First Impression

I thought, you know, tonight, what would I talk about?

And I thought maybe I would talk about, I'd have a message called first impressions.

Because how many of you have met someone today for the very first time?

And you're making your first impressions.

Now, Kirk Kruger, 1 of the elders here in the church, called me and said there was a special girl that he wanted us to pray for who's turned up missing in Truckee.

So why don't we pray for Kylie and the rest of us and then we'll just dive into our message, and hopefully at the end we'll have some more time for prayer as well.

Father in heaven, Lord, today we're thankful that we can come to your house, we can talk about first impressions.

But right now before we get into that message, we know that our prayers make a difference if we agree concerning anything, and we want to agree concerning this thing, that we could agree concerning Kylie, who has come up missing, that somehow you could act in a way you could not otherwise have acted if we had not thus prayed to find her safe and sound, If she's in harm's way, and if there are those that have sinister motives, bind them and bring comfort to her parents, those searching for her.

And then we just ask that you would be with us here tonight also as we open your word.

I, a number of years ago was, actually 30 years ago, 30 years ago in September, I was on my honeymoon with my wife.

And I decided to take her to England and to Scotland, to the land of my forebears and to visit all the sites.

And we were in London for a few days, and she wanted to leave because I'd gone to the British Museum for 3 days in a row.

And she thought the honeymoon was not going that well.

I thought it was going splendid, but that was not really a great first impression.

And so we got on the train, overnight train, to go to Edinburgh.

And we got off there to visit the capital there.

And as we were in Edinburgh, we were walking along and I was thinking, I wonder if there are any Christians or Seventh-day Adventists here in Edinburgh.

How many of you are like always thinking that no matter where you are?

I'm walking along I said who would I talk to and I see this man, and he's carrying a sign.

And it says, repent and believe the gospel.

All these people walk into all the shops and everything else.

He has this big sign repent Believe the gospel.

I was like, wow That guy I like that guy.

Maybe that, that guy's probably a Christian.

He like didn't talk to me about anything.

He just said, have you repented and believe the gospel?

I don't have time to talk to you anymore then.

There's many people who have not accepted Jesus here.

And I was like, wait a minute, wait, wait, wait.

He goes, he goes, I don't have much time if you have repented and believe the gospel.

So I said to him, I said, do you believe in the seventh day Sabbath?

I don't want to receive the mark of the beast.

And I was like, oh my, I met an Adventist.

I met an Adventist and he goes, we don't have time to talk about this.

If you want to talk anymore, I have another sign.

You take a sign, I'll take a sign, and you get busy.

I had never, this was an amazing first impression.

I got myself a cow, I gotta see if they can plow.

You say honeymoon, I say people are being lost.

I looked at my wife, you know, I'm like, okay, from the British Museum to front line signs of the times.

And he goes, you know, I can see that you don't want to do this right now, but I got to go.

So I walked down a road a little further and I see another guy with a sign.

I mean, scars, fresh wounds on his face, on his arm, and he's carrying this kind of limping with his sign.

And I went up to him and he goes, I said, hi I noticed your sign.

He goes, I can't remember exactly what it said, but it was the same kind of thing, and he goes, have you accepted Jesus?

He goes, I don't have time to talk to you.

I said, do you know another guy that has another sign that says the cane?

I met him, and he got me to carry this sign.

I said, before you go, before you go, I have a question for you.

Why is it that you have all those wounds on your face?

He goes, last week, I was carrying a sign that said that I didn't believe in abortions and I got beat up for carrying the sign.

They beat me up and they left me in an alley right over there.

I was like, whoa, these signs of the times guys, they're serious, they're willing to get beat up.

We're going along and I don't know, How many people meet people like that?

You're just like, I don't want to go shopping.

I don't feel like shopping after meeting people like that.

So then I go to this park, you know, and I'm in the park.

I think it's Sir Walter Scott Monument or something there.

I'm looking up at the castle and it happens again.
