Imagine meeting someone who says, I don't need the law, I don't believe in the law.

I take a couple steps backward from that kind of person on this episode of Inverse.

Now, here's your host, Justin Kim, with Inverse.

My name's Justin Kim, and in our Inverse Studio, we have Jonathan, Callie, and Siku with us.

We're looking at the topic of the covenants.

We spent about 7 weeks looking at different aspects of the old and the new covenants, and the old and new covenant responses and experiences, and all the contracts, and a lot of these words are kind of like up there.

Good to see you and so happy to see you in your in your best.

Yes and we are on the external, we are all shiny, wonderful human beings, but inside we are in need of...

We're going to go to Romans chapter 6 and we're going to look at how we are actually dead people inside and we're trying to pretend to be alive.

But We're going to have a word of prayer and we're going to go to the text.

Let's go to Romans chapter 6 verses 1 through 23.

Well, we'll take it slower and Siku if you can pray for us.

Loving Father, thank you for the gift of your word.

Thank you for the opportunity to study it.

Thank you for the promise of the Holy Spirit who can enlighten our minds, help us to understand these deep truths, that we may come to a clearer knowledge of you, and that that knowledge of you would transform our lives.

We pray that your blessing will be during this time.

Jonathan, I wanted to ask you, I mean we've talked a lot a lot of theological terms, a lot of this like like kind of church language, theology language, and what what has all this discussion, what has that really revealed about yourself?

I mean I kind of joked around that we are these evil people on the inside and shiny on the outside, but joking aside, what deeper insights have you gained about yourself through this study?

I've noticed that, that's a very good question.

As I analyze my life and, you know, when before Jesus, after Jesus and all those things, before Jesus there is this, we really, It's a self-deception that we're living.

We're trying to figure out the mess that we are in.

We're trying to deal with it in our own way.

I've noticed that I definitely did that for a large portion of my life.

And when Jesus came into my life, when I, you know, He offered that, hey, He can deal with all these issues.

And this is very simple, simplified, but the covenant, study in the covenants really, you know, uses this theological language to express those realities and that's something I noticed.

Yeah, too often theology kind of like goes up there right and down here I mean we got issues and that's then this is why TV talk shows like Oprah and Dr.

They all deal with everyday issues, but they may deal with it in very human ways.

And if you will, maybe even in old covenant ways to deal with old covenant problems.

Yeah, just try harder, use more of this, use these techniques.

And there some of them are efficacious, but at the end they all have their limitations and they all have to come to the foot of Romans chapter 6.

And none of them deal with a sin problem.

It's usually just the symptoms, not the root.

And for me, it just makes, I realized that the shininess they want to keep on the outside, it's more of an indication of my un-shininess on the inside.

And before you judge me, we're all like that, yeah?

So let's go to Romans chapter 6, verse 1, and Callie, if you can read verse 1 for us.

How shall we who die to sin live any longer in it?

Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

Therefore we were buried with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

For if we have been united together in the likeness of his death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of his resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with him that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.

For he who has died has been freed from sin.

Again, we are in Paul, we are in the book of Romans.

And I've realized for future episodes and for past, when we slow things down, it makes a little bit more clear.

So in verses 1 through 7 that we just read, Siku, What are some insights that you see from those passages?

The first thing that I notice is he's coming from, Paul is coming from having talked about the wonderful grace of God.

You know, what God does for us in Jesus Christ, what he makes available to us.

And the temptation can be the temptation he's trying to start dealing with here is, in light of what Jesus has done, then, you know, if I sin, I just repent, right?

I sin and repent, sin and repent, sin and repent.

And Jesus will always forgive me because he's got this abundant grace.

And you know, where sin abounds, grace more abounds, which means I can sin more and then I'll have more grace.

And he's saying that's actually a delusion.

He's like, so shall we sin that grace may abound?

Actually what happens is When we experience grace, it does something in us that we no longer want to live a life of sin.

And so now he goes into explaining kind of mechanics of what that experience is like, you know, leaving that life of sin behind and now living a graceful life.

And just an analogy that comes to my mind is, so think about if you're in prison, right?

And you're shackled and God gives the grace, that's the signifying sin.

And then God comes and He frees you and you're like, great, but I want to go back there and then you can just rescue me over and over again.

It's like you never experienced the freedom and you miss the whole point of him taking you out there in the first place.

And that kind of foolishness of like, thanks for my 5 seconds of freedom, I'm gonna go back into prison.

That's how foolish it is to have that mentality of let me just keep sinning, so I'll get more grace.

Like you misunderstand what sin does to you.

You misunderstand that it's literally shackling yourself again.

And there are some people who in their spiritual experience, this is exactly what you described is, I sin.

The only reason why they go to church is to undo their sin and they go back and then they go sin.

And then there are perhaps institutions and religious organizations that really profit off of sin.
