The Wise and Foolish Man

Father in Heaven, thank you so much for gathering us together this evening.

Thank you Lord for the opportunity we have to come and study your Word together.

I pray Lord that you'd help us to hear your Holy Spirit.

I pray that you would lead us, that as we read the Scriptures, it would burn in our hearts this evening, that it would draw us closer to heaven, that the things of this world will grow strangely dim as we behold your words that will point us to Jesus Christ.

So Lord, please, grace us with Thy presence now, we pray, in the name of Jesus Christ we ask amen.

Let's turn our Bibles to Matthew chapter 7.

The very last verses there, Matthew chapter 7, We're starting in verse 24.

Matthew chapter 7, let's begin there in verse 24.

Probably a very familiar passage, if not to most of us, then really to all of us.

Matthew 7 24, the Bible begins here, Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them I will liken him unto a wise man which built his house upon a rock and the rain descended and the floods came and the winds blew and beat upon that house and it fell not for it was founded upon a rock." Verse 26, "'And everyone that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man which built his house upon the sand, and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it." Friends, what's the difference between the wise and the foolish man?

Because really there's just only 2 groups here that Matthew 7 is describing at the very end here.

In verse 24 it says, Whoever hears these sayings of mine and what do with them, he's a wise man.

But in verse 26, whoever hears the sayings of mine and does not do it, he is like the foolish man that is building his house on the sand.

If the wise man builds his house upon the rock, what does that rock represent?

Let's turn our Bibles to 2 Samuel 22, 2 Samuel 22 and verse 47.

The Bible says this, The Lord liveth, and blessed be my rock, and Exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.

It is none other than God Jesus Christ So if we build upon God if we make him our foundation look from the outside The houses look exactly the same They look just as sturdy If you tested it with your own hand, it probably would not move on the 1 that's on the sand as much as the 1 that's on the rock.

But here we see the foundation has to be Jesus Christ.

It's the same passage that we are seeing here in Matthew 7 and it says this, he is like a man which built a house and dig deep and laid the foundation on a rock.

You see, the point of this part here, I know I've already mentioned it, but the Bible talks about the foundation.

When you build, you must make sure that your foundation is solid.

Now let's turn over to 1st Corinthians chapter 3 and verse 11.

We already know from 2 Samuel 22 that the rock is God, but what is our foundation?

1 Corinthians 3, verse 11, For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is who?

We must make sure that we are building upon the solid rock Jesus Christ.

How do we make building upon Jesus practical?

If we are to build upon the rock, If we are building upon Jesus Christ, really what should we be building upon?

Isaiah 40 verse 8 the Bible says this, the grass withereth, the flower fadeth, but the Word of God, a word of our God, shall stand what?

Let's also turn our Bibles to Matthew 24 and verse 35.

Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away." And we already saw it really back in Matthew chapter 7 because what?

Whoever hears the word of God and does it, he is like the man that builds his house upon the rock.

So friends, we can't just be hearers of the word, we've got to be doers.

And without getting into too much detail, Look, we have to put into action the Word of God.

We've got to put into action the Word of God.

Because You see, it's those elements that come against this house to test the house.

The reason why the house fell was because of the foundation, but really the reason why it fell is because of the wind and what else.

There were 3 elements that came against both these houses.

And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon the house what was it the rain rain comes from above then it says what floods floods come from beneath and then Winds winds come from the sides in a sense.

Okay, so from all angles We will be tested Okay from every angle maybe you think you got 1 side covered, but look, when you build a house, you got to make sure that every single nook and cranny, every single crack, every single hole is covered up.

You got to make sure that you got to protect from every single angle.

And friends, why is hearing and doing the Word of God so important?

The same parallel passage, okay, spoken about of the wise and the foolish man and building on the rock and building on the sand.

But what do these elements do to the house that is added in Luke 6 that's not mentioned in Matthew 7.

The Bible says this, He is like a man which built a house and dig deep deep and laid the foundation on a rock, and when the floods arose, the stream beat vehemently against the house and could not, what?

Could not shake it, for it was founded upon a rock." Friends, we, at the end of time, will be tested on every side.

All the wind, the rain and the flood, it will try to shake the house.

And friends, I preached a few weeks ago about the shaking, The shaking.

If you've not seen that, go back and watch it.

But I'm just going to go through briefly what this shaking is all about, okay?

That, look, wind, rain and flood will come and shake the house to test what sort of foundation it is on Isaiah 13 and verse 13 the Bible says this therefore I will shake the heavens and the earth shall remove out of her place in the wrath of the Lord of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.

Look, God is going to shake the earth 1 day and even the heavens in His fierce anger.

But look, is God the 1, as we're looking at this last little sort of parable about the man that built his house on the rock versus the sand, is God the 1 that sends rain, flood, and water?

Is God the 1 that sends rain, flood, and water?
