The Definitive Place of COVID-19 in Biblical Eschatology

I am a pulmonary and critical care specialist.

I have my associate professorship at Loma Linda University as well as University of California Riverside.

And I think 1 of the things that we're going to talk about today definitively is the title, the definitive place of COVID-19 in biblical eschatology.

But it's kind of an attention grabber, and as you'll find out, this talk is actually about much more than just COVID-19.

Actually, there's very little to do with COVID-19 in here because biblical eschatology is so much bigger than that.

And it talks about where we, we're gonna talk about where we are in the stream of time.

So if we, before we get started though, let's have a word of prayer and just bow your heads with me.

Dear Heavenly Father, please be with us today as we look at your word and where we are in the stream of that time, and where we are going and what it is that we need to be concerned about with right now in thy name, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Okay, so we're going to move quickly and I hope you'll be able to keep up.

It's after lunch, so I know that sometimes you can get a little drowsy.

So just try to wake up, shake off the things, and here we go.

So as Seventh-day Adventists, we know about the prophecies of Daniel chapter 8 and Daniel chapter 9.

We know very well that these prophecies were given to us and it was a time prophecy.

And in fact, this is the last time prophecy, the prophecy that ended on October 22nd, 1844.

As it turns out, we were very clear about when this was going to happen, but we were not very clear about what it was that was going to happen, and that's why this led to the Great Disappointment, okay?

All of the prophecies after 1844 are the flip of that.

We know exactly what is going to happen, we just don't know when it's going to happen.

And if someone tells you that they know when something is going to happen, I would be very dubious about that.

And so the thing that we've been given as Seventh-day Adventists has to do with the 3 angels' messages.

I'm not going to read it for you because you know what it is.

Essentially, the first angels' message is that judgment has come.

And finally, number 3, don't get the mark of the beast.

But I think more than anything else, because let's face it, the 3 angels' messages actually started before 1844.

The single text in the Bible that I believe has to do with us as Seventh-day Adventists more than any other text, the 1 text in the Bible that we can point to and say, that is ours is Revelation chapter 10, verses 10 and 11.

And I took the little book out of the angel's hand and ate it up, and it was in my mouth, sweet as honey, and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.

And he said unto me, and here it is, this is what it boils down to, thou must prophesy again before many peoples and nations and tongues and kings.

And that is what we have been tasked with.

You are an ambassador from heaven, and this, you have to embody the foreign policy of heaven on this earth as that ambassador.

And what is the foreign policy of heaven on this earth as that ambassador and what is the foreign policy of heaven on this earth it is that text that is the bottom line that is your instructions if we need to know if we want to know where we are in the stream of prophecy, we need to know what prophecy is telling us.

And I love this chart because I can prove to you that I had nothing to do with this chart because it was created before I was even born.

In 1970, Gordon Colyer, you can actually get this chart at ceilingtime.com and you can purchase it there.

But the thing I like about this is that it divides the time period from 1844, which is the last time prophecy, until the end, into 3 compartments.

That's something that I want you to remember.

The first compartment is going from 1844 to the National Sunday Law.

The second component is going from star 2 to star 3, which is from the National Sunday Law to the close of probation.

And when I say the close of probation, I mean the close of probation on the very last person on the planet Earth, okay?

Because we know that when does judgment begin in the house of the Lord?

This is when Michael stands up in Daniel chapter 12.

This is when Jesus Christ stands up and his work is done in the most holy.

And then the period of time from the close of probation to the second coming of Christ is this third period.

It is where the plagues are falling, okay?

So let's talk a little bit about the things that are happening during these periods of time, because I think it's very important to understand that as we move forward.

In this first period of time, which is where we are, how do I know we're there?

Well, because there's no National Sunday Law at this point, right?

This is where the church is being justified, the dead is being judged.

We are supposed to be preaching the 3 angels' messages, which is, according to Ellen White, justification by faith.

We also have righteousness by faith, which is what we are learning about, but we are not yet completely righteous, are we?

Because we are living in sin still, that's the problem.

Now I want you to be clear what the difference is between the former rain and the latter rain.

Do you know what the difference is between the former rain and the latter rain?

It does not make you clean, it seals you.

That may come as a surprise to some of you.

You have to be clean before the latter rain falls.

This is where we are supposed to be turning away from sin.

Now, Is the latter rain falling right now?

After number 2, some point, we don't know exactly when, but God, Jesus in heaven, God in heaven in the most holy place will switch.

They will no longer be judging the dead, they will move on to the what?

And when they are done, as someone's name comes up in the judgment, when they are done judging that person, can that person change?

It's gonna be really hard for God to be judging people over and over.

So what has to happen to that person they have to be seals and what is gonna be doing the ceiling the latter a So the church is sanctified at this point.

The judging of the living is going to occur after the National Sunday Law, and it's gonna start where?

It's gonna be you and me who have the books on the shelf, Not the guy in darkest Peru who has never heard of the name of Jesus Christ.

