How to Start a Public High School Ministry

We want to welcome everyone to this very important seminar where we are going to look at the mechanics of starting a successful Adventist club on a public school campus.

I'm gonna record this meeting as well so we can archive it for the future.

All right, let me start over now that I started our recording on our side.

It's about the mechanics of starting an Adventist club on public school campuses.

And I was talking with Mike before the seminar and he was telling me his vision.

He would love to see Adventist clubs all over the United States in public schools around this country and around the world for that matter and every high school.

Wouldn't it be great Mike if we had an Adventist club that would be truly amazing.

Now Mike is a longtime Adventist brought into the Pathfinder ministry what a blessing He's been an Adventist for 52 years and has been a literature evangelist.

Mike, how long did you say you've done literature ministry?

36 years, praise the Lord for that, what a blessing.

And for the last 7 years, he's had this very interesting burden and exciting ministry in the public school system, which we're going to learn about and hopefully inspire you to participate as well in a public high school in your area.

So before we get started, I'd like for us to pray and then I have a question That I'm going to want each 1 of you to respond to in the chat box in this particular session, so again we want to welcome you to this seminar on how to share Christ and the 3 angels' messages in public high schools.

Heavenly Father, we are so thankful for this day.

We ask that you will bless us so that we can be a blessing.

I pray that you'll be with Mike as he shares today that you will fill him with your Holy Spirit, that you will guide him with exactly what to say.

And for each 1 of those who are watching this seminar may they be blessed and encouraged and inspired to share the 3 angels messages at a public high school near them.

Thank you again for your love, thank you for your amazing grace and your goodness.

Okay, Mike, we're gonna turn it over to you.

Feel free, share your screen, talk to us, and share with us about the mechanics of how to do this public high school ministry.

9 years ago our pastor, former pastor Rob Bernardo, who's at the Battle Creek Church now, when he came to Fresno, the church that he was pastoring, which is the church which I'm presently attending, shared a property line with the public high school and Pastor Bernardo thought well you know it'd be nice if we could have some kind of ministry with that school so he started praying about it and he actually prayed for 2 years Lord help us get on that campus somehow.

Well when he finally got up the courage to talk to the principal, 2 things surprised him.

First of all, there was already an Adventist influence on that campus.

What happened was that the principal, his best friend, when he was growing up was a Seventh-day Adventist.

And his best friend's mother was a volunteer for Dorcas at the Sunnyside Church, which is another church here in Fresno.

And so she asked him, she said, can we open an Adventist, a Dorcas Center on your campus?

And they gave her a nice room, you know, it's a kind of low-income area and some of the, believe it or not, some of the kids are even homeless.

So what I liked about that ministry that they had, they actually were providing new clothes and new shoes for the kids so that they would look decent, so that they would have a little self-esteem.

The other thing that surprised him, which really surprised him, was when the principal told him that he himself had been praying for the last year that the church, which shared their property line, would get involved in helping the school.

We've been at this for about 7 years now.

And in the last year, we've actually, we started out with 1 school, but last year, we added, in about a five-week period, we added about 8 more schools.

So right now, we have a total of 9 schools with 11 clubs.

Probably some of you are familiar with this book.

If you don't have this book, I'm gonna give this to you.

But this book talks about the importance of being filled with the Holy Ghost.

Last year, Joyce Mulligan, who is the prayer coordinator for our conference, she introduced this book to my wife and I, and she said, read this.

And Joyce also suggested, now the book talks about praying every day to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

But she suggested that we actually set our alarm clocks every hour, on the hour, to pray for the Holy Spirit.

And as a result of this, our ministry went from 0 to 60 in nanoseconds.

Now, once again, I'm sure a lot of you have read this, but what I would like to suggest, because this is so important, the Holy Spirit.

You can't do anything about the Holy Spirit.

The author says that we should read this between 6 to 10 times.

