Canvassing - Know Your Canvass

Our Father in heaven, I ask that you'll bless us as we talk about how to sell Christian books.

I thank you and I ask for this gift in the name of Jesus.

What the world knows is that attitude has everything to do with sales.

The world knows it, and the world has a plan for door-to-door salesmanship.

And I'll draw a graph that might illustrate it for you.

The plan is to recruit the man, right about here.

This represents his energy, and not just his energy, but it represents also his sales, because there's a distinct connection between his energy and his sales.

Give him a seminar on thinking for success.

Bring in Zig Ziglar, and that's expensive, but then Zig Ziglar goes away and the man goes like this, but he's getting really discouraged now, But now bring in another motivational speaker.

But they know that there's gonna be diminishing returns and so just let him go and he'll quit.

I don't know if you follow what I'm trying to communicate here, but the business at Door-to-Door Sales is a high burnout business.

You don't meet many people who do it for 10 years in a row.

And you'll meet many people who've done it for some time in their life.

They've done it for a year or 2 or 3 or 4, doing the vacuum cleaner kind of thing.

The normal system of sales knows you need energy and it knows you can get energy from what I'd call hype.

You can't be hyped up for year after year without it wearing on your nervous system.

And do you all follow what I'm trying to communicate so far, this idea?

So Jessica, you've been in canvassing programs.

Have you noticed in canvassing programs how just before they go out they'll have a raw raw thing.

You experienced that, did you experience that?

Because when energy and excitement are up, productivity is up.

The problem is with hype sales is that it cannot be carried on for the long term.

It wears you out and even if you just try to keep it up for 2 or 3 years, you begin to feel what they call burnout, emotional exhaustion.

People begin to think, it's just not for me.

I'm just not cut out for this kind of work.

When really it has very little to do with canvassing.

It has to do with the source of the energy.

I just had a deep philosophical idea and I don't know how well it sunk in, but you'll have to test it in your life and see how it measures out.

Besides hype, there is another source of energy.

Conviction provides a motivation and Conviction provides a motivation and a persuasion that is similar in productivity to hyper energy.

But it doesn't wear out your emotional system.

So for example, if you would watch how this works in my programs, before we go out to work, we all kneel and for 10 to 15 minutes, we pray.

I mean, it's not silent, but 1 person at a time praying.

And then when the last person prays, we get up and we go out to work.

It doesn't produce as much energy and hype as the rah-rah system.

But give it 10 weeks and the students aren't as tired at the end.

Give it 3 years and they're not nearly as tired.

Does that make any sense to you what I'm trying to communicate here?

It has some other benefits besides the business of being weary and tired.

It doesn't match real well with prayer or thoughtfulness.

In other words, hyper mentality works better as a reward of success than as a cause of success.

I'll tell you a little bit more, and then I'll go on.

When I have a team of students who are in their teens, say 15, 16, 17, 18, I'm quite a hyper leader.

That is, I'll pretend you're all in my van and I'm in front of you and we just pulled over and say, all right, Jonathan, you're gonna start there at that house like you work up the left-hand side, call me, cross when you get to the stop sign.

And Jessica, you're going to be across from him.

That's the sound of my voice, kind of like this.

Suppose that now you all grew up 10 years older.

Okay, I know you all have been praying about where to go.

Jonathan, I'd like you to start at that house and work up that hand side and Jessica, you'll be across from him.

It's the same kind of idea, but can you hear the difference in the hype?

The hyperactivity isn't needed where Thoughtful conviction is present.

But where thoughtful conviction is a bit much to expect, hyperactivity works instead.

Now verse 17 is in the middle of a sentence.

The sentence is about Abraham and it's describing him.

You'll see halfway through verse 17, it's speaking about God.

And it says, who quickeneth, what's it say there?

I just distracted myself by the people at the door.

Who quickeneth the dead and calleth those things that are not as though they are.

God quickens the dead, that is he makes the dead alive, and he calls things that are not, he speaks to them as if they really are.

Then the next verse, verse 18, is about Abraham, who it says, who against hope believed in hope.

That means that Abraham believed when it seemed hopeless.

When he couldn't see any reason or rhyme in believing, he believed.

Who against hope believed in hope that he might be the father of many nations according to that which was spoken." Why did Abraham believe when it seemed hopeless?

That is God's word was the reason he had why he could depend on God's word.