So, the living are being judged, Sunday law persecution is occurring during this time, there is a loud cry to leave Babylon.

There's another thing that the latter rain does.

The latter rain, in addition to sealing those that have been sealed, it also calls people in Babylon, out of Babylon, into the church.

Okay, that's the other role of the latter rain.

Sealing begins with the Seventh-day Adventist.

There is no sin in that church at this point would you want to have said when you're sealed so we go to the only meadows every year before there was a fire in in california northern california and we would always do ceramics so we my wife always makes me my wife is sitting right here she always says okay if you know we you know it's time to do so we gotta go to ceramics and we always get a little Christmas ornament, because every year we gotta make the Christmas ornament, and we gotta paint something new on there, and then before it's done, it's got to go into the iron, right?

Once you fire it, can you make any changes?

AMEN 2021: While It Is Day

So we had just gotten back from Thailand.

We were there to celebrate our 25th anniversary in January, but it was actually almost our 26th wedding anniversary.

And on the way back, we became aware, well, while we were there, of this thing called COVID.

Now, we were having a great time in Thailand, and it was not really, didn't really bother us too much.

We flew through Tokyo, and we were quite thrilled with life.

I flew actually here to this hotel because I was lecturing at a CME course.

And when I got back to Boston, I work at a large teaching hospital in Boston, and the hallways were empty.

And I recognized that something very serious was going on.

Nobody heard about New York, etc., etc., But something very serious was going on.

And Sabbath morning, about 2 weeks later, I was out running.

And prior to that time, I had read this article that my twin sister and Mark Finley had put together on COVID.

And they did the medical part of it and then there was the pastoral or theological part of dealing with COVID.

And I was out running on my 6 mile run 1 Sabbath morning.

Yes, I have to wake up so I run Sabbath morning just to get me ready for the day.

And I was running through my neighborhood and an overwhelming feeling came over me that my neighbors did not know Jesus Christ.

And it was an overwhelming feeling of foreboding that people were going to die from COVID without knowing Jesus.

And I thought, what have I done for my neighbors?

And I decided I was going to do something about it.

I decided I was going to take some points from this particular science of the time and make it into a handout to give to our neighbors.

My care for people had not, that was not the first time.

In 2008, I was at an ASI convention and Mark Finley preached on Pentecost revisited.

And in that talk, he mentioned an Ellen White quote about children of God going from place to place in the time of the end.

And I remember thinking, no, they did not.

It was quite a dramatic story that happened to me at that particular meeting.

But my love for people changed at that meeting.

And so I decided that we were going to care for our neighbors and we were going to go door to door, this was in 2008, and get Bible studies all up and down our street.

I'm showing you this picture of my husband and me for a reason.

I was enthusiastic about going door to door.

My husband was not, not because he doesn't care for people, but he tends to be more reserved and kind of guards people's spaces.

So it was September of 2008, and we were having dinner.

And I was so excited because we were going to pass out cards to the neighbors.

And we, I made these wonderful formal invitations to, to come, and I, I couldn't believe we were eating dinner, and the day had arrived.

And I looked beside me at my precious husband, and it looked as though he had a terrible case of indigestion.

And then I looked at him further, and it looked as though he was praying, Oh Lord Jesus, I know it's September, But please send a snowstorm of epic proportions that we won't have to go out door knocking.

Or send a big hail storm with hail the size of golf balls, never heard of before, that will make the streets impassable or a big flood." and it was obvious he did not want to go.

But as a dutiful husband, a devoted husband, he went with me and that began our ministry to our neighbors.

And so this is the quote that Pastor Finley quoted, servants of God with their faces lighted up and shining with holy consecration will hasten from place to place to proclaim the message from heaven.

And that was the point where I said that the Lord did not see me going from place to place.

And I was rebuked and deeply smitten because of my recognition of my failure.

We got bible studies out of that first entrance into our neighborhood, but with this second foray into the neighborhood, I made a handout.

It was a three-page handout, and what I did is I synthesized some of the material that was in there, and it included these things, get plenty of rest, eat a good plant-based diet, drink lots of water, get adequate fresh exercise, and hot and cold baths.

And believe it or not, the neighbors responded.

People sent us nice cards saying, how nice of you to care about us in this horrible pandemic.

So we got cards in the mailbox, we had people calling, and a man said to me, you know, I've been doing those hot and cold baths, I've never felt better.

People were thrilled that Bob and I would care for them.

And at the end of it, I included recipes, and I don't know what came over me.

But at the end of it, I said, and when this thing is over, we will have a cooking school in our home.

I've never done a cooking school in my whole life.

My sister and I did a little cooking school 1 time, and it was quite hilarious.

But we did it, but I'd never done this before.

But I must admit the Holy Spirit or some other spirit, but I put that into the, the handout.

And I thought that this was in March when I did this.

I thought, oh, this will be in June or July.

It's amazing how physicians can be naive.

I thought this pandemic was just going to pass us over and in June or July we'll be fine.

We'll have people to our home, no problem.