Most people that I've talked to about this who have read this, the most I've ever found was, oh, we read it 3 times.

What I'm suggesting is that if you want to have a successful ministry, not just high school, but any ministry, that you read this book the minimum of 6 times, just like the author suggested.

Now, 1 question a lot of people have, because you know we've been doing this for a while, and when I meet see people at camp meeting or at churches, they always have a lot of questions.

Probably the number 1 question that I get asked is, how in the world can you have not just a Christian club, but an Adventist Christian club on a public high school campus?

And The answer to that is in 1987, during the Reagan administration, a lot of people don't know this, but in 1987, under the Reagan administration, Congress passed what's called the Equal Access Act.

The Equal Access Act mandated that if any school had any publicly funded high school had any kind of extracurricular activity or club, and I mean, there's a zillion of them, right?

There's Star Trek clubs, there's hiking clubs, there's philosophy clubs, I mean you name it there's a zillion.

They cannot stop a Christian club from forming and they can't stop these 2 were mentioned specifically, they can't stop the Gay-Straight Alliance.

Now, for some reason, the Gay-Straight Alliance got that memo, but we Adventists, we didn't.

However, the good news is that none of the other churches have gotten it either.

Which means that we have a very small window of opportunity to get into every school, every public high school in North America before the other churches find out what we're doing.

Now, The 3, usually when we're trying to get on a campus, they usually have the average of about 3 clubs that are already operating.

1 of those is fellowship of Christian athletes.

A lot of people prefer fellowship of Christian athletes.

In fact, fellowship of Christian athletes is even, I understand, is even on some of our Adventist campuses.

There's also campus life and there's also Youth for Christ.

But the reason why Bread of Life, which is the name of our organization, the reason why our Adventist clubs usually end up being even bigger, and let And let me qualify that.

Right now, of the 11 clubs that we have on public high school campuses, 2 of those schools are the largest clubs on campus.

Now, I didn't say that they're 2 of the largest religious clubs.

I said they're the largest clubs on campus, period.

And the reason for that is we have a secret weapon.

Now, most people who follow our clubs, our club, who have participated in our club, the first thing that usually comes to their mind is that, well, you know, you guys serve pizza to the kids.

Although I will add this, all the clubs on campus that I know of serve pizza to the kids.

Our secret weapon is, I don't want to be like our president holding it upside down, our secret weapon is this.

We actually give out Bibles in our club, during our club meetings, and we have the kids read them.

We want them to find out what the Bible has to say.

We don't want them to take our word for it or what have you.

So they're reading directly out of the Bible.

Now, this begs the question, of course, well, what about Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Youth for Christ, Campus Life?

I have never honestly seen them use the Bible 1 time.

I will say this, and this is no criticism, all of these clubs are doing a great job.

I mean, Anytime we're presenting Christ to be in the public square, it's a good thing.

And the majority of people who answered this poll, 75%, said that they are outside of the Adventist church.

So, Pastor Doug, that's your audience today.

Right now we are, in case you want the context, I am broadcasting from or Zooming from the amazing facts, the new offices that are above Rockland.

I'll take my little camera here and give you a little virtual tour.

It's a beautiful place that on the edge of the Sacramento Valley, just overlooking the Sierras, and so It's a great spot.

I was a little worried about doing it at home because now with the pandemic, sometimes there could be several people in the house and wanted to make sure that we were able to do this without too many distractions.

When I was invited to participate with ASI, I asked if I could talk about this subject, knowing that the context of our studies is dealing with the 3 angels' messages.

And maybe it'd be a good idea to begin by reading through what those messages are, and then highlighting, of course, what I'm going to be talking about which is the second angels message talking about Babylon and Coming out of Babylon, of course, if you go to Revelation chapter 14 and you read in verse 6 It says then I saw an angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth, to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people.

So this is a message that's to go to every tribe.

That didn't just mean the tribes of Israel.

