Father in heaven, thank you so much for this time of study we have once more.

Your grace has kept us through this past week, and as we're in the Sabbath hours once more, we ask that you would please grace us with thy presence Lord.

Lead us as we're about to study your word.

Help us to understand that we might know how to apply these words to our lives this evening for we pray in Jesus name, Amen.

And our study this evening is entitled Jesus' Encounter on the Road to Emmaus.

Well, at this time, Christ has already resurrected.

News has gotten out that his tomb is empty, but there's still disappointment and discouragement in the air.

Let's turn to our first text found in Luke 24 and verse 13.

The Bible says this, And behold, 2 of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem, about 3 score furlongs.

Now, 3 score furlongs is about 11 kilometers.

And they are walking to Emmaus, away from Jerusalem.

And you know, 11 kilometers, that's probably about half a day's journey, depending on how fast you walk.

And of course, the road that they were going through was not just 1 straight road and flat and even.

They had to go over rocks, they had to climb up and down so it was much slower than just a standard walk but it was probably about half a day's journey.

And we continue to read in Luke 24, and now verse 14.

And they talked together of these things which had happened.

And it came to pass that while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near and went with them, but their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these, that ye have 1 to another as ye walk, and are sad?

Well they were talking about what had happened, the crucifixion, the missing body of Jesus and as they're talking Jesus connects himself with them but they don't know that it's him.

It says that their eyes were holden And he pretends not to know what's going on, and he asks them, Why are you so sad?

So obviously their conversation and their countenances were showing that they were not very happy.

And They didn't know that it was Christ, they couldn't discern His presence because they were focusing so much on their disappointment and their grief.

What happens after Jesus asks them, what's going on?

Let's continue reading in verse 18 of Luke 24.

And the 1 of them whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem?

And hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

And they said unto him, concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet, mighty indeed, and word before God and all the people and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death and have crucified him.

But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel.

And beside all this, today is the third day since these things were done." You know, Jesus, he pretended not to know, pardon me, I think I didn't let you see the whole text, but Jesus he pretended not to know what was going on.

He thought, they thought that he must have been a stranger.

Don't you know what's going on in Jerusalem?

How can you walk through that city and not know what had happened with Jesus?

Some man that was so famous and now he died and now his tomb is missing and we were hoping, no not his tomb, the body in his tomb was missing and they were hoping that what?

They just thought he was a prophet and nothing else.

Throughout the ministry of Jesus, He had given ample evidence that He was more than just human, more than just a prophet, that He was the Son of God.

He had made those claims all the time to people that he healed, to people that he conversed with.

Look at what he says to the woman at the well after he reads her heart and her past in John 4 25 to 26.

The woman saith unto him, I know that Messiah's cometh, which is called Christ.

When he is come, he will tell us all things.

Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

The woman, she even though from Samaria, was also looking for the Messiah.

And he explicitly says out plainly that he is the Messiah, the 1 that you're speaking to.

Further on as we continue to read in John 6 to the crowds that he taught this was a very pivotal chapter in the book of John but in verse 48 he says I am the bread of life And then in verse 51 he says, I am the living bread which came down from heaven if any man eat of this bread he shall live forever and the bread that I will give is my flesh which I will give for the life of the world.

So he says, I am that bread, and if you eat of me, you're gonna live forever.

That doesn't sound like just the normal human being, does it?

And he said, therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me except it were given unto him of my father and that father there he's not referring to his his dad his father on earth but the Father in heaven from that time look at verse 66 many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him.

Jesus was not shy about telling people that he was the son of God.

If you want to live forever, He says, you got to eat of me and I will go and speak to my Father in heaven.

He's the 1 that will give you eternal life.

And it's in John 6 that we read that because of that many people stopped following Him.

But the claims of Christ were clear throughout his ministry on earth.

He was not just a human being called by God to give a message.

And he fulfilled all the prophecies in the Old Testament concerning the Messiah.

And yet people thought he was still just a prophet.

And on top of that, the general feeling was that what these 2 men expressed, you see, they thought that Jesus would come and redeem Israel.

And by that, they don't mean that He would come and redeem them from sin.

No, because He did do that by dying on the cross.

But they came and they thought that He would come to redeem Israel from the Roman bondage, that he would come as a king and rule for them and rule over all their enemies, which their number 1 enemy at that time was Rome.

So in a time when the whole world should have been rejoicing, They were all sad.

Jesus had already resurrected and moreover he was standing right next to them and they didn't even know it.

Their misunderstanding of Scripture had blinded them and robbed them of the faith and hope and joy that they should have had when they compared what was happening in the life of Christ and what happened over that weekend compared to the Scriptures.

You know, friends, sometimes we're like that as well.

Expectations what our life should be like after we accept Christ.

We expect things to get better all of a sudden because God is with us.

We wonder why things get worse when we accept Jesus and not get better.

We get discouraged, we get disappointed because things don't turn out the way that We want it to turn out.

It doesn't meet our expectations, you see.

And so we focus on all the negatives, all the discouragements, not realizing that God allowed all of this to happen for a reason.

We misunderstand God and who He is and how He works, we don't understand His will.

And in the midst of all that wrong focus, we don't see Jesus and He's actually standing right there next to us wanting to guide us.

These men, along with a whole of the Jewish nation, had totally misunderstood the mission of Christ, the purpose of the Messiah.

Yes, He was to be the Savior, not of the Jewish nation from Roman bondage, but he was to be the savior of the world from sin.

And that is what they should, you know, that which should have been good news became bad news to them.

Jesus was crucified and now his body was missing.

In Luke 24 and verse 22 to 24, we continue.

Yea, and certain woman also of our company made us astonished which were early at the sepulcher.

And when they found not his body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels which said that he was alive.

And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulcher and found it even as so the woman had said.

But him they saw not." These were obviously the disciples of Christ or those that were very close to the disciples of Christ because you see Jesus' body was missing and they heard about how certain woman went to the tomb and found it missing and not only that they had seen a vision of angels that was Mary.

That news should have been uplifting but it didn't even move a needle in their hearts towards joy.

The mention of angels should have been good news, but they didn't believe, obviously, that these women had seen angels.
