01 The House That God Built

Our Father in heaven, we are so thankful for your great love and mercies and this week Lord we we just spent a day, a holiday, where we gathered together with family, with friends, to thank you for the many blessings you bestow upon us.

But the reality Lord is that every day is a thanksgiving because you provide for us every day.

And so, Lord, we have gathered here because we wanna learn more about you.

Father, we can't do that without the presence of the Holy Spirit.

We are reminded that spiritual things are spiritually discerned.

So Lord, we ask for the blood of Christ to wash away our sin, but we ask also for the mighty outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

Not because we deserve it, Lord, we don't, but because we desperately need it.

We know that there is nothing in us that commends, Lord, your work on our behalf except our great need, and that moves your hand.

May your angels form around this gathering, and in particular this series, a ring of fire that the evil 1 will not be permitted to annoy.

Give us ears to hear, eyes to see, a mind to perceive.

We ask it of you, dear God, and we thank you as we ask this in Jesus' precious name.

I want to once again welcome friends and guests to our Unlocking the mysteries of the sanctuary series.

So I see a number of faces here that I don't know.

And so I'm going to share a little bit about myself so you know a little bit about me.

And then I'll share a little bit of my history with the sanctuary as well as some thoughts on the series before we launch in.

My name is George Baute, and I am the pastor here at the Hayden Lake Church.

And I come here with a varied background.

I have been a high school teacher, a college instructor.

I have been a youth pastor, a district pastor, a hospice chaplain, and an academy chaplain.

So I have held a number of different titles.

But my favorite is that of husband and father.

I have my beautiful Southern Belle here, Sue Ellen, and my precious daughter sitting next to her, my son in the back.

I grew up in Southern California, lived in North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, and now Idaho.

My family is originally from the island of Cuba, and they came to the United States in search for freedom.

And our background, My father was atheist.

My mother was a devout Catholic who later studied her Bible and read herself into the Protestant faith and movement.

And I want to share now, just so that's a little bit about me.

As we go along, I will share more about me.

I have a very deep interest for people and their journey.

But I want to share with you now a little bit of my interest in the sanctuary, why I have an interest in the sanctuary.

My interest began actually when I was 10 years old.

My mother at this time was now attending the Adventist church, and I at 10 went to a VBS, a Vacation Bible School.

And I believe it was the only 1 I ever went to, to be quite honest.

But this VBS, which was located, which took place in Glendale, their theme for this vacation Bible school was the sanctuary.

And whoever put this thing together put a lot of work into it.

They put together an Ark of the Covenant made of wood and it was very well done.

It was beautifully done and then on top they had these 2 angels made of wood and inside they had put together a 10 Commandments.

You know how we typically Understand the shape to be made out of wood then they xeroxed the commandments and they glued it on to this this this this wooden commandments And they made it look like stone and in my home growing up my mother even though we were Catholic and we were taught that we couldn't understand the Bible don't read it my mother understood it to be God's book and That made it holy and that inside were God's 10 commandments, and that those 10 commandments were holy.

So growing up, my mom really impressed this on us, and as a ten-year-old, I can remember when I held those 10 commandments in my hand that it actually gave me chills that I was holding this document in my hand that was God's commandments.

It left such an incredible impression upon me.

But later as I grew older I walked away from God and I'll share a little bit about that story too as we go along.

You know, in Southern California, living right there near your Hollywood, there's a lot of world to jump into, okay?

Later, when I came back to the Lord, and I began to attend church again, the topic of the sanctuary came up many times in some of the circles of discussion.

And I heard some people say, oh, the sanctuary is so important for us Christians today.

And then I would hear others say, oh, the sanctuary really is irrelevant to Christians today.

And I would sit there and I think to myself, well, both of those things can't possibly be true.

I opened my Bible and I began to study the matter for myself.

And as I did, I came to the realization that the sanctuary is extremely important and relevant for Christians today.

And we're gonna learn that as we go through these presentations.

Later, God led me to put together the lessons that we're gonna be going through.

And these lessons are actually, I'm actually working to have them printed and made available to others to be able to teach and to share others the wonderful views and things found in the sanctuary.

Now, 1 thing about me you're gonna learn really fast is I am a very practical person.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but you can't live there.

So for me, the sanctuary, whatever I learn in the Bible, if it isn't relevant and practical, I have other things I need to do.

And so, these presentations are going to be very practical, personal, and relevant.

Now, when we're talking about the sanctuary, there is so much in there that time would not allow us a lifetime to get to the bottom of it.

So what I'm going to do in these presentations is we're going to study the highlights.

I'm going to focus my our presentations on the furniture.

There is a message in each 1 of those furnishings that God gave to us to understand.

We will make some forays into some of the festivals, as well as into some of the sacrifices and whatnot.

But as I said, there's so much to go into that time just wouldn't allow it.

So for the sake of our series we're going to hit the high points.

