01 The Science of Survival

And, you know, normally we love to come visit you from time to time down there in Loma Linda, but obviously it's not working out this time.

But, you know, I'm going to share with you a message called the science of survival.

And we're going to look at some things now.

I was talking with my brother-in-law just maybe a week ago, and my brother-in-law just finished school at Andrews University Seminary, and he's gonna be pastoring soon, but they've been staying with us a little bit in the transition before they move on to his pastorate that he's gonna be starting soon.

And while he's working at Lowe's, he had shared with me, he had read on Facebook, a friend of his, a couple, few weeks ago said, wow, man, I'm here in Chicago.

He said, and our price of lumber has doubled.

And then my brother-in-law just a week ago tells me, working at Lowe's, he said, you know, actually, he said, at our Lowe's here, he said, the price of plywood has tripled.

And, and I said, I said, what's going on?

He said, you've got fires in California, you've got hurricane, you know, in the, in the Gulf, and then you have COVID too, which people have been building like crazy during the midst of COVID.

So you have all these things together like a perfect storm.

And it's, you know, potentially tripling the price of building materials.

And, And as he said all that, we're just talking about it, just like it's just common talk.

But then as we said it, I said to him, it's funny, we're talking like about the signs of the times, and we're not trying to talk about the signs and the times, we're just talking about what's happening around us, as like present day news is what the Bible prophesied.

Now, you know, when we think about this, we think of what Jesus said there and in Matthew chapter 24 and verse beginning of verse 5, you know, this is the passage where Jesus is sharing the signs of the times.

And he says, for many shall come in my name saying, I am Christ and shall deceive many.

And you shall hear of wars and rumors of wars, see that you be not troubled.

Now it's interesting, cause you think, well, we don't have a lot of wars going on right now.

I mean, yeah, there are some going on in the world right now.

You've probably heard Armenia and Azerbaijan are at war right at this present moment, but that seems so far away like for many of us, unless you have an Armenian background or something, you know, that just seems like a world away.

But you may have heard like in the news, people are talking about a potential coming civil war in the United States.

And you think like that sounds so extreme.

But just just tuck that 1 in the back of your mind.

So even though that seems far off, we'll get right back to that in a moment.

So Jesus says, see that you be not troubled, for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there shall be famines.

1 of the side effects you may know of COVID is that we're being told that many nations are struggling much more with food scarcity or food insecurity because of COVID, not necessarily the disease itself is causing it, but because of the strain on the infrastructure, the difficulty with society and not being able to, some countries have been kind of standoffish and not exporting their grains and so forth as much like Russia.

And so this is something they said, actually, there's a potential, I don't know if it'll happen or not, but there's a potential that more people could die from starvation because of the side effects of COVID, not the disease itself, but just because of the difficulty in commerce.

And so, and then pestilences, well obviously we're living in the midst of a pandemic.

Well, obviously, we do see earthquakes too, but in diverse places.

Now, we probably, many of us have heard the term sorrows and the new translations and in the Greek are this word sorrows is birth pangs.

So just like women who go through their contractions leading up to birth, the birth pains, they become more frequent and more intense.

Now, thinking about this in Luke 21, verse 28, speaking in the context of the signs of the times, Jesus says, and when you see these things begin to come to pass, then look up and lift up your heads for your redemption draweth nigh.

So The signs of the times are not to simply strike people with horror.

But these are to actually get us to look up, not look down, not become despondent and give up and angry and hateful and hating other people who disagree with us.

But rather we are to look up because we recognize that our savior is drawing nigh.

So we can actually have a joy that Jesus is coming again.

And we need to recognize as these things are taking place.

They're just small pictures of what is coming.

But I don't think we're going through the worst of it, but we're getting these pictures.

And this gives us an idea that we need to lift up our heads.

We need to keep our eyes focused on Jesus in this time.

In Matthew 24 12, still within the signs of the times, this context here, it says, and because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax or grow cold.

And if you just stop right there and think about that particular sign at the time, there is no question we're seeing this fulfilled around us.

There is becoming a hard heartedness in society that is unbelievable.

