The Sanctuary, God's Answer to the Sin Problem

The Sanctuary: A Model for Prayer

A good evening and a blessed Sabbath to each 1 of you.

And I'm very much appreciative of Lisa's kind introduction.

I wish I could have had my wonderful family here with me.

Unfortunately, I couldn't and my 2 kids actually just got engaged close together.

So by this time next year, they should be married and we should have less money.

It really is an honor for me to be here for a number of reasons, this part of the world is where I grew up, I graduated from La Sierra my, my wife graduated from Loma Linda, the School of occupational therapy.

And it's just nice to come back to this climate.

It's what I grew up in and what I'm used to.

But it's also an honor for me to come back and a privilege because of this message of the sanctuary, which is very important to us as a people, far more than I think many realize.

And it's just amazing that tomorrow actually marks 178 years since the Great Disappointment.

And the, thank you, the Millerite movement was birthed from the sanctuary.

And the Seventh-day Adventist Church was birthed from the sanctuary.

The sanctuary is extremely important to us.

My interest in the sanctuary began when I was 9 years old.

My mother was Catholic, my father was was atheist, but my mother was Catholic, took us to the Catholic church, and a Seventh-day Adventist witnessed to her, And so she became a Protestant.

And I began, the first thing I ended up doing that summer was go to a VBS.

And that VBS, the people that were organizing it, the theme was on the sanctuary.

So the moment I stepped foot into an Adventist church, I am immediately confronted with the sanctuary as a child.

And the person who put the, that organized this BBS, it was a labor of love that the the crafts that we had were top notch.

And 1 thing that really impressed me in my home, even though we didn't open the Bible and read it, because the priest told us we would never understand it.

My mother knew that it was God's holy book and so always had a place of honor in our home.

And, and she knew that in there was God's law and that That law was the foundation of the government of God, which is amazing my mother had knew that much.

But when I was in that VBS, they gave us somebody cut out of wood, you know, the typical shape that we give to the 10 Commandments.

They had Xeroxed the 10 Commandments and put it and glued it onto that block of wood.

And I remember when I held that, I can still remember the chill that ran through my body, that I was actually permitted to hold this document at 9.

So I had this instantaneous connection and impression with the sanctuary.

Well, I got baptized later and I misunderstood things about baptism.

I thought I would never sin again and somehow it didn't work for me.

And I figured that maybe God was busy with more important things that day and I didn't get the blessing.

But anyway, I walked away from the Lord and entered into a life of sin.

And it was through a near suicide that God brought me back.

And I realized that God really was interested in my life.

And when I began to go to church, people were talking about the sanctuary.

And some were saying that the sanctuary was extremely important to us, and others were saying that it really wasn't.

Now, how can both of those things be true?

I decided to study the matter out for myself.

The Bible is actually saturated with sanctuary terminology, imagery.

And, And if we were actually to remove everything in the Bible that has to do with the sanctuary, the Bible would literally fall apart in your hands.

And the New Testament writer, when he writes, he assumes that the reader understands the sanctuary.

And he's using imagery that unless you know the sanctuary, you're only getting about half of what he's trying to communicate.

And it's really funny because I kept trying to understand Paul's writings and I couldn't understand them.

And I, when I went back and studied the sanctuary and then studied Paul's writings, it made sense to me.

The plan of salvation, how God intends to save a lost world, is revealed in the sanctuary.

And God put it there and put it together in such kindergarten imagery so we can understand it.

And the reason why the sanctuaring means something to me isn't because I have an interest in ancient Jewish styles of worship.

It's because I was a sinner in need of a savior.

And I was struggling with sin and I didn't know how to get victory.

And I would hear people say, oh, you're gonna keep sinning and we're gonna be saved at the end.

And I'm reading my Bible and I'm thinking, that's not what the book says.

And as I'm reading the Bible, I'm keep hearing God talk about victory.

And I'm like, Lord, there's no argument between you and me, I want it.

And it wasn't the sanctuary that I found the answer.

And we're gonna be going over that together.

And what we're gonna do is we're gonna take a very practical look at the sanctuary.

You know, I kept hearing, I realized the sanctuary was important And then I would go to these meetings and people would say blue means this and gold means that.

And not that those things aren't important, they have a place, but I needed something practical.

I needed something to help me get victory.

I mean, to me, I kept thinking, that's great if I'm playing Trivial Pursuit, but that's not helping me right now.

And so we're gonna take a look at a very practical look at the sanctuary.

You're gonna have something you can use when we're done with this.

And I just want to say this, when you look at the Reformation, during the dark ages, at the dominance of the Catholic Church, the truths of scripture were lost.

And in the Reformation, you know that those truths began to come back to the table.

You know, the Lutherans and the Presbyterians, the Calvinists, they brought to the table, the Bible, the Bible only, and Jesus, Jesus only, righteous by faith, right?

