the sonar bat and the immune system function.

1 of the ways is that we have a bunch of soldiers stationed in our bones, inside our bone marrow.

White blood cells, is that what you're talking about, or red blood cells?

Both of them, but also a good amount of white blood cells.

So when we do what is called a heat shock, we put heat and then we put cold.

That event in our body causes to release all those soldiers to our bloodstream.

They think there's a problem, they come out to fight.

So imagine having the virus come in and here you have this standing army just waiting for it.

That's why it is theorized that coronavirus would be, it would be beneficial to do this.

We don't have research currently on coronavirus.

We're actually here at Weimar creating a protocol to study that.

But in the case of SARS and other types of coronavirus, it has been shown beneficial, the SANABAT.

And actually here at Weimar, because of this scare with the coronavirus, the entire student body and staff are starting to do saunas actually every day.

Once you do 1 of those sauna baths, you love it.

The beauty of the sauna bath is that you can be in a room in which the air is very hot.

We're talking about 160, 170 degrees because the humidity tends to be lower than a steam bath.

That high heat, we know that coronavirus doesn't like the high heat.

So the fact that you are in that high heat room, if there's some coronavirus, it is destroyed within minutes of its contact with that high heat.

The protocol says that we need 30 minutes of sauna to get the most benefit.

So you do 30 minutes followed by a cold shower.

That's enough to create that shock and increase that fighting power of your immune system.

Well, this sounds like something all of us would be interested in.

It sounds delightful, and I know from experience it can be just very invigorating while it's boosting your immunity.

3 Steps Through Anxiety - Part 6

Have you ever been filled with stress and anxiety, just kind of feel like a tightness in your chest, maybe some symptoms that come on like your heart racing?

That's happened to me and that's probably happened to many.

And In the last few days, many are concerned, they're anxious, especially since there's been a lockdown in the state of California.

So what kind of things can we do to get through those anxious moments?

Well, let me just share a couple strategies that have been helpful to me and others.

First of all, I remember that there's different sections of my brain and the section that's really firing at that time is that middle section of my brain where there's a place called the amygdala where fear and panic and all those things happen.

And sometimes it's very useful because it releases hormones that can help protect me or protect others.

But sometimes it's just over functioning.

So I have to remember not just the amygdala, but I have to remember the second thing, be breathing.

And So what I do at that time when I'm feeling stressed is I say I need to breathe in deeply and breathe out deeply.

Not only do I think about my midbrain and breathe, but I also think about what are those thoughts that are causing anxiety?

And I analyze them and I kind of re-script them, re-label them, you might say.

So instead of having fear, I think, wait a minute, fear is about the unknown, it's about the future.

Maybe instead of fear, I can have anticipation.

And then maybe instead of frustration, I can say, wait, I'm learning patience.

I might remember a text, count it all joy when you fall into various trials because you're actually learning how to be patient.

But then finally, and probably most importantly, I begin to think about a promise or something from God's word that could help me.

1 of my favorite is in Colossians chapter 3.

If then you be raised with Christ, set your mind on things above, not on earth.

For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

And When Christ, who is our life, appears, we also so appear with Him in glory.

And that gives me such peace, because I realize my life is hidden with Christ in God, and anything that's happening had to come through Him.

And that gives me more peace than anything else.

Fight Coronavirus with Good Hygiene - Part 7

Welcome to our series on boosting immunity and helping the community.

He's joining us from Ardmore, Oklahoma, where he practices in a busy hospital as a pulmonologist.

And we're gonna talk about the lungs and COVID-19.

First of all, you know, you look at lungs all the time.

So describe to us maybe the anatomy, the physiology of the lungs, and then we'll get into what COVID-19 does in the lungs.

You know, the lung is a complex organ, and it has a lot of intricate structures.

If you think of it as a tree, it's called a bronchial tree, where the organ is divided into a conducting airway and a respiratory unit.

Now The conducting airway comprises of the trachea, the bronchi, the bronchioles, and ultimately into the alveoli, which is the respiratory unit of the lungs.

You're born with about on the average about 500 million air sacs that are clustered in a grape-like fashion and this is where gas exchange occurs.

In other words, when you breathe in, that's how the oxygen goes from the outside and hooks up to your red blood cells?

So you breathe in oxygen, you exhale carbon dioxide.

You know, When the hemoglobin molecule goes by the alveolar sac, that's where oxygen gets absorbed and carbon dioxide gets excreted.

Okay, so basically you're taking in the air, you're getting rid of the trash, comes down that trachea, then into that, you know, kind of the tree.

And right there, those little sacks is where the air exchange takes place.

So what happens then if we get something like COVID-19?
