The Intercession of Christ

Title of this message, The Intercession of Jesus.

These are the 2 pillars that the gospel rests on.

And you actually need a balance of both of these to truly understand the gospel.

You know, the old time preachers, they would emphasize the badness of man, but not the goodness of God.

More modern preachers, they emphasize the goodness of God, but not really the badness of man.

And you really need a balance to truly understand and grasp the gospel.

And what breaks people's hearts, friends, what breaks their hearts about the gospel, it's not just that God is good, but that he is so good to you in spite of how bad you've been to him.

It's that God was good to you when you did not deserve it.

You know, a lot of agnostics think that God is probably good, that Jesus was a nice guy, but are they converted?

And the more you understand these 2 principles, how good God is, how bad you are, how bad we are, the deeper your love for God becomes.

And if there's 1 topic that brings out these 2 pillars that the gospel rests on, it's the intercession of Jesus.

And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat.

Peter, Satan wants to have you that he can sift you like wheat.

Well, back in the ancient times when they would, you know, would harvest and bring in a harvest, they would do something.

They would bring all the wheat into this area and they'd put it on a big blanket and they would toss it up in the air, they toss all the wheat up in the air, and someone would stand with some kind of a fanning mechanism and they would fan the wheat as it's going up and down in the basket, up and down in the air, and as they were fanning it, the chaff, which was like the leaves and the, you know, the husks and the things that covered it, would blow away.

The dirt would all blow away and what would remain would be the kernel, the wheat, the good stuff.

And so Jesus said, Peter, Satan has asked to have you that he might sift you.

Satan saw that, you know, there's enough chaff in Peter's religion.

If I can shake him and blow on him, I can blow him right out of the church.

Jesus knows this and he said, Satan is asking to sift you like wheat.

Does God allow us to be shaken sometimes?

But the shaking that God allows us to go through, it's to blow the sin out of our characters.

When Satan asks to sift you, it's to blow you out of the church.

It's to blow you out of a relationship with Jesus.

Satan wanted to blow Peter right out of the church.

King James says desired that word is better translated demanded some modern translations if someone has a modern translation it might say demanded So Satan is demanding to have Peter.

They think they're entitled to something.

They think they have a right to something, right?

Satan somehow felt he had a right to sift Peter.

Why did he feel he had this right to sift Peter?

What did Peter do shortly after this story?

Who remembers when the guards came to take Jesus?

Peter saw, Satan saw that Peter was living a hypocritical life.

And he asked to sift him out of the church.

Let me explain a little bit about spiritual warfare.

There are rules that govern the spiritual world, and there are rules that govern spiritual warfare.

When we sin, well, first of all, back up, there's 2 powers.

When we sin, we align ourself with Satan and darkness.

When we're obedient, we align ourselves with God.

And when we align ourselves with God, there are privileges, there are benefits, and 1 of them is extra protection.

We get extra protection when we align ourselves with God.

When we're aligning ourselves with Satan, we are more vulnerable to Satan's attack.

He has the ability to manipulate our feelings more.

He has the ability to manipulate our circumstances more, to do things to us.

Perhaps you could think of someone who is walking with Satan, and you've seen this happen in their lives.

And so the problem is when we say we're on God's side but we're still living a sinful life.

And Satan accuses and demands us when this is the case especially.

In Revelation 12, he's called the accuser of the brethren that accuses them day and night before God.