And you're going to find that the sanctuary message is a very simple message.

And yet in that simplicity it is profound.

I'm going to divide the series into 2 parts, our introductory and advanced.

The introductory part is going to focus on what the Bible refers to as the outer court, where we have the brazen altar and the labor of water, and also on the holy place where we have the table of showbread, the menorah and the golden altar.

This is going to be the introductory portion and this portion is going to be all about a relationship with Jesus.

Did you know that the sanctuary actually teaches us how to have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Then the second part, which is the advanced part, is going to be in the Most Holy Place.

The Most Holy Place is the prophetic section.

Actually, the whole sanctuary is a prophetic timeline, we're going to see that, but the Most Holy Place focused specifically on end time prophecy.

And it's really interesting, notice the progression.

First comes a relationship with Jesus, Don't miss that.

Then you put that relationship in the context of end time prophecy.

And that's what we're going to be doing as we go through these sections.

Now, what I'd like to do is go ahead and get started on our lesson.

And you have your documents there, feel free to make comments, write on those, then go home, get a three-hole punch, You can put it inside your lesson, and I'll tell you why.

02 The Outer Court and The Brazen Altar

Oh great, high and mighty God, we come before you broken and sinful and in need of a Savior today.

We thank you for the blood of your dear son that was spilt on that cross 2, 000 years ago to save a fallen world and we count ourselves as that.

We ask for that blood to wash away our sin.

Not that we deserve it Lord, we don't, but we desperately need it.

We pray for his righteousness to cover us because we have none to offer you.

And Lord, we humbly request your presence in this room.

That the Prince of Darkness and his attempts to distract us, Lord, will be defeated.

We pray, Lord, that you will shut us in that secret place of the Most High just now, that we will abide under the shadow of the Almighty, and that you will be our teacher.

I pray, Lord, you promised you would send him if we asked and we do so now.

And Lord, you know the instrument you have to work through now, and I pray that you will bring to his remembrance the things you've taught him as you promised in John 14, 26, that you will touch his lips with that coal from off the altar, dear God, that your words will be found in his mouth.

We thank you for this and above all, Lord, may your name be glorified and souls saved in the kingdom we ask in Jesus' name, amen.

Once again, I want to welcome each 1 to our second presentation.

And in our first presentation we discovered that the earthly sanctuary was actually a model of the sanctuary in heaven.

To help us understand what's going on up there.

The sanctuary in heaven is actually the center, the great center of activity in God's plan to save a fallen world.

And God gave us this model so that we can cooperate intelligently with what God is doing in heaven.

And for us to do that, we have to know what's going on.

We discovered in our last study that the sanctuary was given to Israel by God as a mechanism of instruction to teach Israel God's plan of salvation.

Not for them to hoard it to themselves, but to share it with the world.

In the sanctuary we find the science of salvation.

And in our study last week we learned that step number 1 in God's plan of salvation is number 1 we've got to come to Jesus for it.

Now what I'd like for us to do is to turn back the pages of time to an incident that took place at the foot of Mount Sinai.

This incident takes place after God has delivered Israel from Egyptian bondage.

And while they were there, God, through Moses, presents to Israel the 10 Commandments.

Those 10 Commandments is actually the covenant between Israel and their God.

And we know the story, they entered into that covenant relationship, Moses goes back up into Mount Sinai to commune with God and he was gone a little bit too long, in fact 40 days.

And the people, the children of Israel, kind of gave up on him, and they figured he must have died.

And then what they did next resulted in them breaking the covenant.

They changed the worship style and the worship that God had given to them.

Moses is then alerted by God of the apostasy that has just taken place.

Moses goes down and then symbolically of what they've done, he breaks the tablets of the 10 Commandments.

And then he asks an interesting question.

And it was discovered that there was no apostasy from that tribe.

As a result of their loyalty to God and their faithfulness, God blessed them with the new role of being His representatives as the priests in the sanctuary as a result of their faithfulness.

By the way, God still rewards people for being faithful to Him.

Never forget that God is faithful to those who are faithful.

And the role of the priest is actually a play out, an object lesson for the people right down to their clothing.

And Aaron, the sons of the descendants of Aaron who was also tribe of Levi, they were given the task of being priest and high priest in the sanctuary.

And the other relatives of the tribe of Levi were given the role of assistance to the Aaronic priesthood.

So you have the Levitical priesthood, the Aaronic priesthood.

The dress of the priest, in fact, the dress of the priest was white linen and he had a white mitre on his head and he had a sash around his waist.

And he could officiate in the tabernacle.

And if you would, get your Bibles and turn with me to the book of Revelation.

And I wanna give you a sneak preview here.

And while you're turning to the book of Revelation, what's happening here in this story, John is in vision.

Jesus has rose, has risen from the grave.

He has ascended to the heavenly sanctuary.

And as he goes into vision, he suddenly hears a voice behind him.

And take note and see if you can see what's going on here.

