Wait on the Lord

Please bow your heads with me for prayer.

Father in heaven, Lord, I thank you for being present here, and we just want to invite you once again.

God, I ask that I be placed aside and you lift it up this morning.

That lives will be changed, mine included.

And that you will give us an extra portion of your Holy Spirit as we begin this New Year of 2006.

As I laid there on my hospital bed, My eyes filled with tears as I realized what had happened the previous days.

The summer of 2004, I went to Athens, Greece to take Hebrew.

It was an intensive, about 6 weeks long, it was actually a year of Hebrew packed into 6 weeks, it was very intense.

And I made it through about half of it and we had gone to this island And I got really sick.

And it's a long story, I can't share all the details, but we had to take the cruise ship back to Athens.

We had been out on this island and my fever went up to about 105 and then back down and up and down.

And I was sick for a few days, I couldn't eat.

And they took me to the hospital, they checked me, they did every test that, well not every test that they can I'm sure, but they did plenty of tests.

And then they sent me back to my hotel, they didn't know what was wrong.

They gave me an antibiotic, they thought it might be a virus.

And I was back at the hotel and my teacher said, Sean, we've got to take you back to the hospital.

And so they took me back and they did some more tests.

They did a sonogram and that was pretty interesting.

And they were going to send me home again.

They said, well, we're not sure what's wrong.

It may be, they checked my kidneys, they said it might be appendicitis, but we don't know.

And my teacher said, look, you guys got to know before he leaves here.

So they admitted me into the hospital and it's funny because once they heard that I had insurance from the States that was covered 100%, they became quite friendly.

And so they admitted me in, and I don't know if any of you have been to Greece, but what I found to happen pretty often is that you walk into these buildings, the front's very nice, very western, very American, and you've got marble floors and just very advanced, and then you go into the rooms or you go upstairs and it's hard to believe you're in the same building.

Well that happened, I went upstairs from the elevator, excuse me, I went up in the elevator and walked out and I had a hard time believing I was in the same building.

I mean, it reminded me of my dorm at Southern, the green walls.

And it was just kind of dirty and I remember following the nurse and I asked her, I said, well, do I need to change into a robe?

And she said, no, we don't have those here.

I'm thinking, you know, I better call and tell my parents.

And I had this impression on my heart to call and talk to Dr.

Rachel's father, for those of you that know her.

Because he's the head elder of my church back in Kansas.

So I got into the room, I got my calling card out and I called my mom and said, Mom, I'm in the hospital, I might have surgery tonight.

Last she had heard, I had the flu or something, so she was pretty scared about that.

And I was on the phone and the nurse comes in And she starts to try to unbutton my shirt.

And I went to try to help her, because she was having a hard time.

And I took that with a grain of salt, you know, I know they have 12-hour shifts.

So I figured they may have longer ones over there, I don't know.

And she left, she checked my temperature, and I wasn't worried.

Then the doctor comes in, and he was even rougher.

And that kind of bothered me, because I thought if he was going to treat me like that when I was awake, what was going to happen when I was not, you know?

And it was bad enough at that point that I had sat up on my bed, I was about to take my IV out of my arm and walk out of the hospital.

I mean, no 1 was sure what was wrong anyhow.

And as I went to take that out, the Lord impressed me to pray.

So I sat back in my bed and I said, it was very simple, I said, Lord, I know that you led me here to Greece, because it was very clear.

He had opened the door and I said, God, I know that you didn't lead me here to die, so please take care of me.

And I said amen, and about 5 seconds later the phone rang.

And I said hello, and The man on the other end said, hello, this is Dr.

Jason Trago from the United States Embassy.

Your teacher just called me and he said you're in a hospital and that you know me.

Trago and I remembered all of a sudden this doctor I knew 12 years before or maybe 11 or 10.

My brother and I used to sit in his living room Sunday mornings and Watch his great-aunt Hazel for him.

I was just a kid And he was a good friend of dr.

Mills said, get him out of there, don't let him have surgery.

Then he heard that it had been 5 days and that it was probably appendicitis.

So he remembers at the last moment that Dr.

Trego this, and he's like, wow, how are you doing?

And he asked me what had been happening, and I told him I got sick, I got better, I'm sick again.

The first certainty, I think, in the whole process.

And I think it was called retroacute appendicitis, if I remember correctly.

And That's why I had so much pain in my back.

So he came over, he checked me out, and I could tell he was concerned.

And after having done a physical examination, he was certain, well he told me about 95% certain that it was ruptured because of the pain I was in.