The Anabaptists brought what to the table of truth?

Well, the Seventh-day Adventist Church brings the sanctuary.

That's the last piece of the puzzle in the Reformation.

And the sanctuary is important because it pulls all of those truths together and they show us how they're related to each other.

And so I'm gonna begin by going through some quotes here in the spirit.

I could show a bunch, but we're going to go through a few of them.

Or maybe we're not going to go through a few.

The sanctuary in heaven is the very center of Christ's work in behalf of men.

It is the control center for the plan of salvation.

So all the work that's being done right now to save you and me, the angels that are being coordinated, all of that is taking place in the sanctuary.

Now if you're the devil, look, if we're in a war, okay, in a war, the idea is to make the other guy lose and you win.

If you're in a war and you discover where the other guy's control center is, what's your job?

You have to destroy their capacity to war against you.

And so the devil can't nuke heaven, but what he's done is he has nuked the message from the minds of the Christian world.

And so we can't coordinate with what's happening up there without that knowledge.

The Daily Today

I think we are, I think we're ready to go.

This morning I wish that the whole Adventist church was my audience.

I wish the whole Christian world was my audience.

We're going to be covering some things that are very important to us, but especially precious to me.

What I'd like to do is I'd like to begin with a review from the presentation last night.

Last night we looked at the sanctuary as a model for prayer and we saw that through the daily activities of the priest at each 1 of the furniture items in the sanctuary, we found that the sanctuary actually prompts us on what we need to be praying for.

And the sanctuary points us to what Jesus has done for us.

It points us to what Jesus is doing for us and to what Jesus is about to do for us.

We learned last night that wherever Jesus is and whatever Jesus is doing is present truth and that our attention needs to be on Jesus at this time.

So in essence the sanctuary we learned was what God gave to Israel to help them understand how God was going to deal with the sin problem.

In the sanctuary we find the science of salvation and there's no way to truly correctly understand what Jesus did for us at the cross unless we see it through the lens of the sanctuary.

We will end up with something weird and dangerous if we don't view the cross through the sanctuary.

So what we're going to do today, this morning, is we're going to take a closer look at the daily experience.

And what we're going to find that in the daily experience, we're going to learn how to walk with Jesus, but also in that walk, how to have victory over the power of sin.

Now, Long ago, when Jesus was about to be brought into our world, an angel was sent to Joseph to communicate to him the message of Jesus.

And in Matthew 1, 21, it's in the paragraph in your handout, the angel said this to Joseph, and the angel said, and she will bring forth a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people, the next word's big, from their sins, not in their sins, but from their sins.

There is a gospel today that's being preached that you'll be saved in your sin.

The angel said, no, he came to save his people from their sin not in their sin So before we go on any further we got to address the same issue What is sin?

So let's so good Adventist answer So let's squeeze that a little tighter.

There's a big fat hairy difference between mistakes and sins.

If you were coming to Advent Hope today and you should have turned left off the street, and instead you turned right, that is a mistake.

Okay, so sin is the transgression of the law.

Does heaven charge it against you as a sin?

What does Paul say God does in our time of ignorance?

Sin is knowing God's will on any given matter and making the choice to go against it.

Now, if you will open your Bible to the book of 2 Peter, 2 Peter chapter 2.

In the verses we're about to read, in the verse we're about to read, God gives to us through Peter some very important data information in regards to what actually took place in heaven, the rebellion there.

For if God did not spare the angels who what?

If God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell or to the pit, actually to earth, right?

And delivered them up into chains of darkness to be reserved for judgment.

Okay, listen gang, if those angels were kicked out for sinning, Do we really believe we're going in doing the same thing?

And so the whole plan of salvation is God wants to destroy, eradicate from the universe, the cancer of sin, but he wants to save the patient.

And so he has to extract the sin from the patient, or in destroying the sin, he's going to destroy this patient with it.

God wants to separate sin from us, but if we refuse to be separated from the sin, we will be associated with it and we're going to be destroyed with it.

So let's take a look then on how God is going to do this.

Is there anyone who does not have a handout?

Raise your hand very high because I'm not going to see it otherwise.

So it looks like everybody has a handout.

And there's not much room for y'all to kneel, is there?

So I'm just gonna ask you to bow your heads with me, kneeling your hearts as I pray.

Father in heaven, we are so thankful for your love for us.

We're so thankful for the awful risk you took to save us.

And Lord Jesus, we pray now that you will be our teacher.

Spiritual things are spiritually discerned.

I pray you'll hide this instrument behind the cross that Jesus will be seen, heard, and felt.

Father, you know every person in this room.

You know where they're at in their walk with you.

And so Father, I just pray that between my lips and the ears of the people here, you will perform a miracle.

And that Lord, you will communicate to each 1 precisely what they need at this hour.