If somebody has 1, they're on 1 end of the political spectrum and somebody else is on the other side, if they disagree with each other, it used to be like when I was younger, people would disagree, They would even maybe bicker a little bit.

But in the end, you could still be neighbors.

You let those things that were like water under the bridge.

Now we live at a time where love has literally grown cold.

And maybe it could grow colder, and I'm sure it will.

People, if you disagree with them, they hate you.

And many of them will actually want you dead and say, I wish you would die.

And not only that, They don't want you to have a job and to be able to have finances.

And that perspective of you shouldn't have a job, you shouldn't be able to make a living because you disagree with my political perspective, and I'm not talking about either side.

We're just simply saying this is the spirit of Antichrist.

Friends, and we don't want to be caught up in that spirit.

We don't want to be the ones who hate other people and hope they can never make a living.

We are to love our enemies and pray for those even that persecute us.

So friends, if we're getting caught up in the hatred that is taking place in society right now, we are fulfilling prophecy that our love is growing cold.

And we are told that we need to gain warmth from the coldness of those around us.

So as others are growing cold, instead of that making us cold and hateful and spiteful and hating who we perceive to be our enemies.

We need to be loving even those who spitefully use us and persecute us.

We should care for those who are angry and hateful in society right now, not just hating somebody because they're angry.

We are actually going to have a civil war.

We're gonna have a civil war in this country and in other countries.

We're told this, and notice this is written in 1899, years after the Civil War.

This is not a message about the Civil War.

The Civil War in the United States ended in the mid 1860s.

And so notice this is years later than this.

In India, China, Russia, and the cities of America, Thousands of men and women are dying of starvation.

Well, there aren't probably thousands dying of starvation today, but it's going to happen.

The moneyed men, because they have the power, control the market.

They purchase at low rates all that they can obtain, and they sell at greatly increased prices.

This means starvation to the poorer classes and will result in a civil war.

It's interesting right now that we're living with people talking.

02 Wilderness Revival

Lord, I pray that you will touch each mind and heart in ways that are in ways that only you can That you would guide and you can even cause people to hear what they need to hear sometimes even when it's not spoken And so father we ask that Jesus would be uplifted, that your Holy Spirit would dwell within us, and that your word would be the living word of God.

Well, I'm gonna be talking about wilderness revival.

And this idea kind of comes here from, maybe you've read the story of Hosea.

Hosea is a terrible story in a way, and we maybe don't like to say that about the Bible, but it's a heartbreaking story of a man with a woman, a man who marries a woman who leaves him and goes and commits adultery, not seemingly just once.

She runs around it, seems like, and this is parallel to God's people, and God's people of Israel, and maybe this could even be a picture of God's people even today.

And notice what it says in here in Hosea.

This is verse 2 to 5 right here, and then we'll get to verse 14.

She that conceived them hath done shamefully.

For she said, I will go after my lovers that give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.

Therefore, behold, I will hedge up thy way with thorns.

She's looking to get things from them, she's a prostitute, literally.

And it's an ugly picture, it's a true picture, but yet it's also a depiction of God's people that they run after other lovers, other gods, and seek to gain things from them, some kind of benefit.

And it says, and make a wall that she shall not find her paths, and she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them.

And she shall seek them, but shall not find them.

Then she shall say, I will go and return to my first husband, for then was it better with me than now." What a picture.

And the good news is, is that God is that first husband.

That though at times in our lives, probably all of us at some time, maybe somebody hasn't, maybe somebody has been faithful continually, that would be incredible.

But for most of us at some point, we've run after other lovers.

We initially sought to follow God and then we began to turn away after other things seeking to get some benefit from the things of this world.

And then often when we're down, when we feel guilty, when we feel ashamed, when we're at the lowest, we begin to think, it was better for me when I was connected to Jesus.

And so the beautiful thing in this picture of Jose and Gomer Is that Jose doesn't just give up on his wife.

The picture is that God doesn't just give up on us regardless of what we've done he still seeks us out and What do we see?

What ends up what does God say therefore?

