Short Patient Contacts with Lasting Impacts - Part 1

I just flew over from Guam yesterday, so I guess my time is a little bit still squeegee.

This morning, what I want to do is first let you know about the Guam Clinic.

And if we have any OBGYNs here in our midst, we can use 2 of you right now in Guam.

So if you just got convicted, come and see me.

Guam Clinic, by the way, is we have an excellent administrator, Coke Lin.

Coke had been an administrator for the Kaiser Permanente facility in Riverside for 30 years.

And when he retired, when I heard he was retiring, I immediately flew over and begged him to come over to Guam, so he's with us in Guam.

Doing an excellent job, the clinic is really taking, moving in the right direction, A lot of opportunities there.

We're hoping to build a new clinic pretty soon.

Add to that, so we're hoping to put a assisted living in there.

We're hoping that we can have a skilled nursing unit, as well as the regular clinic, and the eye clinic, and the dental clinic.

And so we're looking forward to seeing how the Lord leads in that.

We do have the funds to build a church right now and a health education center attached to it.

So we're moving ahead this coming year in doing that.

And we believe that there are great things yet to come in Guam, Micronesia.

For those of you who know about Mission College and thought that it had its last heart attack, in reality it's still well and alive.

The difference is that presently we are having the students Get the training in Guam because we're holding an evangelistic meeting coming next week We have Jeff Youlden from Australia who will be doing the evangelistic meeting We have 25 students there right now that we're training.

We have a lot of Bible Bible studies going on and Right at the University.

We have a campus ministry that going on as well.

And it's just exciting to see what God is doing.

We have a lot of, the academy really has grown and doing well.

And so all in all, things are going well in Micronesia for those of you who have been there before.

I know that perhaps it's good news for you.

And so keep praying for us as we continue to develop there.

Before we begin, I'd like to have you pray with me as we consider the subject.

Now, Father, as we study together, we pray that you will guide us and that you'll lead us as we consider these matters.

Now, first of all, I'd like to make a disclaimer, if that's permissible.

He is a neuroscientist in the teaching at the university in Switzerland in Lausanne, and a lot of the material that I have, I've been communicating with him just to make sure that I have all my T's crossed and all my I's dotted.

I wanted to do this because It's important for us to know how it is that people make decisions.

You know, all the time we're wondering whether or not we should be in a place of helping people make decisions.

And many times we wonder if we know how to do it or what do you do.

And I have to say that most of the time health care professionals are quite leery in getting into the spiritual side of things simply because of ramifications, legalities, et cetera.

But there's a lot of science to it, and as we study together, perhaps we can look at what science says concerning the decision-making process.

First of all, in the magazine Science, am I standing in your way?

In the magazine Science, Decision Making, There's an article there in reference to this particular subject, and it was quite interesting to me as I looked through it and studied it, because it's recently, there's a lot of research going on in terms of decision making.

Of course, you know that most industries that sell invest a lot in trying to figure out how to lead people to a decision.

Madison Avenue spends millions of dollars.

I have a friend, for example, who makes megabucks making an advertisement for companies who want to sell junk.

He says, they'll give him something that mouse wouldn't buy, but it's his job to figure out how to get the mouse to buy it.

And so he will put an ad together, and pretty soon not only mice are buying it, but people are buying it.

And so there�s a lot of research going on, both from the financial perspective as well as from organizations that are trying to figure out what happens with decisions.

Decision-making involves the coordinated interaction of many brain areas, even for a simple game of we would call it checkers here, a chance.

The article starts with, who has an agonized over a major decision in life, whether to accept a job offer, move house, or perhaps switch research fields.

We're confronted with a multitude of decisions on a daily basis.

Many decisions are trivial and can be dealt with in seconds.

However, others may have wider ramifications and can be excruciatingly complicated.

In the past few years, our understanding of the underlying processes of decision-making has progressed markedly.

In this particular article, the research continues to explain that recent experimental studies that provide new insights into the function and connectivity of anterior prefrontal cortex, which forms the apex of the executive system, underline the decision-making.

What he states is that human beings are highly social animals, and many of our decisions make sense only within a social environment.

It is among the strongest evidence to date for systemic organization of the frontal cortex.

The frontal cortex of the brain has been long known to affect internal control of behavior.

It controls the capacity to plan, to reason, to conduct higher level thinking, and connect what we know out the world and how we behave in it.