It wasn't until about August, about July or so, I recognized we're in for the long haul.

1 of my friends happened to call me, who also got involved with us, and he said, how are you doing?

I said, I don't know how to have a plant-based cooking school in the pandemic, and people can't come to our house.

There was no problem, we can do it by Zoom.

I thought a cooking school would Zoom, they can't smell the smells and see the food, et cetera, et cetera.

And so I decided that we were going to have a hybrid sort of a thing.

Even though I'm a physician, I do believe in food and natural remedies being the first line of therapy.

My husband will tell you I don't even like taking an aspirin.

If I feel I can go for a run or drink a glass of water and get well, I'm in.

No disease that can be treated by diet should be treated with any other means.

Moses Maimonides was a Jewish physician and philosopher living from 1135 to 1204.

And he was persecuted, he was in exile, and he decided that simple remedies should be tried well before drugs should be tried.

And so we decided to send out invitations to the neighborhood.

So I made these very fanciful invitations.

Now, my husband and I go by Bob and Andy, but when we sent this invitation out first, no 1 responded.

And someone said, we need to put doctor on the front.

So we put doctors, Bob and Andy Hunsaker.

We said, it's the truth, the gospel truth.

And you know, we said the first 6 people to register will be admitted.

And the state of Massachusetts had a limit.

We said, well, if you walk, No 1 will count the cars.

All In: Lessons Learned From Medical Training and Starting a Private Practice in a Pandemic

I'm a dermatologist and I'm a Mohs surgeon in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Collegedale, Tennessee is my hometown and that's where I'm presenting from tonight.

And I wish very much I could be there in person, but, and I had every intention to, but unfortunately, my family and I came down with what we think was RSV earlier this week and didn't want to share that with everybody out there.

So fortunately, my wife and 4 kids are doing better, although not fully 100%.

So, but I'm really grateful to be able to still do this presentation tonight and I'm thankful for this technology.

Tonight, I'm gonna be presenting on a topic that basically encompasses a little bit of my story, as well as the starting of a private practice that I did over the past year.

And before we get started, I'm just gonna have a word of prayer and I'll share my screen here so you can see my title page.

So if you'll just bow your heads, we'll go ahead and get started with prayer.

Dear Father in heaven, thank you so much for this evening.

And we're really privileged to be able to connect even amid the miles apart.

And We also are thankful to be serving such an amazing God.

And thank you that you've given us a calling on our hearts to treat people with illness, not only of the body, but also of the soul.

And may we be able to encourage 1 another tonight.

And I pray that your spirit will be with the listeners and with me as I present.

Well, the title of my presentation is all in lessons learned from medical training and starting a private dermatology practice in a pandemic.

And this is U-Derm is the name of my practice.

And that logo represents what is most important to us, which is the patient and the employee, those 2 individuals facing each other in the U.

And so I have objectives here per CME requirements.

Basically, I'm going to describe what my experience was in starting a practice, as well as the importance of practical spirituality in private practice, discuss different ways of incorporating prayer into a busy medical practice and encourage you all and challenge you in your faith.

And this first slide just demonstrates a collage of photos from my upbringing.

I was fortunate to be brought up in a God-fearing home.

And I was born to 2 parents who are multi-generation Avenis.

I feel like I really have a good understanding of Avenis culture and heritage.

In fact, my wife over the past couple of weeks, I'm gonna stop screen share for a minute, I'll be toggling back and forth.

My wife over the past couple of weeks found a book and it was called Happy Home Farms.

And she told me, hey, your relative wrote this.

And sure enough, it was like a great uncle who wrote this book and described his experience in North Dakota on a farm.

And so I found stuff out about my ancestors that I didn't know existed.

And to see that God has been with my family, I've been very fortunate.

And so I have a lot of things to be grateful for.

But even growing up, I took God and a relationship with God for granted.

I don't feel that I actually knew him personally until I would say late high school or college.

I went through all the Adventist schools and I had a great Adventist education, but a lot of that time I just was being spoon-fed my own religion and I didn't actually pursue got personally on my own until I was a little older and it really wasn't until college and the academic struggles that I encountered that drew me closer to the Lord And so it went from early on in high school, praying to the God, more of a monologue of asking for help in a traditional prayer to more of a dialogue with journaling.

And I would actually journal and I would write Bible verses in response.

And it was really a very growing time for me in college to see God's faithfulness through academic challenges.

And so I'm gonna toggle back here and share the screen again.

And so the first hurdle for me was in terms of medicine was the MCAT.

And for any of you who are in medical school currently in the audience or who are physicians, you know what the MCAT is like.

And for me, I was very intimidated by this test.

And I did okay in college, but to me, the standardized test was a bit of a hurdle.

And I remember along the way, because I did a nursing degree in college because I wasn't sure if I wanted to do medicine.

And in fact, along the way I kind of changed started heading toward nu and worked in the ICU and then decided to do me I was studying for the M.

Daunting and I studied fo I took this exam and I was really excited.