I will allure her He's gonna try to win back the love and affections of his wife and bring her into the wilderness and speak comfortably to her.

That God to win back his bride, that Hosea with Gomer to win back his bride, there's something about going out into the wilderness and seeking to allure, to attract, to reveal some beauty to her In order to endure this wandering woman to himself This is something that god does we see it throughout scripture that his people often have turned away from him.

And 1 of the things we see is that they go then out into the wilderness, that God may allure the people back to him.

And as he does that, he's seeking to transform them, to take their eyes off the things of the world, to reconnect them with him.

I'm gonna share a quotation with you very quickly.

Let me share, yes, this particular quote.

So 3 things happened to prepare Moses to be someone who, an individual that would lead people to the promised land.

It says, Moses had been learning much that he must unlearn.

The influences that have surrounded him in Egypt, the love of his foster mother, his own high position as the king's grandson, the dissipation on every hand, the refinement, the subtlety, and the mysticism of a false religion, the splendor of idolatrous worship, the solemnity, the solemn grandeur of architecture and sculpture all had left deep impressions on his, upon his developing mind.

Now we're going to come back to this quotation here, but here's the thing.

So we get this picture that Moses, Moses had been in Egypt.

He was in Egypt because he was in his mother put him in a little ark, the King James Version says a tiny little boat.

And long story short, the pharaoh's daughter ends up seeing him and they go check, they look, and oh, there's a baby and he's crying.

She then takes Moses to be her own child, but first she has Moses' own mother take care of him.

His mother takes care of him probably till roughly the age of 12.

And then what happens at that point is that he goes into Egypt.

Now he had his early upbringing by his mother, leading him close to the God of heaven, the God of earth, the creator of all things.

And then he goes into Egypt, this great city, probably the greatest city on planet Earth at the time.

And so he sees all of the great architecture, all the work of men's hands.

He goes through the highest education that humans could go through at the time.

And so he's affected by the things that are all around him to some capacity.

He has been impacted by the world around him.

Many times we try to believe that they haven't, that we're not affected by the society, that we are just our own people.

But the reality is we are affected by our surroundings, by the people we know, by the books we read, by the things we watch on the internet.

Notice what it says in Acts chapter 7, 22 and 23.

It says, And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.

When he was 40 years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.

And this retort, at this retort, Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian.

You remember the story that Moses ends up killing a guy, tries hiding his body and Long story short, the Pharaoh finds out and he has to flee for his own life.

At this retort, Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of 2 sons.

Now, when 40 years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in the bush, in a bush.

And here we have, so Moses, you think about this.

How many years does he end up spending in that wilderness?

And remember, he had been affected by the world around him.

He maybe thought that by his own power, by his own military strength and discerning and able to maneuver in war, you know, that might've made him think, hey, I'll kill this guy.

I'll kill this Egyptian who's hurting my brethren.

And maybe they'll all come flock to me, but they don't.

There ends up being, they say, oh, you're gonna kill me like you killed the Egyptian.

And he realized, oh man, I got to get out of here.

So he takes off and 40 years, 40 years he spends in the wilderness and in that time period he had to actually unlearn many of the things that he had been educated in, in his worldly education.

And you might think, well, wasn't that a waste of time?

I mean, 40 years, I mean, so much could have been done.

Rather than spending time out in nature, rather than spending time out in the wilderness, I mean, like, God could have done that much quicker.

But it wasn't a waste of time in God's eyes.

God knew that much needed to change in the mind of Moses so that he would become the man that he was actually called to be.

He became someone who would tend the sheep.

And as he is leading the flocks, if you've ever worked with sheep, which obviously most of us have not, but if you've ever spent time around them, you realize that they are rebellious little creatures.

We think of the goats as very rebellious.

We think all the sheep and the goats, the sheep are the good ones.

Well, they are in the illustration, but sheep are rascals to each other.

If you've ever spent time around them, they're not kind to each other, impatient and gentle.

They smash their heads into other sheep when they want the food that they're eating.

And so it takes time to learn to work with them and connect with them and to lead these animals so that they know your own voice.

