Jesus in the ER

The title of my sermon for this morning is Jesus in the ER.

And in the emergency room, the doctors there aren't terribly concerned with the mole on the back of your hand or the fact that you have a cold.

Is your heart working to get the blood around your body?

And this morning we're going to go back to basics.

I was down at Riverside and my pager went off.

I looked at the pager and it said, self-inflicted gunshot wound.

20, I think It was about a 26-year-old male, ETA 2 minutes.

I arrived there a few seconds before the patient did.

The paramedics brought the patient in, got him transferred to the bed.

The ER resident was trying to intubate the patient.

The surgery resident that I was working with was trying to put a central line, this femoral vein.

There were nurses all over the place doing all sorts of things, hooking up another IV, drawing blood, hooking up a pulse ox, putting on EKG leads.

This patient had shot himself in the head.

And I'm looking at the patient's face, and as I'm doing chest compressions on a patient which basically has been dead for quite some time now, the thought flitted across my mind, what would Jesus do if he were right here?

What would Jesus do if he were in my place?

What would it be like if Jesus were the emergency room physician on call?

I've had a little bit of experience in the emergency room, which wasn't a good thing.

Our freshman year of medical school, Rachel was running backwards up a hill and she fell over and knocked herself out and broke...

I didn't find it funny, Rachel didn't find it funny, why do you find it funny?

She either sprained or broke some bone in her hand and so being freshman medical students we didn't know any better, we went to the emergency room.

Now, who's the first person that meets you in the emergency room?

So the triage nurse meets Rachel and I and asks her all sorts of questions about whether she's pregnant, is there any chance she could be pregnant, what other medical problems does she have.

She didn't bother to ask Rachel if she'd been knocked out.

She did get that she'd fallen over and that her hand was hurting now.

And we sat in the waiting room for 2 hours.

So I'm thinking here, my wife's fallen over, she knocked her head, she was knocked out, And I summoned up a little bit of medical knowledge and I said, hey, I wonder if I told the triage nurse that she was knocked out, that we might get back faster.

And so I went and said, you know, I'm not a doctor, but my wife was rendered unconscious by this closed head injury.

Do you think that it would be a good idea to take her back there and do whatever you need to do to her head and her hand and whatever else?" And, oh, I didn't know that, and sure enough, Rachel got back there.

But if you go to the emergency room, You're first met by the triage nurse who decides how bad off you are.

And depending on how bad off you are, you may wait 246, even 8 hours while all the people who are worse off than you are seen.

What would happen if Jesus were the emergency room physician?

As I thought about it, the 1 thing I came to know for sure is that triage would be different.

We see so many examples in the Bible of people coming to Jesus and the triage process is very different.

You know, this is different than what you and I are used to thinking about.

So the thought I'd like you to think about this morning is, What is a real emergency?

Before we read our Bible text for this morning, let's bow our heads to pray.

Dear God in heaven, I ask that the Holy Spirit will be here in a special way today, that you will speak to each 1 of us, and may each 1 of us gain something new from the Bible, something basic that will be of benefit to us the rest of this week.

If you open your Bibles to Luke the gospel physician, Dr.

We're going to read the entire story first of all from Luke chapter 8 verses 40 through 48 and then we'll also look at the story through the gospel of Mark Luke chapter 8 verse 40 through 48 when you're there say amen okay It came to pass that when Jesus was returned the people gladly received him for they were all waiting for him.

And behold there came a man named Jairus and he was a ruler of the synagogue and he fell down at Jesus feet and besought him that he would come into his house, for he had 1 only daughter, about 12 years of age, and she lay a dying.

But as he went, the people thronged him, and a woman, having an issue of blood 12 years which had spent all her living upon physicians neither could be healed of any came behind him and touched the border of his garment and immediately her issue of blood stanched or stopped.

When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude thronged thee and pressed thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?

And Jesus said, Somebody has touched me, for I perceive that virtue has gone out of me.

And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling and falling down before him.

She declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him and how she was healed immediately.

And he said unto her, daughter, be of good comfort.

Thy faith hath made thee whole go in peace now was gyrus daughter a an emergency yes or no be careful I answer yes and no sort of It was it would be an emergency if it was me Was it an emergency for Jesus?

Immediately speak the word and heal her No, did Jesus?

Magically transform him not transport himself from where he was to the home and heal her in person there.

If it was an emergency, I think that he would've done that.

But Jesus didn't hurry, he took his time.

It reminded me of another story found in Mark 9, verse 17 through 27.

We won't take our time to go over that, but there Jesus came down from the Mount of Transfiguration.

He found the disciples scratching their heads, and a father and a son who was demon-possessed.

And in huge contrast to all the other times Jesus came in contact with demon possession, Jesus sort of sat around for a while and conducted an extensive history in physical.

I see, You know, how long has your son been like this?

Jesus took his time because this was not a real emergency.

As Jesus questioned the father, it became clear that there was a real emergency and it was not the son, it was the father.

Jesus in his questioning with the father found out that there was a real emergency here and it wasn't the son.

He took his time to find out what the real emergency was.

In contrast to that, look at Jairus here.

The first important issue we need to look at is gyrus faith.

He comes to Jesus and asks him to heal him.

But in a similar story in Luke chapter 7, 1 through 10, Jesus found some faith that he could really commend.
