The Sanctuary: A Model for Prayer

It is a privilege to be here with you on this Sabbath day this weekend.

You have my bio and some of the documents that have been printed.

I will say that my wife was supposed to be with me but wasn't able to make it.

I believe she's watching there on the internet.

And so warm greetings to my precious wife.

I do want to share with you that I was not supposed to be here.

I had plans to be elsewhere, But the Lord made it very clear to me that He wanted me here this weekend.

And I know that He has a blessing in store for all of us.

I want to share that my interest in the sanctuary began when I was 9 years old.

My family, well my mother, my father was an atheist.

My mother was a devout Catholic and I ended up in an Adventist VBS when I was 9 and it was on the sanctuary.

And as a boy, the sanctuary left a deep impression upon me.

Later when I was baptized at age 12 into the Adventist church, I thought that once you were baptized that 1 never sins again.

Am I the only 1 that's willing to admit that?

But anyway, And then of course I saw that I did sin and I got very discouraged and I thought to myself that maybe God was busy the day I was baptized and I missed the blessing.

And I ended up going back into the world.

And I won't go into the details, that's another story.

It was in the process of taking my life when God broke into my world and let me know that he did value me.

And so I made a decision to go to the Lord, to follow him.

And this was in my 20s, and I started going to church, and I heard conversations in the church, and it went like this.

And others that said it was not, and it was not relevant to us.

Now can both of those statements be true?

And I discovered that the sanctuary is absolutely critical.

Our understanding of it is extremely vital to us.

What I learned is that if you were to take every reference, every imagery, every verse related to the sanctuary from the Bible, your Bible would literally fall apart in your hands.

If you want to understand what the New Testament writer's trying to say, you have got to know the sanctuary.

Because the New Testament writer assumes that you know it.

And so he uses a lot of imagery, especially when you get into prophecy, into the book of Revelation.

In there, what we find is the plan of salvation.

The plan of salvation is clearly revealed in the sanctuary.

I refer to the sanctuary as the great lie detector.

There are a number of different versions of righteousness by faith that are being taught out there.

And if you run it through the sanctuary, you'll find out if you got the true 1 or not.

And it's the only thing that makes us as Seventh-day Adventists unique.

It's not vegetarianism, it's not the Sabbath.

All of our teachings, every teaching of the Word is found there.

But the reason it interested me wasn't because I had some interest in the ancient Hebrew style of worship.

And I read in the Bible that God promised it and I wanted it.

And I struggled like crazy to understand it.

All kinds of people teaching all kinds of stuff on victory today.

I wanted what God was offering me in the Word.

And that's what I'll be sharing with you this weekend.

What we'll be doing in looking at the sanctuary, I'm going to take a very practical look at the sanctuary.

In other words, how to apply it to your life.

I'm not going to be going into blue means this and gold means that, as important as that may be, but rather how to apply what the sanctuary teaches into our lives.

I want to share with you some quotes from the Spirit of Prophecy in regards to the sanctuary.

I think I'm pushing the right button, But the screen hasn't moved.

There it is, but I don't know that it happened because I pushed the button.

But anyway, let's take a look at this quote found in Great Controversy 488.

The very center of Christ's work in man's behalf.

Okay, this is really a significant statement.

By the way, before we go any further, I want to say something about the writings of Ellen White.

You really have to hang on the words that Sister White chooses.

Ellen White classified exaggeration as lying.

Sister White had a tremendous burden upon herself.

God had raised her up and then was communicating through her to the church, and so she had to select the right words to communicate the message God was trying to relate.

You see, you and I live in a society where We exaggerate all the time.

And so what happens, my friends, is we have the tendency of reading this bad habit that we have into her writings.

And We miss what she's trying, the impact, the full power of what she's trying to communicate.

We're not getting half of what she's trying to tell us.

You know, she had a third grade education and that's why she had this entourage around her at all times to help her select the right words.

So that she didn't have a word processor.

So she had a bunch of people that were her word processor.

And so right here she is saying that the sanctuary is the very center.

It is the control center in the activities that are taking place right now to save you and me.

The Daily Today

We have heard quite a bit of speaking already.

You know, you don't have to move, but it would be easier for me if you all pressed together.

We do have spiritual counsel on that, by the way.

1 of the things that helps me, I don't know if it's because I'm Cuban, but I'm relational.

And it helps me when I see facial expressions and I can hear sounds.

But being up so high and so far away, I almost feel like I'm preaching to myself.

But I can tell when the Holy Spirit's moving amongst you or when I'm missing when I can see you.