And Moses was beginning to discover these experiences in nature that he never could have quite experienced with the greatest human education that he could possibly have.

03 Religious Aggression and the Health Message

You can bow your heads with me for a word of prayer.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the opportunity to study both scripture and science.

I pray that your Holy Spirit would guide, that you'd give us wisdom, insight, balance, and that even within the midst of this, that Jesus would be uplifted, we pray in his name, amen.

So the Bible says, Jesus said, or speaking of Jesus anyway Luke 9 verse 2 says and he Jesus sent them the disciples to do 2 main things to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

So there were really 2 messages, 2 great works that Jesus sent forth his disciples to do while he was here on earth.

And thinking about that, So they were given this message to teach people about the kingdom of God and number 2 to heal the sick.

And it's interesting that the 2 great works that God's people have in the last days are the very same 2 things.

Number 1, to teach people about preparing for the kingdom of God.

And number 2, to be a part of the healing ministry that Jesus left to his disciples.

And we were told this, about this, a Sunday law and medical missionary work where religious aggression is taking place.

It says, as religious aggression subverts the liberties of our nation, those who would stand for freedom of conscience will be placed in unfavorable positions.

For their own sake, they should, while they have the opportunity, become intelligent in regard to disease, its causes, prevention, and cure.

All those who do this will find a field of labor anywhere.

There will be suffering ones, plenty of them, who will need help, not only among those of our own faith, but largely among those who know not the truth.

The shortness of time demands an energy that has not been aroused among those who claim to believe the present truth.

1 of the fears that sometimes I hear people within our church say is they say, we don't want to be known as, you know, like Sabbath keepers and vegetarianism or something like that.

But she was actually told that we were meant to be known to the world by the advanced principles of our health message.

The Lord has made it so that the world knows about this people because God has blessed us with this message.

It's God that has blessed us with this message.

So as a gift more difficult to buy and sell, what would we do for medical missionary work?

If it was difficult to buy or sell, it would be hard to use all the standard accoutrements of the medical system.

Could it be that evidence-based research has been conducted comparing head-to-head drug medication and natural remedies.

And in many cases, the natural remedies are as good or better than the pharmaceutical drugs and often with significantly less side effects.

And I have a whole series about this, but I'm just going to share with you a few of the principles tonight.

And now we recognize that in acute situations, you know, drugs may be necessary to save lives, especially in acute situations.

But what if in many cases, there are actually healthier, safer options?

So for instance, let's talk about what's considered to be 1 of the greatest drugs in human history, antibiotics.

So antibiotics can slow the growth of and kill many types of infection in some cases such as before surgery antibiotics can prevent infection from occurring and they begin working within a few hours.

Your doctor may decide to give you an injection.

It's imperative that the medicine, if it's imperative that the medicine gets into your system quickly.

So when we think about antibiotics, I grew up taking antibiotics seemingly almost every year as a child, allergies and these kinds of things.

So I just took them like candy, it seemed like as a child.

But even though these may have some benefits, do they have some very serious side effects?

And we're not going to look at some out of the way little like secretive journals.

We're going to look at massive studies that have been conducted.

In the UK, a study of over 200, 000 people, it was shown that for every course of antibiotics increases someone's individual's risk of depression by 23 to 25%.

And that for every 2 to 5 courses, antibiotics increase the risk of depression by 40 to 56%, and it also raises their chances of having anxiety.

So taking antibiotics increases your chances of depression, and taking them more often increases your chances even more.

What about antibiotics and our greatest, our number 1 killer in North America, heart disease?

Well, research on over 36, 000 women reported in the European Heart Journal reveals that higher usage of antibiotics during middle age and later life is significantly correlated with cardiovascular disease events in later life.

What about we go on Parkinson's disease as reported in the journal movement disorders in nationwide case control study of Finland revealed a 41% increased risk of Parkinson's disease in people taking certain oral antibiotics.

It seemed to be a delayed effect of up to 15 years, potentially because of bacterial changes in the gut, changing what's called the microbiome.

Antibiotics may cause diseases like cancer, Parkinson's, or at least increase your likelihood of having these diseases.
