Jesus chose a group of disciples to work with Him that would probably have been overlooked by many other teachers but He saw something in them that He could work with. Despite lacking experience and education, He saw a willingness and humility that were more important than anything else.

Jesus wasn't a one man band whilst down here on earth, but he invested heavily in a group of young men who came to be known as his disciples. This group of young and seemingly unqualified men will be trained by the greatest teacher for three and a half years, and then following his death, they will go to turn the world upside down. The first disciples that Jesus will call will be right here by the side of Lake Galilee. Shortly after Jesus temptation in the wilderness, he was back in the area teaching people near the lake. He saw two boats just offshore, but the fishermen were not in them. Rather, they were cleaning their nets on the shore. Seeing one of the boats belong to Simon Peter, Jesus asked him if he could get into the boat and preach from the boat. As Jesus finished his preaching discourse, he told Simon Peter to push the boat out to sea and cast his nets into the water. Peter was a fisherman by trade. He had learned it growing up and he knew one was the best time to fish. He said they had fished all night and he knew that nighttime was the best time to fish. The waters of the sea of Galilee are very clear, so nighttime was best, so the fish couldn't see the nets. Nevertheless, he said to Jesus at your word, our cast out the net. He trusted. Jesus had a superior knowledge despite his better experience as they went out into the lake and cast their nets, the Bible says they became so full of fish that they almost were a breaking point, Calling Their companions for help. They reached the shore and Jesus called Simon Peter and his brother Andrew, saying, follow me and I'll make you fishes of men. He then went to James and John, the sons of Zeb who were in their boats mending nets, called them and they left their father and followed Jesus. Each of these men had occupations, responsibilities, and no doubt, people who were dependent on them, but they left all to follow Jesus. The next disciple to be called was Levi Matthew, and he was a tax collector, the most hated profession amongst the Jews, for he worked for the Romans. Tax collectors were a constant reminder to the Jews that they were not independent and they were often extortionist taking more money for their own prophet. Jesus though saw one such man and called them to follow him, and he did. This created huge interest and indignation that a religious leader would use a tax collector as one of his closest confidence. Matthew was different to the first four disciples. He was wealthier and more educated, but he was a societal outcast. None of the men that Jesus called were considered qualified by the schools of the day. Jesus though saw something in each one of them that could be molded and shaped. He saw a teachable spirit, a willingness to learn, a humility, and a recognition of his divinity. Jesus chose people from a wide variety of professions, and today God is calling for you to be his disciple. We don't have to have letters behind our name. We don't have to come from an honored profession. Our job or our family might carry stigma. Yet today if we submit to Jesus, we can be a disciple of his.