And, you know, I'm not going to give you a stack of books, but I wanted to recommend some books to you on the sanctuary that I thought would be the best.

And you are, and so I'm going to recommend 3 books to you.

It was gonna be an article until I came here, and then it's a book.

I didn't realize it was put into a book, and Yafet introduced it to me.

If you're going to study the sanctuary, this is going to be absolutely foundational for you.

You can get it off the Internet if you wanted to.

And what this is, is the article that was written by O.R.L.

And I don't know if you're aware of this, but God communicated, yes?

The book, that I may dwell among them is the name of the book.

And Yafet is, I guess you can get the book back there tonight.

Anyway, but you really want to talk to him and get this.

Sister White communicated to us that God endorsed it.

What amazes me is it's taken this long to put it into a book.

And When you look at this and you think about historically the challenges that we have had, false teachings that have come up by very popular speakers that created difficulty within denomination over the subject, you're going to find that at the very beginning God gave us all the answers.

The next 1 I want to recommend to you is Christ in a Sanctuary by Sister White.

It's a compilation of her writings and what she has to say on this, you're getting straight on inspiration.

And again, she addresses a lot of errors that were being perpetrated in her day in regards to the sanctuary and it will help you to avoid pitfalls.

It will set a wonderful foundation for you.

The third 1 I want to recommend to you, and I've read a number, and each 1 has its place, strengths and weaknesses.

I'm giving you the 3 that I find to be strengths.

His spiritual understanding of this is going to broaden your understanding of what the sanctuary was intended to be in communicating to us spiritual truths.

3 powerful books that I want to encourage you to purchase.

Just a couple things I want to add from my last message that I failed to either clarify or to bring out.

And that is, at the table of showbread, the priest's work, remember putting the bread there, is to communicate to Israel that God is our provider for spiritual and physical nutrition.

The physical, of course, the manna and the crops every year, but the spiritual was the Word.

Jesus is the Word of God and the Scriptures is known as the what?

And so God is, we need him to feed us on both.

The other is I failed to mention that the role of the golden altar is the role of mediation.

The earthly priest, through the incense, was a symbol of him presenting the prayers of the people before God.

Jesus does that work in heaven, and you and I have the privilege of interceding for other people.

Tomorrow's presentations are going to be, the first 1 is going to be on the judgment, the good news of the judgment.

I really want to encourage you do not miss either of those.

The first 1 on the judgment is very likely a sermon.

It will be the first time you have ever heard it and very likely the last time you ever will.

In that message, we're going to combine our understanding of the gospel and combine it with the operation of the judgment, what the Bible reveals to us of the judgment.

And once we do that, The mechanism, the operation of it is going to make sense to us.

We're also going to address a fear factor.

And then the message right behind that, because it's going to be back to back, we're going to take a look at how the sanctuary explains the reason for the delay in the second coming.

I want to, before I get started, I want to warn our, I think it's the media people, that there will be an illustration in which I will request the lights in this room to be turned out completely.

And I'm praying for you, and I hope that you continue praying for me.

But I'm gonna kneel, You have already knelt before the Master.

I will, but if you'll bow your heads with me.

Father in Heaven, Lord God, thank you again for the love that just refused to let us go.

We thank you for the beautiful truths that are revealed to us in your Word here in the sanctuary.

And certainly Lord, we are undeserving of all you have done and are doing and are about to do for us.

Father, I thank you for the privilege of being here And you know that I am a broken instrument that has nothing at all to give except that which you give through me, in me.

And so I pray, Lord, for you, the Holy Spirit.

I pray that you will fulfill John 14, 26 and bring to my remembrance the things you've taught me, that I may share it here.

I pray that each heart will be in tune with yours and will recognize the unique message you have for each 1 here which I would be incapable of giving.

I thank you so much for this, Father, so very much.

Please put an angel by my side and guide me, I ask in Jesus' name, Amen.

We learned in my last presentation that the sanctuary is actually a model for prayer and that it helps me to maintain my focus, but also it reminds me of what I should be praying for.

Tonight, we're going to be looking at the daily experience in the sanctuary, the daily today, and how it applies to us today.

And we learned that in the daily, it began with the activities at the brazen altar, then at the labor of water, then at the menorah, then at the table of showbread and the golden altar.

And these activities constituted the daily.

We are learning that the sanctuary reveals to us what Christ has done for us in the past, what Christ is doing for us right now, and what Christ is about to do for us.

We have learned and we're learning that God gave the sanctuary to Israel as a mechanism of instruction to teach Israel the plan of salvation, that God found an answer to the sin problem.