Recent imagery in a study made to determine when people have brain damage, what happens to them and how it impacts your ability to make decisions.

They just did basic tests of just pressing with 1 finger and then having to press with the index finger and then more complex pressing showed that the blue, for example, you have the red and the blue, which required an index finger push, blue would trigger the middle finger.

The text would then become more difficult by adding alternate finger pressing.

And what they discovered is simply this, that people who have brain damage have more difficulty in making decisions, because we know that just simply by observation.

Many times we can see that by observation, but it was interesting to know that they actually have done research where they can track what part of the brain actually interacts or is activated when it comes to making some decisions, whether it be a simple decision or a complex 1 and what it takes to make that decision.

The findings detailed in March 1 in the journal Nature Neuroscience represents a huge leap in comprehending how the brain supports high-level cognition and intelligent behavior.

It could lead to advances in everything from treatment of strokes to understanding how humans develop thought.

It is among the strongest evidence today for systemic organization of the frontal cortex, " Brayder said.

As we continue, it says, the frontal cortex of the brain has been long known to affect the internal control of behavior.

It controls the capacity to plan, to reason, to conduct higher level thinking and connect what we know about the world and how it behaves.

Natalie was speaking the other night, how many of you were present at that presentation?

The study that he was referring to, to begin with, I had been looking at when I was contemplating and making this presentation.

I'm glad I didn't include it because it would have been redundant.

But it's interesting that a lot of things that are being said by science today are actually found in the spirit of prophecy as you just saw with the doctor presenting the presentation this morning.

Cognitive control involves choosing from among a set of actions or representations in order to achieve a certain goal or outcome.

We use cognitive control to carry out a variety of tasks.

For example, making a cup of coffee and remembering where the house keys are.

The frontal lobes broadly support cognitive control.

Regions within the frontal lobe guide action selection so that we add coffee grounds before we turn on the coffee maker.

Or, in the regions within the frontal lobe, also guide the memory retrieval so that we can still search for our keys, even though we may have limited cues as to where the key may be.

How many of you have lost a key and have no clue where you lost it or where you left it?

You know what helps me, it's just simply to pray.

How many of you have prayed and you found the thing?

Just amazing how the Lord leads you to it.

And it's very, very awe-striking for me to know that God is interested even in the decision to, number 1, look for the thing you lost, and number 2, how he can pinpoint where it is.

Lately, I think I'm losing more things than I used to.

Useful Complementary Remedies - Part 1

I'm very glad to see a room packed full of people.

It shows a lot of interest in complementary and alternative medicine as it's called out in the world.

But I would like to make a disclaimer for complementary and alternative medicine as it's called.

The original complementary and alternative medicine was invented by God, and the world has turned it around and called it CAM.

When in reality, God's plan calls for many of the things we're going to be talking about, and the world has substituted it with other things.

And we need the Lord's help this morning, so can we pray just for a moment, please?

Father in Heaven, thank you for such a wonderful group here at Amen, and we pray that you'll bless as we speak today, that just the right words will be said that will reflect your glory.

This will be fairly fast-paced because there's a lot of ground to cover and we hope that you enjoy it.

There will be tapes available from, or DVDs available from AudioVerse.

If you want the slides, I can give them to you without the pictures.

If you will sign up your name over there, there's a sign up sheet for email and addresses and cell phones and so on.

And we can send them to you without the pictures because, as you realize, many of the pictures are copyrighted.

She's a wonderful researcher, and we did a lot of it together, but she did a lot of it to help me.

And I want to point out some useful complementary and alternative medicine websites.

This is a list of websites for anybody that wants to copy it that I just discovered recently.

It's a treasure trove of information from manufacturers around the world.

And these manufacturing websites are Talking or giving articles about what they've researched into that is the best for this or this or this and on here on these Websites are many many many Useful things to help in natural remedies and an example is at the bottom Let's talk about turmeric or curcumin And there's the website for curcumin for 1 reference alone under the Nutri-Ingredients site.

And if you'll copy that 1 website, that will give you the list of all these other websites at the bottom.

And then you'll have links and more links and more links to follow if you're really interested in getting a lot of useful information about what's going on in the manufacturing world today that really gives us just all kinds of exciting ideas.

And for instance, just the other day, I pulled all these articles just on turmeric alone and showing that slows melanoma growth in lab studies and deadly turmeric supplements recalled.

