Daniel 11

Father in heaven, thank you so much for this day.

Thank you for gathering us together online.

And even as we're now about to study, I pray that you send us your Holy Spirit, lead and guide us, O Lord.

Help us to understand this really important chapter.

But more than that, help us to know how this applies to our life today.

So lead and guide us, O Lord, we pray, in Jesus' name, Amen.

So look, if you do have questions, feel free to post it on there.

I'll do my best to answer them as you type it out after the service or this study is over.

Let's turn the Bibles there to Daniel 11, shall we?

And Daniel 11 really is 1 of 3 chapters that are all connected.

Daniel 10 to 12 are the ones that are all really just 1 vision.

Daniel 12 is the conclusion when we see Michael shall stand up and there shall be a time of trouble.

But Daniel 11 contains pretty much the whole vision that is related to Daniel.

And so we're going to pick it up in verse 2 of Daniel chapter 11.

Behold, there shall stand up yet 3 kings in Persia, and the fourth shall be far richer than they all.

And by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grisha." This is referring to the Medo-Persian Empire.

And after Cyrus, there would be yet another 4 kings.

First was Cambyses, second would be Phalsmyrdas, third would be Darius and fourth would be Xerxes who is also known as Ahasuerus in the book of Esther.

And he is the 1 that is the far richer than they all.

And all this is mentioned in the summer school lesson.

It's something that's already taken place.

But you see, Medo-Persia here in Daniel 11 is only given 1 verse.

Of the 45 verses it has, only 1 verse is spent on the Medo-Persian Empire.

In Daniel 2 and Daniel 7, there is all kingdoms mentioned.

And in Daniel 11, Babylon is left off again and Medo-Persia is almost forgotten.

And God is trying to tell us, look, I am not interested in Medo-Persia anymore.

It was part of history, it was an important part of history, but we got to move on.

Verse 3, And a mighty king shall stand up that shall rule with great dominion and according to his will.

That mighty king is Alexander the Great, as we know.

He will stir up all the realm of Grisha in verse 2.

But how do we know that this is Alexander the Great?

And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the 4 winds of heaven, and not to his posterity.

So here is very clear because you see in Daniel chapter 7, we saw a leopard with 4 heads, and then in Daniel 8, we saw the he-goat with a great horn, but when it was broken, out of it came 4 horns.

And so here we see that When he will be broken, his kingdom or his dominion rather, would be divided towards the 4 winds of heaven and not to his posterity.

That's exactly what happened with Alexander the Great when he died.

No 1 inherited his kingdom that was his family.

It was divided amongst his generals, which was at the beginning 10 of them, which was whittled down to 4, and eventually we'll see that it became 2.

In Daniel 11, it is really, really important that we know who these 4 generals are.

The first is Seleucus, then it is Ptolemy, and Lysimachus, and Cassander.

And so these are the 4 generals that fought over Alexander the Great's kingdom and it was divided into 4 sections.

Seleucus would be the 1 that would eventually conquer the kingdoms of Cassander and Lysimachus.

Seleucus was considered the king of the north.

And he was in that area from Greece all the way down from Rome up there and around to the side.

And Daniel 11 is a repeat and enlarge of chapter 2, 7 and 8, giving even more detail.

So really, what we see from verse 5, so we've read up until verse 4 already, from 5 to 16, it is really talking about the kingdom of Greece.

It is talking about the king of the north and the king of the south, and how they would be having civil war between each other the whole time.

I wanna show you the detail to which this goes to.

This is how much detail we're given in Daniel 11, okay?

And in the end of years, they shall join themselves together for the king's daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement.

The king of the north and the king of the south.

You see, since Alexander the Great died, they were fighting amongst each other for total dominion of the whole kingdom, but they could never do it.

So finally in verse 6 it says, at the end of years they'll join themselves together.

For the king's daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement.

So Ptolemy Philadelphus, remember Ptolemy is king of the south, Seleucus is king of the north.

Ptolemy Philadelphus, the king's daughter of the south, he sent his daughter, Bernice, to marry Antiochus Theos, who was king of the north.

And in doing so, Antiochus, the king of the north, he had to put away his current wife, whose name was Laodice, and she already was with child.

So verse 6 it says, at the end of the years they shall join themselves together for the king's daughter of the south, Bernice, would come to the king of the north to make an agreement, King Antiochus Theos.

So they would get married, but in getting married he would have to put away his current wife, king of the north, his current wife.

However, verse 6 continues, but she shall not retain the power of the arm.

It was it was Antiochus Theos' second wife, Bernice, who had come from the king of the south.

She married him, he put away his current wife, but she would not retain the power.

So Antiochus and Bernice were married for about 2 years, but eventually he would tire of his second wife and go back to his former wife, Laodice, who already had child with him.

And so that she is referring to Bernice, and He would not stand.

Because even though he went back to Laodice, she did not trust him anymore.

Eventually, she would poison him and kill him.

Friends, never ever, ever deal with woman's wrath.

Anyways, he was poisoned by his first wife, Leodice.

She wanted to make sure that her son would be the 1 that would rise to power.

But she shall be given up, and they that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthened her in these times.

It is referring to Bernice, the 1 that married the king of the north.