And in studying the sanctuary, we are studying the science of salvation.

In the daily services, we're actually going to learn how to walk with Jesus, and through that walk, get victory over sin.

In the message that the angel gave to Joseph in the New Testament, Matthew 121, the angel revealed to us the mission of Christ.

The Good News of the Judgment

I haven't had much of an opportunity yet to see the campus.

I hope to do a little bit of that before we head on out.

I want to thank you all again for the opportunity to be here and to share some of these things with you.

I understand having taught on a college campus how busy things can be.

And when something's added, it's just added.

So I know that the spirit is willing, but the flesh needs sleep.

And I'm also glad that these things are recorded so you have an opportunity to look back on that.

We're going to continue here and we're going to talk about, We're going to take a look at the judgment.

And you know, as Adventists, we believe in the judgment.

And really, we know that it began on October 22, 1844, but beyond that we don't know about exactly the operation.

And so I hope that you will have a much better picture of that after this morning.

I'd like to begin with a word of prayer and then we'll dive into this.

Father in heaven, we kneel before you because you're our King.

We need you to teach us, to help us, and we are dependent upon you for everything.

Lord, I think of the dear students and staff that are very tired this morning.

Pray for special blessing upon them and For those who are on their way, I pray you'll keep them from the slippery conditions, but Lord, I pray for a special blessing for this group here.

Pray for a mighty outpouring of your spirit.

Thank you for the blood of Jesus that washes away our sin.

And Lord, we invite your presence, not because we deserve it, we don't, but because we desperately need it and we request your presence.

We know that spiritual things are spiritually discerned, and so Lord, our eyes are to you.

We pray also, Father, you'll be with the speaker, that he will not in any way stand between you and the audience.

And may it be Jesus that is seen, heard, and felt.

And Lord, I pray that you will bring to my mind Whatever it is that you would have me to present, and if there's any illustrations that are needed, I pray you'll provide them.

Thank you, and we ask this in Jesus' name, amen.

We are learning that the plan of salvation is revealed in the sanctuary and that the goal of the sanctuary, the plan of salvation, is to recreate in us the character of the Lord Jesus Christ.

And so the sanctuary reveals a daily experience with Christ wherein God works through that process to conduct this change in us.

You know, the thing is you really don't know my past.

But, and maybe I, somewhere in here I should have worked in a testimony.

But God pulled me out of the gutter of LA, and I wrestled with this message because I know God promised it, and I didn't know how to get it.

And I'm learning more and more, it's only found in the presence of Christ.

Both the desire and the power for change.

It's in that daily experience with Him and that's why I stress so hard the importance of that devotional life.

It's as optional for a Christian wanting to go to heaven as it is, as breathing is for somebody who wants to be alive.

Our devotional life, our time with Jesus is absolutely vital.

And really what we have been talking about here is the 3 Angels message, the series, this weekend.

It's the message that the world needs to hear about a God who has an answer to the sin problem.

Not only will he forgive us our past, he'll give us the power to live for him today.

And as we all share this message, the Bible refers to that as the loud cry that's going to take place at the end, The Invitation to the World.

I'm going to begin, we're going to do quite a bit of reading on this 1.

So let's take a look at our introduction.

In the study we will learn the truth about the judgment.

The truth about a final judgment is deeply rooted in the Bible.

Psalmist, prophets, and apostles all bear consistent testimony to it.

Jesus also made many pointed references to the judgment.

It marks the climax of some of his greatest parables.

It is the focal point of much of his teaching.

The Bible writers had a unique perspective on the judgment.

They did not treat it as bad news, but as good news.

They did not view it as something outside of the redemptive process, but part of that process.

They saw the judgment as proof that God is a moral God, that the universe has a moral base.

They saw it as proof that history is not an aimless, undirected process.

So the Bible writers, history was going somewhere.

Therefore they welcomed the judgment with eagerness and hope because it promised the ultimate exposure and condemnation of evil and the ultimate vindication and triumph of righteousness and truth." Can you say amen to that?

Can we be certain there will be a judgment?

And we know that that's a prophecy that we find there in Daniel, Daniel 8.14, 2300 day prophecy and that that judgment began on October 22, 1844.

So as you and I are meeting here this morning, the judgment is underway in heaven.

Number 2, how does Daniel describe the judgment scene when Jesus moves from the holy place to the most holy?

Okay, so this event that took place on October 22, 1844.

Watch the transition here, it's really interesting.

So I'm looking at Daniel 7, 9, 10, 13, and 14.

His garment was white as snow, his hair was, of his head was like pure wool and the throne on his fiery flame.