Because some of them had contaminants in them, not because of the turmeric.

And they've approved it as a generally recognized as safe herb.

It may help breast cancer and all kinds of wonderful things.

The number of visits to providers of complementary and alternative medicine in the USA alone exceeds those to primary care physicians for annual out-of-pocket costs of $30 billion.

And a few years ago, there were hardly any of these things talked about.

Even in medical journals, you just didn't hear about it.

And yet, just the other day, in the latest archives of internal medicine, comes an article about red yeast rice.

We're hearing more and more about red yeast rice, about other herbs, other useful complementary remedies in well-recognized medical journals.

And this was actually quite interesting in that it was pointing out that red yeast rice has several components, and it's also found to be sometimes not as, in the red yeast rice products that they make as a substitute for lavastatin, because it is lavastatin, that some of these are unstandardized, and there's varying amounts of the lovastatin and other monocolons, the active ingredient of red yeast rice, in the different companies that produce this.

So standardization is still a problem in the herbal world.

And 80% of the world's population relies on natural medicines according to World Health Organization estimates.

Wherever you go as missionaries in the world, you're going to run into many, many people that actually depend on local herbs, local products to help them get through illness.

And so it behooves us to look into what is used here in this country in our practice and know more about it.

Health food store clerks may know more about what is being used by patients, by clients, than we do if we don't take a good history.

And they were interviewed and many people could get more information out of the health food clerks than they could out of their doctors.

And more than 75% of pregnant women using herbal remedies during pregnancy didn't tell their doctors or their midwives that they were taking these herbs.

25% of patients in internal medicine wards consume some kind of herbal or dietary supplements.

And in 1 study, the medical team was aware of the consumption in only 23% of the cases.

So if a patient is on a number of drugs, and 1 they found particularly interesting was chamomile tea with cyclosporine, which is a type of chemotherapy.

And chamomile tea is commonly used all through Latin America and America, particularly in the Hispanic world.

So it's very important to get an herbal history.

I want to tell you just briefly about my experience.

I was working in an urgent care center in Chattanooga, moonlighting a little bit, and a lady came in, a young lady, with a rash all over her body.

She'd had fever and malaise for several days and had just broken out in this terrible rash that looked like measles, and she really was upset because she didn't know what was going on.

I thought I gave her good home instructions to go see her doctor the next day.

She'd seen 8 years later, I got a subpoena from 2 different lawyers, and this lady had seen over a hundred doctors in the interim and she turned out to be the first case of eosinophilia myalgia syndrome found from L-tryptophan on the East Coast.

And it turned out that there were 60, 000 people that got sick and 37 died.

And it's a disease complex that ends up being something like scleroderma, where there's some hardening of different organs and they have chronic illness.

Sometimes for many years it never goes away in many cases.

Sometimes steroids help, sometimes it doesn't.

Of course, in that case, it wouldn't have helped because I wouldn't have known what to do anyway.

But it's just a lesson for us that if this lady had perhaps told me that she was on this L-tryptophan, we might have investigated.

We might not have at that time because not much was known about it.

Anyway, the company in Japan, the Showa Denka Company that made the L-tryptophan was subsequently found to have contaminated L-tryptophan with other contaminants, and that's what was causing the illness.

And finally, in 1991, after she had been damaged and ill for several years and became permanently ill, the FDA approved, or actually banned tryptophan for some years, and several years later it was reinstated once they were sure that there were no contaminants in it.

So we do have to be careful what we accept in the complementary and alternative medicine world.

For Isaiah had said, let them take a lump of figs and lay it for a plaster upon the boil and he shall recover.

There are many forgotten prescriptions and we're going to go through several slides quickly on some of the simple prescriptions that God has given us through the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy.

And actually, the National Institutes of Health did a study with pharmaceutical organizations.

They studied the case history of Hezekiah and said, let's look at figs.

And they came up with some interesting conclusions that there are many medicinal qualities to figs.

And they actually thought that maybe Hezekiah had anthrax.

This was done and Hezekiah was restored to health.

White says, to treasure this prescription which the Lord ordered to be used more than we do.

A cup of catnip tea will quiet the nerves.

And although exciting for cats, for people, it is very calming to the nerves.

And We usually make a tea with 2 or 3 tablespoons of the herb to a quart of boiling water, steep it for 20 minutes, and then say to the patient, drink 3 or 4 cups a day.