Then I, this is John speaking, turned to see the voice that spoke with me, and having turned, I saw what?

7 golden lamps, and in the midst of the 7 lamps stands 1 like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band." Does that dress sound familiar?

By the golden lampstand and that was located in the holy place.

So right here we see John in vision in the great control center in heaven.

He sees Christ our priest who is advocating on our behalf.

That is a sneak preview of where we are going to be heading today and beyond.

Now, so this was the priest, But the 1 in charge, in the days of Moses it was Aaron, we have the garment of the high priest.

So the high priest, he also had the white linen garment as well.

And By the way, that linen garment represented the righteousness of Christ.

You know, our righteousness is filthy rags.

Never forget, the only righteousness that the Father will accept is the righteousness of His Son.

And so, that garb spoke of that righteousness, but he also had what was known as the ephod, and it came in 2 parts, the blue and the apron.

And by the way, those who wear aprons are people that serve.

And Jesus came not to be served, but to serve.

And on the ephod, you had the breastplate.

In the breastplate, there were a number of jewels.

There were 12 jewels, and on each jewel was the name of 1 of the tribes.

It was to remind Israel that God carries us on his heart.

But Not only that, but on the shoulders, there were 2 large onyx stones, and on them were written the names of the tribes of Judah.

And it was a reminder to us, the words of Isaiah the prophet, that the government shall be upon his shoulders.

Now on the breastplate there were 2 unusual stones.

03 The Cleansing Laver

Oh Father in heaven, we are so thankful for your love for us.

We're thankful for the sanctuary message, your kindergarten to help us understand that you did find an answer to the sin problem.

And Lord, as we're going through this, We need the Holy Spirit to give us understanding.

We're so thankful for the blood of Christ that there is power in the blood to wash away the filth of our sin.

We thank you for the Holy Spirit, Lord, that you send to us to give us power to obey.

We thank you, Lord, so much for the love that you demonstrate for us.

But Lord, we need the Holy Spirit because spiritual things are spiritually discerned.

And Lord, we don't want anything to stand between our soul and our Savior.

And so we pray just now that your angels of light will come into this room and will keep the evil 1 from distracting us.

I pray, Lord, that we will recognize your unique voice speaking to each of us and applying this message as the speaker could never do.

And I thank you for that, Lord, but glorify your name and your mind be given to us now and we thank you as we ask this in Jesus name amen.

We are learning in our presentations that God gave to Israel the sanctuary to help them understand the plan of salvation.

That plan, they were to understand not only for their own edification so that they can intelligently cooperate with God, But Israel actually was supposed to share that with the Gentile nations around them as well.

And so the God is interested in saving a world.

And we have learned in our study that there was only 1 entrance and it was on the east end.

And we learned that curtain represented Christ.

Jesus says, I am the way, the truth, and the life.

Jesus said, come unto me all ye that are burdened, heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

There's only 1 way to the Father, and that is through Jesus.

Last week, as we came to the brazen altar, we learned that that represented the cross.

It was there that the sacrifice was given for the sinner and Jesus is the Lamb of God that takes away the sins.

Now our next step is going to be the brazen, excuse me, yes, labor.

Labor is our third stop in the sanctuaries.

The Lord reveals to us the plan of salvation.

It was made out of bronze and it stood between the tabernacle and the brazen altar.

When there was the offering that was taken of Israel for the various implements and furnishings of the sanctuary, the ladies gave their polished brass mirrors as a an offering, a love offering if you will.

And it was used to make the labor and that's very significant because brothers and sisters we got to see ourselves for what we really are before we're going to get help.

And so that's very appropriate to see that there.

But let's move forward and let's find out what is the lesson that God wanted us to learn here at the brazen altar.

So let's take a look at question number 1.

You should all have your handouts with you.

Question number 1 says, what service was conducted at the laver, Exodus 30, verse 18 and 19 tells us, you shall also make a laver of bronze with its base, also bronze for what?

For washing, Thank you for reading along with me there.

For Aaron and his son shall wash their hands and their feet in water from it.

And so what we're finding is that the laver was filled with water.

And the priests were to wash their hands and feet.

We're going to see a little bit more on the next verse how and when.

But they were to wash it here at the foot of the laver.

They were to get the water from up here but wash down at the foot of the labor.

But when would they do that and why would they do that?

What was the significance of the washing?

Exodus 30 20 and 21 says, when they go into the tabernacle of meeting or when they come near the altar to minister, to burn an offering made by fire to the Lord, they shall wash with water lest they die.

They shall wash their hands and their feet, lest they die.

So, here we're finding that before they ministered inside the tabernacle or before they brought an offering, the priest was to wash their hands and their feet.

And that symbolic act symbolized the washing away of all defilement of sin as they entered into the work and into the presence of God.

Now remember, you know it mentioned in there that if they didn't do that, that they would die.

And I remember I would read stuff like that and be like, that's kind of heavy.