We thank you for this and ask it all in Jesus name.

Okay, so what I'm going to do here, this is going to be a class and it's going to, I'm going to be using a Q&A method.

So let's go into question number 1 and let's begin unpacking this.

What is God's will concerning his people?

First Thessalonians 4 verse 3 and 4 says, for this is the will of God, your what?

The Good News of the Judgment

I want to begin again with a review of what we learned in our last presentation about the daily today.

And because it really is the background to what we're going to be studying at this hour in regards to the judgment.

And we are studying the sanctuary message.

The message is all about sanctification, our change from rebels to friends of God.

And this Sanctification is a journey with God of surrender each day to Him.

And the daily experience reveals that to us.

We talked about spending time with God each day, committing our lives to Him.

And my challenge was just give Him 5 minutes to start with 5.

By the way there's a really good devotional book that I could recommend to you on this subject.

It's not the sanctuary but God's transformative power.

It's written by Ellen White it's called Ye Shall Receive Power.

But what we're studying as we're looking to the sanctuary, my friends, is we're studying the 3 angels message.

And the 3 Angels message, the message of righteousness by faith, if it's lived and shared, will become the loud cry.

The message we're looking at is uniquely Adventist.

God raised up the Advent movement to add the last piece of the puzzle to the Reformation.

And God has led me to do a 25-part series, a full gospel presentation through the sanctuary.

And I really encourage you to listen to that because you're gonna see our message in an entirely new light.

What I'd like to do at this hour, I'd like to begin with a word of prayer.

And I'm gonna kneel as we get into this presentation.

Our Father, again, we wanna thank you for how you have been blessing us through these presentations.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit you're illuminating our minds and We're beginning to see this message in a new light.

We're beginning to see a God who is so wise and gracious and merciful and tenderhearted and patient and so gracious in his dealings with us.

And Father, as we enter into the judgment, there are so many misconceptions of the judgment.

A lot of it has to do with misconceptions of your character.

I pray that that all will be dispelled this morning.

I pray, Father, that through the power of the Holy Spirit you will teach us, you'll communicate with us these amazing truths that we'll understand how to apply them to our own lives.

So once again, Father, we pray that you will hide the speaker behind the cross that he will not intervene, interfere between you and your people this morning.

We pray Lord that it'll be Jesus and him only that will be seen, heard, and felt.

I'm going to begin by reading the introductory paragraph to our presentation, if you will read along silently with me.

In this study, we will learn the truth about the judgment.

The truth of a final judgment is deeply rooted in the Bible.

Psalmists, prophets, and apostles all bear consistent testimony to it.

Jesus also made many pointed references to the judgment.

It marks the climax of some of his greatest parables and is the focal point of much of his teaching.

The Bible writers had a unique perspective on the judgment.

They did not treat it as bad news, but as good news.

They did not view it as something outside of the redemptive process, but as part of that process.

They saw the judgment as proof that God is a moral God, and that the universe has a moral base.

They saw it as proof that history is not an aimless and undirected process.

To the Bible writer, history was going somewhere.

Therefore, they welcomed the judgment with eagerness and hope because it promised the ultimate exposure and condemnation of evil and the ultimate vindication and triumph of righteousness and truth.

I don't know what your picture is of the father.

I've had my struggles with that in my walk with God and learning who he is.

But many people view the judgment as something to fear.

Many fear what decision the father is going to make in my case.

You're not going to worry about what the father's decision is going to be, but there is something to fear and we're going to find out what that is.

So let's begin with question number 1 and let's get into our presentation.

Can we be certain there will be a judgment?

Act 1731 says God has appointed a day in which he will judge the world.

And today is October 22, and it's the anniversary of the great disappointment.

It's also the anniversary of when the judgment began 178 years ago.

And in our 4.30 presentation, we're gonna find out why we're still here and what needs to happen to bring an end to this crisis.

So the judgment began, of course, Daniel 8 14, the 2300 day prophecy points to that date when it began and it landed on October 22 1844.

Number 2, how does Daniel describe the judgment scene when Jesus moves from the holy place to the most holy.

So we're going to read now Daniel 7, 9, 10, 13, and 14 and watch the movement and What was happening?

What is being described here is the activity the movement that took place from the holy place to the most holy on October 22 So if we were reading this passage on that date, we would have seen what was happening in heaven.

And the agent of days was, what was he doing before that?

His garment was white as snow and the hair of his head was pure wool.

They had moved a burning fire, a fiery stream issued and came forth from before him.

They were closed before I was watching in the night vision and behold 1 like the son of man coming with the clouds of heaven and he came to the ancient of days and they brought him near before him And so right here we're seeing the judgment seat now coming into activity.

Question 3, who will be brought into the judgment?

For we must, how many, all appear before the judgment seat of Christ.