Saying with a loud voice, fear God and give glory to him for the hour of his judgment has come and worship him that made the earth and the sea and the springs of water 1 of the things that distinguished the God of Israel from the other pagan gods.

The Jews said this is the God that made everything, all the other gods are made out of.

You remember when the sailors asked Jonah, you know, who are you and where are you from?

He said, I'm a Hebrew and I worship the God that made the heaven and the earth and the sea.

And so it's calling us back to the Jehovah creator in this verse.

And then verse 8, and I heard another angel, this is the second angel now, that followed saying Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she's made all nations drink the wine of the wrath of her fornication.

And then the third angel followed them with a loud voice saying, if anyone worships the beast in his image and receives his mark in his forehead or on his hand, he himself will also drink of the wine of the wrath of God that is poured out full strength into the cup of his indignation.

He will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the lamb.

And the smoke of their torment ascends up forever and ever, and they have no rest day or night who worship the beast in his image and whoever receives the mark of his name.

Here are those that keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

Contrasting those who worship the beast with those who worship God.

1 keeps the commandments of the beast, 1 keeps the commandments of God.

And so, the reason that it is so important for us to get the message to call people out of Babylon is because you see what the terrible judgment is that falls on people who don't come out of Babylon.

And so again, the second angel's message, Babylon is fallen, come out of her, my people.

I just wanna read this so we kind of have the groundwork before we dive in.

In Revelation 18, I'll read first, maybe 4 verses here.

After these things, I saw another angel come down from heaven having great authority and the earth was illuminated with his glory and he cried mightily with a loud voice saying babel and the great is fallen is fallen and has become the dwelling place of demons and a prison for every foul spirit and a cage for every unclean and hated bird.

For all the nations have drunk the wine of the wrath of her fornication." Of course, it talks about what that wine is in chapter 17.

She holds in her hand a golden cup full of, it's the blood of the saints and the martyrs and it's a wine of false doctrine.

And the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.

I heard another voice from heaven saying, come out of her my people, lest you share of her sins and you receive of her plagues.

For her sins have reached to heaven and God has remembered her iniquities.

And so we'll, that gives us a background there.

Now, the second angel's message, you notice, is not only there in Revelation 14, but the second angel's message is expanded on in Revelation 18, meaning immediately prior to the judgment that falls on Babylon and prior to the mark of the beast, there's a great reiteration, an amplification of the second angel's message.

Now, in order to understand who it is being called out of Babylon, we've got to take a moment and talk about what is Babylon?

Well, you know, you first find Babylon mentioned in Genesis where it talks about the tower of Babel.

Matter of fact, even before that, you can read about Nimrod, the mighty hunter, and he was a mighty hunter and the word there, it actually says against God.

So many have thought Nimrod was there, the king, the leader who is sort of mobilizing everyone to build the Tower of Babel.

And it says the beginning of his kingdom was Babel.

The word has grown over the years to be associated with babbling because of what happened at the Tower of Babel.

And if you, the reason in English we call a word a baby is because babies babble.

And that's, you know, otherwise it was called an infant.

And so that takes us to the story of what happened.

And after the flood and people began to multiply, they found their way down to the Valley of Sinar, where Babylon is, modern Iraq.

It was a lot more fertile and lush back then.

They wanted to have strength by consolidation.

They didn't necessarily believe God would not destroy the world again with a flood.

So they said, we better do something to save ourselves.

So 1 of the keys of Babylon, it's salvation by works, man-made salvation.

They said, let us make a name for ourselves.

They're not interested in glorifying the name of God.

So here you've got the contrast between God worship and man worship.

And it says it'll be a monument to continued disobedience.

They had been told to go scatter and fill the earth.

I always like to say that the last person you should ever trust is a preacher, no matter who they are, where they're from, how long they've been in the church.

And Yes, even if they're from the remnant church, it doesn't matter.

We should take out our Bibles and always evaluate if what the person said lines up with scripture and thus say the Lord.