Chamomile tea is wonderful for calming the nerves and for calming digestion as well.

So you have to even ask people, do you have any allergies when you give them even simple herbal teas?

Because if you give chamomile tea and they're allergic to daisies, they can have an allergic reaction, maybe hay fever, sneezing, or whatever.

White says, will induce sleep and we often use hop tea at night for our patients with hop capsules And we'll use a combination of catnip, hop, passion flower, and chamomile in the tea.

And if they don't have reflux symptoms, maybe a little touch of peppermint to make it taste good because hops is quite bitter.

But Lupulus is the ingredient in hops that makes it active.

And we don't have time to go into all that, but hops is a very nice sedative.

Restoring Dental Patients to Optimum Health

Since I don't have my projector here, I'll just read it from my PDA.

It says, It's Psalms 103 verses 2 through 5.

It says, Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgiveth all thine iniquities, who healeth all thy diseases, who redeemeth thy life from destruction, who crowneth thee with loving kindness and tender mercies, who satisfieth thy mouth with good things, so that thy youth is renewed like the eagles.

Well, that's a beautiful few verses about God's interest in blessing us in so many ways.

And I believe he wants to heal all our diseases as well don't you that's why we're here at this conference isn't it I want to share just a little bit of my path my professional path since leaving Loma Linda.

I graduated from the School of Dentistry in 1977 with also a degree in public health.

And because we owed too much money, $30, 000 at that time, the General Conference would not send us to the mission field.

So my wife and I decided we would find a mission field in our home conference which is Arkansas, Louisiana.

She was from Louisiana, grew up in New Orleans and we met at Ozark Academy.

And so we looked at the map, it was called a dark county map back then, and found an area that had not been served.

It wasn't actually what we were looking for, but that's another story.

And we moved back to a little town of Amity, at that time population 515, I think it was.

It's been a marvelous experience of starting a scratch practice we actually bought a lot and built an office and I like to build things so I help the builders build the first 6 months after I graduated and opened the office in August of 1977.

And I practiced pretty much traditional dentistry, what I was taught, during the first 8, 9 years of practice.

And however, things once in a while just seem to have some problems.

I would have patients come back to me and say, You know, Doc, since I saw you last, I spent 2 days or 3 days in the hospital.

I was really sick, and I think what you did caused it.

Well, you know, of course, I was very defensive.

No, no, what I did was perfect, you know.

But gradually, other things began to impact me, and I felt that I wanted to be open to the Lord's leading and professionally there was an article published in the May 1984 Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry which I had subscribed to for many years and Have a whole eight-foot shelf of those magazines and American Dental Association journals and And I was really impressed with this this study.

Eggleston and he was comparing mercury fillings with doing T lymphocyte tests.

And he did a T lymphocyte study and found out that the percentage of T lymphocytes with mercury fillings, a young lady, 26 year old, who had about 6 fillings I think, all beautiful fillings, she had a T lymphocyte count of about 48.

And he took the mercury fillings out put in composites and did another mercury T-lymphocyte test 4 months later and found the percentage was 73 and which is about a 30 40 percent increase And then he put little tiny mercury fillings in the middle of those composites and 4 months later did another T lymphocyte test and it was almost exactly the way it was before, 47-48 percent.

And so he took those out, restored the teeth with gold restorations, 4 months later did another T lymphocyte test and it was back up an area of 73, 72, 73 again.

You know, T-lymphocytes, that's a pretty important part of our immune system, isn't it?

You physicians know more about that than I do.

But I wondered, should I be placing something that has the potential of impairing someone's immune system?

And then about this time, I had a patient who was disabled with muscle problems.

And a few years before, I had placed 4 or 5 small occlusal amalgams in about 4 is in his molars And his mother had read something in a magazine somewhere, and she thought his problems might be related to the mercury fillings.

And of course, I was real defensive, you know, standard of care, I don't have to do this.

But I said, as a Christian, since you've asked me to, I will replace those fillings.

Then about this time, there were some little ladies at Weimar that had, I don't know, they had a burden.

Somehow they learned that I was interested in mercury and they sent me a paper with some spirit of prophecy quotes about mercury and I had no idea that there was anything in the spirit of prophecy about Mercury.

But statements like this in Spiritual Gifts, Volume 4, page 140, Every poisonous preparation in the vegetable and mineral kingdoms taken into the system will leave its wretched influence, affecting the liver and lungs and deranging the system generally.
